It was my birthday! My brother in law took me out to dinner. We roamed the streets of SLO, reading menus outside the restaurants. Trying to decide what sounded best! I decided on Big Sky. Excellent choice! I started with a house salad with house made buttermilk bleu cheese dressing & he had split pea soup. Both were excellent. I ordered for my meal, Paella with a Sweet Pea Saffron Risotto base. Delicious. My BIL had Lobster Mac & Cheese! WOW! Mine was great but  his was better!!!!!!! The cheese sauce was incredible! Wine was really good, especially the house red.  I got a free dessert because it was my birthday. A really rich chocolate brownie... yum. It had fresh whipped cream on it! We had ordered the meyers lemon tart to share but ate the free brownie since it had fresh whipped cream. Still haven't tried the tart yet!

The tart was wonderful! Can't wait to go back again! I'm getting the lobster mac & cheese next time!

Going in, keep in mind that this place is a bit pricey. A friend took me, and I wasn't expecting the prices I saw.

That being said, it's worth it. I had A Really Good Turkey Burger (not just a clever name, it told the truth!) and a bowl of turkey chili, the chili being a recommendation of the waiter. I highly suggest both.

I saw their chicken Caesar salad, and it made me hungry all over again. If someone tries it, let me know.

How does this place not have a higher rating!?

I love how the front of the restaurant is wide open. It's nice to feel the breeze and to be able to look outside.

The service was incredible.  Our waitress was so friendly and our lunch came out very quickly.  And the food was delicious!

I got the VEGETARIAN VIETNAMESE BáNH Mì SANDWICH, which was so tasty and the sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had. They had a crunchy outside with a perfect tender inside. I love how they sprinkled a few thinly sliced orange peels on top. Very nice combination.

It's too bad I don't live in the area, I'd come here all the time!

I love Big Sky Cafe!!!  Every time I go to San Luis Obispo I have to stop here!

Fabulous ambience!  Great staff who are friendly and I always feel cool and relaxed there!  Lots of natural light and always cool music playing!

The food has always been great and I have been going here for years.  Great for any meal throughout the day!  I have been here with my parents where we had an elegant and classy meal and I also stopped here with my college friends when we took a spring break road trip.  We ordered wine and beer and had a super fun night!

Just the corn bread they serve on the table before the meal is worth it!  My favorite dish is the Ceasar salad- has sun dried tomatoes, kalamata olives and a delicious dressing!  I also try and get the specials- usually some kind of wild fish yum!

And the fact that the ingredients are local and organic makes me love Big Sky even more!  Highly recommend!

Lot of hype... I am having a very difficult time with this place....
I get it locally sourced fresh ingredients with really fancy names ...brush up on your geography before you go... Cuzz your gonna need it to make heads or tails of this menu!  Ultimately you may feel good thinking that you have somehow supported local small acreage farmers who are artisans in the world of organic growing...but you probably haven't... And worse than that it really didn't taste that great either....once the place has to rely on taste to stay open will see ... My guess is eat there now because come next summer it will be history lesson rather than geography for the Big Sky Cafe!!!!!

Bigggg fan of the pancakes and coffee.... great way to start out the morning..... have fresh and organic ingredients!

Pancakes come plain or can be stuff with fruit!

Very local and fresh ingredients.... they buy lots of their produce from farmer's in the area! Gotta get a bite to eat here!

Uneven but generally interesting food in a comfortable, pleasant, ever evolving environment.

Menu failures tend to be conceptual rather than kitchen related- in remixing assorted world cuisines the urge to be creative occasionally outstrips the necessities of appealing to the customer palate.  Disappointment can be avoided by applying this general rule:  if it doesn't sound like it should work, it probably doesn't.
(the exception being the Swiss Cheese Pancakes on the breakfast menu, which sound questionable but taste divine).

It also fills a interesting niche as the cheapest 'good' restaurant downtown, providing a certain level of  culinary aspiration at a reasonable price. Better fare will cost you substantially more, while establishments with similar price points generally under-deliver on the table.

A bit more discretion determining 'menu ready' dishes would be welcome but the overall experience is enjoyable.

As we grow older things change and some places need to ....

I love local and I love organic and ever changing menus.  But it appears that Big Sky is pretty gstuck these days.  I was disappointed that I couldn't get a great breakfast item during the week, it was all the standard breakfast fare.  Out of towners have to go on the weekend to get crab cake benedict; bummer.  I tried to create a dish that was satisfying by adding a side of the fennell/asiago sausage to two poached eggs, with rosemary potatoes.  But still it was lacking in the right combonation; like perhaps polenta cakes with the poached eggs.  The ginger coffee cake was dry, so I was disappointed in that, because I was assured it was great.

So while I was disappointed with Breakfast and service at that time; we went back for dinner.

We enjoyed the chickpea and spinach fritters, smoked goat cheese and argula appetizers.  We had coffee and a new Pilsner we hadn't tried.  At that time we were too full for an entree so we went for the blood orange and almond pan cotta to share.  That was a FABULOUS dessert, not always on the menu.  You could toss some blood orange on your breakfast menu perhaps and bring back the passion?  Just an idea.

Anyway, I realized on this last adventure to Big Sky that my tastes are evolving and I have to venture into other restaurants on our next visit to SLO.

I haven't been disappointed with anything! I love the food and friendly servers. Delicious cuisine. The atmosphere is light, open, airy and full of natural light. The prices are fair, but don't expect fast seating for brunch on Sunday, it's worth the wait for a reason! And, oh, the beignets....ooooh the beignets. Don't leave this place without getting them! Very vegan and vege friendly with things like wild salmon, grass fed beef and open range chicken for you animal eaters. You will be seated with their famous jalapeno cornbread mini-muffins and honey butter, and you too will fall in love!

Service can lag and more than once I've had to remind a waiter or waitress that I'm waiting. I have always had the impression they hire like-minded individuals and sometimes sacrifice experience or ability (waiting tables is not easy) for this quality. Btu like I said, they are all seemingly happy and friendly people. I've been dining here since 1999 (WAY before I was vegetarian) and I have loved it every time. I used to love the turkey chili and gumbo ya-ya, now I totally DIG the veggie platter and the fresh spring rolls. The vegetarian chili option is a go-to on a cooler day, and like i said, do NOT leave big sky without a beignet, forgo your diet for the chocolate ones!

Tried their big bowl noodle.  The veggies was fresh but the soup was horribly bland.  The miso was very watered down and had no taste to it.  The noodle was overcooked.  Not sure what asian fusion style they were trying to do with this dish, but so many things went wrong with this dish that I had to give up.  I tried my wife's dish, the glazed salmon.  Again the ingredients were very fresh, but the taste wasn't that great.  With all the hype, we were truly disappointed.  I will not come back again.

Big Sky is good. Not great, but good. Their food is usually always fresh, the wait staff nice and on top of things. Only thing that turned me off was the one time I saw the owner standing in her bare feet on top of the bar, changing a light bulb. I mean, really? Who wants your nasty ass feet where my food or drink goes?? then she wiped the counter down afterwards with the same rag that other wait staff were wiping tables with. It really just turned me off.

    What happened?

This place used to be good. Did they fire the cook and hire kindergarteners? I've been here many, many times over the last 7 years and this last time was the LAST TIME. I ordered off the "specials" menu and there was nothing special about it. The approach was: Hey, I know this tastes like dog shit, so I'm going to pour a bunch of salt on it and hope you don't notice.

Came here for lunch to today sort of on a whim. Alex A. and I stayed the night in SLO on our way to San Francisco and we just decided to eat somewhere local for lunch. The overall ambiance of the Big Sky seems very down-to-earth - nothing pretentious. The architecture of the restaurant is reminiscent of the general tiled-roof style in SLO.

The food is comparable to fancy, upscale restaurants in big cities. Alex and I shared a meal - we got the red lentil soup of the day and the NY sirloin panini with a salad of the day. The panini was fantastic. It was just enough flavor and the sirloin was cooked perfectly. The lentil soup was also very tasty. It tasted homemade and fresh. The prices were very affordable for what it was, too - the soup was about $6 and the panini and salad were about $11.

I'd definitely recommend checking out Big Sky if you're in the area and looking for some good local food and wanting to support local businesses.

Fun, artsy place to go for healthy food. The menu has a lot of variety, soups are delicious and I remember loving the chocolate filled beignets as a child. I especially love the veggie/vegan options. Not life changing food but still delicious and a better choice from all the restaurants in the area. The service has been great every time!

Food isn't that great. Food should be good first and natural/sustainable second.

All I hear from the staff and the menu is the latter, not the former. Way to pretentious for me. But if you into that kind of thing then this would be your place.

Very frequently crowded so get there early, and scope the menu first to make sure there is something on there that you would actually want to eat.

I will say that the ambience is nice and the staff are friendly.

Awesome. Came here Easter Sunday for breakfast. Coffee, corn muffins and coffee cake marvelous. Omelette w apples, bacon and blue cheese delightful. I wanted more traditional breakfast, but this place was so damned good. It was like every item had a unique taste and care put into each meal. Girlfriend had the fruit bowl w yogurt and hated it because yogurt was runny. $10.25 for the omelette dish

Year after year Big Sky proves to be a great place to grab a bite or enjoy an informal meal with friends.

Obviously, there is quite a bit of thought put into the cuisine that is served at Big Sky.  I like the ethos of this establishment- to provided diners with regional and sustainable food.  The menu is a genuine reflection of this, with locally grown and sourced food options in the best sense- from the field greens to the fish.   From the wines to the bread pudding.

We usually dine here for lunch or early dinner.  Portions are generous.  There are healthy as well as indulgent choices and damn.... some really great desserts if you are throwing caution to the wind.  Our top picks:

    Noodle Bowl
    Turkey burger
    Grilled Veggie sandwich
    Line-caught whatever
    Coffee
    Rice pudding
    Hanger steak

Stopped at the Big Sky Cafe while visiting my daughter in SLO. We stopped in around noon. Although busy they got us seated, with a smile, within five minutes.

The restaurant has this open feel to it yet we could carry on a conversation with ull tables all around us. I will say for a busy place it is spotless. Even the bathroom was cleaner than I expected.

The food was good and warm and the servings were quite ample in size without leaving me overly full and in "Food coma".

I had a sirloin panini and the meat was cooked to my liking but the flavor was a bit bland. I am a traditionalist who believes a good steak shouldn't need any condiments (thanks dad). So I knocked points off for that. The sweet potato fries were outstanding and needed nothing to spice them up!

My family seemed to like their meals, including my nine year old.

The staff was very freindly and the pricing was reasonable.

Add the patio seating with the SLO attitude and it was a pretty good place to eat.

Seriously? ONLY 281 reviews of this place? I've read each and every one of the 281 reviews and realized something was missing. Me. That's right, I want to add my two cents to the 562 cents already in the pot. That's right, I tossed in a math metaphor. Ha squared.

My sister cashed in the "birthday dinner" gift I gave her to eat here, along with my Mother (her Mom too) and my nieces, (her daughters). So there we were on a Saturday night. Ah the night life in SLO. Vibrant! Frenetic! "Ew, crowded." exclaimed my nieces. They don't get out much. They rarely try new things. So what happened?

Took awhile to get a table, 20 minutes or so, and the waitress was a bit slow on getting us drinks and those amazing little corn muffin type dealies that were wonderfully tasty. Sis had a Pomagranate Sangria as well as a Mango Margarita. Both delish. Girls, both nearly 18, had wine. Ha! I kid. Root beer or some such, then went to work questioning everything on the menu: "What does braised mean? What does eggplant taste like? Would they remove it from the lasagna if I asked them? Can I PLEASE have a sip of your Sangria, Mom!?"

They both decided on the Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, deeming it rich and tasty, and for 18.50, it had better be! One got the soup, potato bisque (what's bisque?) and the other a side salad with Chipotle Ranch Dressing. (Do you guys have REGULAR Ranch Dressing?) Results on those two items were, you guessed it, poor. Grandma ended up finishing those two dishes. Speaking of which, Grandma got the Eggplant Lasagna, which was good but, "Honey, eggplant tastes like whatever it's mixed with, I don't think you'd like it." she explained to her granddaughter.

Sis got the Braised Pork with Many Other Things One Of Which Looked Like Tofu But Wasn't. She liked it well enough, except for the tofu looking thingies. Pork was tender and rice/risotto/orzo was good, though what it was exactly she didn't know. I got the catfish with the Crispy Sushi Rice Balls which were really really really good. They made them a side dish or so I hear. Good decision. The catfish was plentiful and sat atop about 3,000 florets of broccoli.

Overall, good food, good atmosphere, average waitstaff. I'd been here before and can recommend the Banh Mi but not the Pozole. It'd be fun to work my way through their entire menu. Maybe with someone who doesn't have to ask so many questions, though. No offense girls.

SLO dining has Santa Maria's restaurant scene beat in spades. So you're gonna pay for it, but for a nice treat it's worth it. My birthday is coming up, by the way. So, you know. Do the math.

This place was so great!  I loved the atmosphere and the hippie vibe of the restaurant.  They have a great daily menu that changes (I went two times in three days) and tasted better than I expected.

The first time I went for dinner, where I had the bean burger, vegan, with sweet potato fries.  The sweet potato fries were hands down the best I have had.  They were hot, soft and still slightly sweet.  They topped it with an herb of sorts, and some lemon peel that I wasn't a fan of.  The burger was ok, a tad dry, but nothing a few extra slices of tomato couldn't help.  The flavor was more dominant when you ate the burger without the bun, but was overall extremely satisfying.

The second time I went was for brunch, when I decided to have their daily daily soup, Moroccan Pumpkin and Parship.  I asked ahead of time if it contained dairy/meat and assured by the waiter it didn't, it was a great vegan meal.  I had it with a roll and a side salad that was topped with beets and candied pecans.  It was just the right size meal, but could have used some protein to keep the eater a bit more satiated.

Overall, I loved the restaurant.  The service was prompt and friendly and I wish I had gotten one of their desserts!

I've eaten at Big Sky a few times, including tonight. I'll echo Kandice D. on this - the food, ambience and servers are terrific - good place, good people - really a great place to go. Regarding the food, everything I've ordered there was cooked right, seasoned right and presented right - there's a decent level of creativity in the selections and all of it is functional - nothing that's all show and no go. Really exactly what a nice neighborhood restaurant should be. Hats off to the owner, chef and staff. See you soon.

I went with high expectations because this place was highly recommended by a friend. Don't think it lived up to them but was a good dinner nonetheless.

Our service was pretty poor: Our waitress was slow, forgetful and inattentive. Honestly, she seemed stoned.

Food was tasty: I had the brown sugar brined pork roast (not something I would normally order, but it sounded good). My gramps had the NY steak, which I tried, and it was really good. My grams had a salad topped with sirloin but didn't like it - the steak was served cold in long flat strips, which we both thought was weird.

I like that the food is organic and locally grown. Lots of unique flavors and combinations. I'd go back to try out the breakfast, but I'm not in SLO much so I'd probably check out a different joint if I was.

First off, the jalapeno cornbread muffins that come out instead of bread are awesome.  As for main entrees, there is a good selection of hearty and healthy salads, as well as some dishes consisting of great slow cooked meat and potatoes. This place does a good job of mixing home cooking with fresh/local ingredients.

230p on Saturday. Place was nearly empty, yay! Took a booth, sat down to excellent service from a charming F waiter. Inquired as to wine list, delighted to see Bonaccorsi Pinot Noir on the menu (misspelled "Banaccorsi", so had to ask). Ordered the Pumpkin Bisque (wow! flavor popped) and Thai Shrimp Salad. Excellent meal.  So full, but couldn't resist looking at the dessert menu.  Our party ordered Lemon Mascarpone Tart with Lavender Blueberries on a Pine Nut Graham Crust and it was OFF THE CHARTS!  The Beignet assortment was astounding.  One of my new favorite restaurants in SLO.

Nice atmosphere, and this place is always busy. The prices are a bit high though, especially in a college town. I think a good portion of the price, in fact, is for the fact that you can bring a date here. Personally, I think if your date is super concerned about the atmosphere of your eatery as opposed to the food, they might not be marriage material. (But no one cares about that now, right?)

Their food always sounds vaguely hippie and interesting, but is a bit underwhelming. The chicken pesto scramble was really good at first, but provided pretty significant diminishing returns - something just didn't click. Service is thoroughly meh - busy, harried, not too personal.

Maybe I'm judging too harshly, but I feel like if Big Sky Cafe were to be in a more urban area such as Berkeley or SF, it would be eaten alive. I know that applies to 90% of restaurants, but I'm making this comparison here because Big Sky Cafe reminds me more of a restaurant that you'd find in an urban city rather than in SLO. It's a reliable choice, but nothing standout, and you can find better food for cheaper prices easily.

We go to SLO every year for our wedding anniversary. This is the second year in a row we went to Big Sky Cafe. We liked it so much last year we said we had to come back this year. We liked it as much this year as last. We came last year because Rachel Ray suggested it! She was right! The ambiance was great, the food was fantastic and the service was very good as well. Big Sky is not a cookie cutter restaurant! This is a well thought out no strings attached privately owned restaurant.

We will be back next year for number 3 in a row!

Most of my generosity toward this three star rating is going to the nice host (he dealt with a disgruntled guest before us, but then immediately sat my party), the sugar packets on the table (they're those thin, tall, tube-y ones...CLASSY!), and the ambiance (tall ceilings, skylights, spacious dining area and coat-hooks).

*sigh* This place sure had potential.

Food was lackluster. I ordered an omelette with pork and tomatillo salsa and perhaps jumped the gun in thinking this south-of-the-border egg dish would have shredded pork and not pork cubes and a mound of chunky or saucy salsa instead of a drizzle of pesto-looking, tasteless "salsa". Even local SF chains Squat and Gobble and Crepevine do omelettes better than this "Fresh Market Cuisine" establishment.

We also ordered the beignet sampler, which were tough, geometric pieces of dough; some stuffed, ALL bland. I've never been to France or New Orleans, but even I know the difference between a beignet and fried cardboard.

If I happen to be in SLO again (Mid State Fair 2012, anyone?) I may give this place another shot. Anyone have any suggestions for other brunch places in that 'hood?

Stopped in to have lunch on 6/30 and was served fish tacos. As soon as I picked up one of the tacos, a Small Cockroach ran out from underneath the taco. I smacked it with a soup spoon while it was still on the plate and showed waitress Rena who immediately cleared the dish. She returned to ask me what I would like instead and also took the opportunity to let me know that the owner said it was just a "gnat that had been flying around".

I guarantee it was no gnat.

After waiting just over 20 minutes, the owner finally came to drop off my replacement entree. By then my guest had already finished her entree.

I was very surprised that the owner didn't seem to care or even offer a sincere apology.

When I received the bill I was very surprised to find no sign of appreciation for my patriotism, patience, or tolerance of poor business practices.

I am very embarrassed for the customer service industry who has establishments like this one giving it a bad name.

The food is always great. Very fresh. My wife says the coffee is outstanding and she's quite the critic of coffee.  I've been here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and each meal time has awesome choices.

The service can be here and there and that's what keeps it from getting 5 stars. Service shouldn't be random and that's a management issue.

You'll have to wait almost anytime you go there due to its popularity.

The meals they offer are just so unique and good tasting that I can put up with the off and on service (for the record, we had great service the weekend after Thanksgiving.) SLO has changed a lot since I moved out of town but I'm glad Big Sky is there with consistently good tasting meals.

Had dinner there tonight. Wait staff was on the ball even with most of the tables full.

We each had lamb shanks with zucchini latkes. They were wonderful. Lamb was spicy and fell right off the bone.  We left absolutely nothing on the plates.

Be sure to try the fresh baked jalapeno corn muffins. I'm usually not a corn muffin fan but these were moist and just a bit sweet.

Adore this place for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Turkey Joe scramble is amazing in the morning and I can't get enough of the chicken sandwich they have in the afternoon/evening on the ciabatta bread.

    Their little cornbreads are perfect.

The service can leave something to be desired but I usually just chalk it up to the place being so busy and perhaps a tad understaffed.  But the waitresses are kind so that earns them points.
