Hipster meets Haute-Savoie at Big Fernand, where the succulent homemade burgers are as much the attraction as the béret, checkered-shit and moustachioed get-up of the guys behind the counter.

The restaurant is minimal to say the least -- just a long counter where you place your order and some dirty tables in the back where to go to scarf down the paper-wrapped burgers.

On the afternoon I went there was a line out the door and by the time I got to the counter they had run out of beef, so we ordered the veal burgers instead. I chose the Victor, a veal patty smothered in melted blue cheese, caramelized onions, fresh coriander and some kind of sweet house sauce. Overall, the taste was explosive, but a bit too much for me. I would have preferred much less sauce and more burger. While the meat was juicy and tender, it got lost behind everything else, including the yummy brioche bun. The fries were tasty as well, but super greasy and not as crisp as I'd like.

While we realized we were having a major meal with each heavy bite, what I never expected was that my burger and fries for lunch would eradicate all hunger for close to 12 hours. No exaggeration! I actually skipped dinner but woke up at 2am famished.

If I go back for a second (which I plan to) try I'll skip the proposed composed burgers and just order a beef+cheese, without any fries, so that my stomach doesn't go on strike again afterwards.
