Review from David L.
I happened to be one of the few people in the Lower Mainland to try out Big City Cupcakes before they opened their doors in Point Grey. The people at Big City Cupcakes came to my workplace and delivered a tray of samples of their product. It was a big tray with over a dozen cupcakes. I must be honest when I first tried their cupcakes, I wasn't a fan at all. The inside felt hard, the icing was way too sweet, and it didn't taste too fresh. Too bad, because they didn't make a good impression. I ended up throwing out all of their icing in the garbage because it taste hard, artificial, and way too sweet.
Two years later and to be exact, about one and a half months ago my coworker purchased half a dozen cupcakes for us at work from Big City Cupcakes at Point Grey. I tried their truffle cupcake. I was expecting a disappointment, but it looks like their product has been greatly improved. It tasted very fresh - very soft, not too overly sweet. It had a luxurious chocolate truffle taste to it. Do note that the truffle cupcake has no icing which is a plus. This is the best cupcake I've ever had so far. It looks like they improved their product. It didn't taste like high school home economics baking disaster.
Lastly, I still don't understand why they put a massive blob of icing on almost all of their cupcakes. If they're going to put so much icing, it ought to be good, or else. You know what I mean. -

This would explain why this company never seem to actually produce any cupcakes...

Review from Reena M.
I'm not sure why this new business is getting such a bad rep. I went there today to check out what the fuss was all about and here's what I found:
Pros:
-Moist Cupcake
-Boast use of wholesome ingredients
-Unique/innovative cupcake ideas (truffle, cheesecake inside a cupcake,
-Traditional cupcake/frosting combinations
-Have just the right amount of frosting on top
-They make egg/dairy/gluten free cupcakes in a separate area of the factory for sensitive people on weekends.
Cons:
-Frosting really sweet... too sweet, I had the chocolate covered strawberry cupcake, but it was really strawberry frosting covering chocolate. And the strawberry is definitely synthetic flavouring, but what can you do?
-Pricey..? $3.10 for a regular cupcake, $1.50 for mini
-Super Secretive with ingredients list--Where are the brochures/pamphlets/product nutritional info?
-They're made in a central processing plant in Burnaby and trucked in. But is that really a con if they're just trying to minimize costs? I wonder how much energy expenditure they would have if each store had an active oven vs. what is spent in the cupcake factory in Burnaby? Just food for thought.
-Need more selection of mini cupcakes
So all in all, I actually think this product is somewhat better than "Cupcakes" because of the moist cake. However, it's not the best cupcake I've had in Vancouver. And for that, it gets 4 stars. I would probably go back to them if in the area and need cupcakes. And if they had the mini cupcake. -
Review from Emma G.
My friend and I made it over here this weekend, on a mission to try as many cupcakes in Vancouver as we could get our hands on!
The store itself is kind of plain looking. The logo is cute but inside it's just sort of...meh. The layout is weird, with the two seperate display cases.
The lady working there was absolutely lovely. Friendly, helpful, and overall seemed to like her job a lot.
The cupcake flavours were pretty typical, at least for the regular ones. We ordered a Strawberry Shortcake, which is vanilla with strawberry icing.
The cupcakes themselves look okay. Not super cute, and the icing is sort of odd - it's really high up, but it's all in the middle, rather than sort of all over the top, if that makes sense?
The cake was fairly moist and although it tasted a bit cake mix-y, it was good. The frosting is incredibly sweet and tastes like fake strawberries as opposed to fresh ones; sort of like those strawberry marshmallow candies you buy at the corner store. Like the other reviewer said, it tastes synthetic, although I disagree with the "what can you do" part - you can use real strawberries! More expensive, yes, but so much better. Still, it wasn't too bad. The cake has a nice texture to it.
I have to say, though, reading the other review, I'm a little bit put off by the fact they bake in Burnaby and truck them in. I'm not sure why, it just does. Also they said they only have mini cupcakes on orders, which is a bit of a letdown as I wanted to try one. But it's understandable! It'd be nice if they had little tables outside or something.
The price was $3.10 for one cupcake, which I don't think is too pricy; that seems to be the going rate for cupcakes these days.Listed in: Cupcakin'
