My work is right near Big City Cupcakes. I've worked there 6 weeks and finally gave into the temptation for the first time yesterday.
The girl in the shop was very chatty and helpful, and gave me a spiel about the cupcakes (ingredients, that they're made in Burnaby, those left at the end of the day are donated to charity, etc) and recommended the truffle cupcake.
I agree with other reviewers that about $4.50 is too much for a cupcake. I also agree that the cake itself was a bit dry. It wasn't excessively so, but it definitely was not moist like a good cupcake should be. There was plenty of ganache in the filling, and this was quite tasty, as was the topping. The cake itself had a good flavour, but because it wasn't very moist, it didn't come out so much.
I'd probably go here again if I was desperate for something sweet, but it wouldn't be my first choice - I'd rather make my own. -

This would explain why this company never seem to actually produce any cupcakes...

* It took a while *
It took a while, but back when I FTRed this spot and said, "I hope they get their act together otherwise they will become the company formerly known as the fastest growing cupcake company in Canada!" I guess it was telling. They are closed. Took a while!Listed in: Dentists' Dreams in Vancouver

Big City Cupcakes seemingly went out of Business - at least for their own outlets, particulary this one on Howe St.
The store is closed and the space for lease.
Cheers

Review from Gina I.
I've baked better cupcakes from a box. In my kitchen. And the box was $2.
The icing was too freaking sweet and topped way too much. The crumb was okay. But really, I just don't get it. I'd rather eat box cupcakes and prepared icing before I shell over more money for a 'cupcake'. -

I think what disappoints me the most about this cupcake shop is that it's clear the cakes aren't as fresh as they could be, as they definitely aren't baked in-store. What also alarmed me was the sheer volumes of cupcakes they had out on display. Surely they wouldn't be able to go through the whole stock in one day, and cupcakes should not be sold when they're days old unless they're discounted and called "day olds" you know?
I get that cupcakes are the big trend, or were the big trend, but there really is something to be said for fresh, well-made, and simple cupcakes. Trade the variety of flavours in for quality and freshness, and maybe I'd go back. -

WORDS AS SUNG BY THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY SONG......
"I THINK I LOVE YOU"
Ohhhhhhhhhh..............
I think I love you
but what am I so afraid of
Just a calorie & carb-laden cupcake
Driving my blood sugar through the roof
(so what if it doesn't rhyme)
Can't make my mind up
between chocolate mounds & lemon drop
I honestly can say.................
I never felt this way.
Believe me it's the only thing that makes me happy
But if the store closed & you wanted me to go away, I would
But even better still
I'll return to try the other 10 flavours
To update my review on yelp
You've brought new meaning to my life
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you

I went back yesterday and checked them out yet again. They had two new flavours - Vanilla Toffee and Chocolate Toffee. Curious and hungry, I tested both out.
Both were surprisingly good. Locals will definitely find this too sweet. As for myself, I have a sweet tooth. I'll down a spoonful of honey. This cupcake is perfect...well, for sharing because once you're done eating half then your sugar craving for the day has been fulfilled.
As for being moist, it's still not up to par with the good ones. It's not dry. It's just not moist.
So if they can take the time to tweak their recipe, then I'll keep on trying 'em out and giving higher stars.
Although, they do have to work on their pricing. It's too expensive. I can't blame them for taking advantage of Vancouver. But why follow the rest when you can set a trend and put a stop to hyped up pricing.
I'll be watching...and rating.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

The bad:
What a disappointment. This barley satisfied my cupcake fix. The cupcakes here are not fresh. The icing was hardened. The cake was dry. I've seen these cupcakes being delivered because they aren't baked in store. For such a big store, they have no tables or chairs. They don't even have much standing room and the space behind the counters is only occupied with cardboard boxes. It's a terrible layout.
The good:
This place is easy to find because of the huge window decals. Half of their cupcakes have a filling, though the filling is less than what could fit in a thimble. The cheesecake cupcakes were alright. I had the cupcake of the month, which had a caramel buttercream frosting and caramel filling. It was alright too, but it was far too expensive for a less than decent cupcake.

One of my girlfriends brought me two of these little beauties on my birthday. I love, love, love cupcakes and bake them at home all the time. I have never actually been in the store, so I can't comment on customer service, so I will talk about the cupcakes themselves.
First, the Red Carpet. I assumed red velvet, but it was even lighter. I later learned that it was a vanilla cupcake with a dash of chocolate - a nice twist on the typical red velvet. The cream cheese frosting was the perfect consistency. Overall, yum yum!
New York Chocolate Cheesecake. Interesting creation, and I loved it! The cream cheese frosting seemed different than the red velvet, almost richer. Still, very delicious.
Both of my cupcakes were fresh, light, and moist, and the icing was just right - sweet, and not at all stale or hard. -

Hmm... over $4 for a cupcake is definitely quite pricey. If I wasn't walking around Downtown with my friend, I don't think I would've ever dropped myself into this crazy cupcake joint. Their cupcakes definitely tasted good, but I don't think it was good enough to be over $4 each. I was so uber shocked when the cashier said my total was $8 something. :0
My friend tried their New York Chocolate Cheesecake and I had their Strawberry Cheesecake cupcake. I thought mine was nothing special? It was a cupcake with lots of sugar, and a cheesecake (very very small spec of cheesecake).
I won't be coming back - that's for sure. I don't see how a cupcake could ever cost me that much money! -

I was on my way home. When I saw the giant window displaying the name 'Big City Cupcakes.'
I didn't want to go in but I had to.
When you walk in, you realize just how big a space they have but just how empty it is. It has a modern feel to it but it truly seems unfinished in terms of the branding.
If you are familiar with 'Cupcakes' on Denman, the ideas here are somewhat similar with the exception of their filled cupcakes. For example some of them are filled with a chocolate ganache.
Having this today was not part of my plan but why not? I tried two mini cupcakes at $1.50. They claim its made fresh but I would have to disagree based on how dry and tough the cake and icing itself was.
I have to concur with the previous reviews on this place. If I have to choose between the two big cupcake giants, 'Cupcakes' wins.
To be honest, the best ones are homemade. Have yet to have one better than those. -

2.5 stars.
This place is pricey! All their filled cupcakes, specials, and the red velvet are considered 'premium' cupcakes, meaning they command a steep price of $4 each! Regular ones are $3 each.
Although I love Vancouver's food generally, we are seriously lacking in good cupcake shops! I so miss Sprinkles in Beverly Hills (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) - mmmm anyone want to send me some?
Had the red velvet and the caramel truffle filled versions. No issues with dryness. Red velvet was so-so and relied too much on a too thick cream cheese icing to balance out the bland base. The caramel chocolate one was a bit better but also not well balanced in terms of icing to filling to cake.
Lots of selection and the service was friendly but definitely not worth a 'big city' price at $4 each! -

First of all great red velvet cakes! However, are they still open? Went by the Kitts location Sunday and it was no more. Last night we're at Metrotown and the tea place that used to sell them no longer carries them. What's the haps???

It's tough to beat...... when the big city cupcake on WEST 4th was SOOOO mind blowing.... I think it ishard to put together a filled mini cupcake and I think they were surprised themselved to have received a delivery..... the icing was a little overbearing especially when the cupcake is so small. The fillling wasn't very noticable and it was just a little too heavy for my liking. I would probably stay away from the chocolate ones if you want something lighter.... maybe it was just an unlucky choice today.
Will have to try again to prove myself wrong.... the regular size truffle cupcake, was awesome (my friend told me so) -

Nice spot, cupcakes are good, but not the best. The price is slightly high, but it is downtown of a major city and simple business economics justifies this.

Yes, these are pretty pricey but so worth it! These were one of the best cupcakes I've ever had! I love that they had so many different flavors. My favorite was the Strawberry Cheesecake. It was so moist and the frosting was delicious! Ugh! I wish we had one here. I would happily eat and gain the extra pounds for one more bite. My mouth is watering already!

i am so shocked at these reviews! now granted, i have not been to the other big city cupcakes locations, but i thought that these cupcakes were pretty good! red velvet is my standard order, and after seeing that they call it the "red carpet cupcake" here, i was sold. my girls tried the "celebration cupcake" and the "strawberry cheesecake." i tasted both of theirs and liked all three. the star was the strawberry cheesecake, but i didn't find any of them dry. hmmm, maybe i went on a good day?

cupcake shops shouldn't include metal tables for their stands, but aside from that and the fact that the cupcakes aren't made on site, i really enjoy their products!
the cheesecake delights are my absolute favorites! if a giant blop of cream cheese frosting isn't enough to get you excited, wait till you find the hunk of cheesecake cleverly placed in the centre. i'm definitely someone who likes to separate the bottom of the cupcake from the top and eat it first, and this way i got a treat in both halves! try the strawberry cheesecake cupcake in the summer too! there are strawberry pieces not only in the frosting, but also in the cupcake batter!!
while the truffle cupcake initially struck my eye, i have to say that the ganache in the centre but as the fronsting, it wasn't as fabulous as i had hoped it to be.
i think my favorite part about this company is that they sell their products at a cafe in Kelowna called 'The Wedding Cafe'. If you're in K-town, definitely check it out if you're planning on a do-it-yourself wedding!! Somehow cupcakes make seating arrangements seem a little more pleasant to do!
