I wandered into this Thrift shop when I was down in the area for an arts event which blocked off 151 to 156 Streets for a street film fest last night. A few of the shops stayed open and served hot coffee and cookies, and Bfm probably got more traffic than it has in a while.
This area is still a pretty dead part of the city, but it's slowly but surely being revitalized. There's a new, cool club along the strip - Haven Social Club - and Revolution Cycle, but the others are smaller moms & pops, like this shop. Bfm is full of all the recycled gems you'd expect from a Thrifty mart. Other people's old, recycled dish ware, racks upon racks of clothing, place mats, blankets, footwear, books, kitsch and more. I especially had fun browsing through the large collection of records, and I don't even have a turn table.
There was a lot of stuff from the sixties, a good selection of classical and bands that recorded and faded into music history before I even owned my first record - which, BTW, was The Chipmunks. -

This thrift shop focuses mostly on clothing for people in need, and as a result is pretty picked over, but the careful shopper can, as always, find bargains; I saw a Hugo Boss suit for $4 the other day.
It's usually the little items I take home; a grey leather skinny tie for 50 cents, some unused, still-packaged 1950s buttons and sewing notions for a dime each, and knitting pattern books that are older than my parents. And for any Dutch speakers, they've for some reason got a large shelf of old literature in that language.
The old women staffing the BFM thrift shop tend to be very sweet; I once purchased a little box of religious cards and the woman at the till, very uncondescendingly, asked if I read the Bible. I don't, but am open-minded, and she promptly fetched me a really nice, boxed copy from the back and eagerly directed me to a good spot for a new-to-the-Bible reader to begin. I guess to some this sort of thing could be a turn-off but I appreciated her sincerity and the joy she obviously felt talking about her beliefs and sharing them with others.Listed in: Thrifting The City
