The only reason why we decided to go to this new place was because I bought a deal online for $10 for 3 burgers ($21 value).

When I got there I found out I could only redeem one burger per day.

All three of us ordered "The Burger". Sadly, all you could taste was the sauce and not the beef patty itself. I didn't taste seasoning or anything.

They had the new Coca Cola beverage dispenser with the touch screen. It was confusing for people who have never seen it or used it before.

As a fan of the 80s I enjoyed the decor and music but it didn't really go with the ambiance of a burger place.

I don't plan on going back but I might just because I have two more burgers to redeem.

4/28 back down to one star.  owner never replied once I upped rating and agreed to give them a 2nd chance.  No, "on the house," in reality.

3/31 Just gave them another star because the owner had a nice quick response to my review (below).  We've been invited back to try again, "on the house," and I'll re-review at that time.

    bleh
cold buns, cold mushrooms. tiny onion ring orders - mediocre all the way.  5 Guys kills them on fries and burgers in a counter order to counter order comparison of non-beer burger joints.

Of course Hodads, Harbor Town and Slater 50/50 all in Pt Loma beat them both.

I know you are thinking... 3 stars, that's not good. It is! Very decent cheeseburger. It's tall and barely fits in my mouth (that's what she said) . Generous portions of onions and tomatoes. Frys were average. Soda machine is neat but I have seen one of these at Pei Wei in DFW area.  80-90s era music videos playing. I enjoyed myself and would not mind eating there again if I'm in the area.

It's definitely on the trendy style.  Themed with 80s music and cover art on the walls.  I had the veggie burger, it kind of fell apart but I want to go back to try their other selections.

As a child of the 80's, I loved the decor and the music videos running on the tv's. As a human being, the burger was delicious (I had the Cuban), and the onion rings, though a tad greasy, we're super tasty.  I'll be back. And I'll bring friends.

I used to love this place when it was Daddios, but the new Burger Joint seems off. Boring burger, boring sweet potato fries, but good shakes. I was the only person in the place and the owner def seemed upset about that, he was kinda rude. Get a new attitude, change the buns on the burgs, and please add something to your sweet potato fries! Sea salt, wasabi, anything!

For a $10 burger and over a 15 minute wait, when you can hear crickets in the place, I better get an orgasmic burger. Yea I said it. It better be the bomb dot com.

The burger was decent; the service was pleasant; and the ambiance was super sweet (probably the overall star-rating savior).

Let's just say that there are better burgers out there for less money; however, this new lil' establishment has quite the potential and while I don't necessarily recommend you try this place tomorrow, I'll be checking this place out again sometime to give it another shot.

I love the atmosphere of this place.  Totally 80's rock, old MTv videos, cool record posters, etc.  The soda machine kicks ass too.  It's like a 1980's futuristic dream of what soda machines should be.

Now the food.  I was super stoked at first with all the burger options.  They have tons of great sounding burgers with awesome ingredients.  I saw one guy scarfing some grimace proportions of what must have been the Wellington, it looked rad.  Unfortunately I was looking for the veggie/pesca options, and even more unfortunate, I went for the lobster roll.

With all the good stuff going on at this place, (and my girlfriend enjoyed her house made veggie patty), I hate to say but the lobster roll was a total failure.  There was a fair amount of lobster meat, but it was tough and stringy.  But by far the worst part about it was the sauce.  It had a weird, thick, sweet mustard sauce all over it.  Way too much sauce, total weird flavor, and the thickness was almost like it had corn starch in it or something.  Avoid it at all cost.

If/when I try this place out again I'll update but just for the sake of anyone thinking of going outside the box, stick to the burgers and you should be good.

I'm trying not to let the fact that this restaurant is now in the location previously held by one of my favorite restaurants (Daddy O's) affect my rating of it...The food is very good, and the menu is creative, but the atmosphere just ain't what it used to be. Unfortunately I can't help but compare it to the previous owner, and I find it lacking. The staff was friendly however, but I thought it was a bit pricey for the overall experience.

But this place is worth trying! To start...I'm completely over the Burger Craze that seems to have taken over San Diego. They seem to be popping up everywhere. You can get a burger at every sandwich shop and every steakhouse as well. So honestly the food must speak for itself to survive!

I came to BGR on the recommendation of friends and needless to say I was sold...and I will be back again...and soon!

So many burger joints basically offer the same options in similar environments. But I was pleased upon entering! The decor and ambiance was playful and inviting. You could easily come here for a quick bite or make it a family experience.

The soda machine was incredible!!! So many choices! Very futuristic! I won't begin to explain it but definitely a fun experience.

I ordered the Tuna Burger and replaced the pineapple with lettuce and a thick cut tomato. I highly recommend this combination!!! The people at the table had to laugh as
I continued to say, "This is the best burger I've ever had." And I'm not one to make blanket strong statements! Which means it was actually that good! I can attest my fellow diners enjoyed their meal as well.

On another note - order a few extra sides of what they call "mojo sauce"- it was wonderful with everything we tried, including fries and onion rings!

    Enjoy!

Horrible service. It took 45 minutes after we got our food before they started to make our shakes and floats. We ended up asking for our money back on the drinks and got a half sincere sorry. It wasn't busy either. Another customer fumed out of the restaurant after waiting 30min for a side order of fries.

The food was so-so, half of the onion rings came out burnt and the burgers were under-flavored. I wouldn't expect that much out of a strip mall burger joint but our total bill for two was $35. Will not visit this place again.

Another gourmet burger joint in San Diego.

The Wellington - Flavor explosion is what it should be called. You get their premium, dry age beef a long with Roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, garlic with a touch of mustard seed and blue cheese for around $9. Expensive you say? Well, wait until you take a big bite. The combinations of the above ingredients is like an orchestra in your mouth. Very savory and juicy. The only downside is that it's a little bit too rich. They add a too much blue cheese in my opinion.

The Cuban - Another delicious burger. Bottom half is the burger and the top half is the cuban sandwich.

Fries - They are just ok.

    Service was fast and friendly.

I got the wellington burger with a housemade veggie patty ($9).  Grilled onions, mushrooms, blue cheese, mojo sauce.  It was great and big, I could only finish half.  Love that they make their own veggie patties - so much better than the frozen ones.  We also tried the onion rings (about $5, I think) and they were amazing.  10/10 on the awesome onion rings scale.

The real star of this place is the soda machine though.  It is (what I am calling) the greatest advance in technology of our time.  It is one machine (see my photo) with a touchscreen, and a ton of different soda options - seriously, you need to have taken at least trigonometry to figure out the equation that will tell you how many drink combos there are.  The Coke Zero option alone has lemon, lime, orange, grape, vanilla, dang it I already forgot the other ones, but trust me there are like four more at least!  And yes, Fanta ZERO fruit punch is on there!  And yes, it is amazing!

Even though I enjoyed my meal, I probably won't go here again because I live a few blocks from Hodad's and although BGR makes their own veggie patties, I just love the Hodad's veggie burger so much (which is also about $5 cheaper!).

Ok here's the deal. If you gonna hit paint with me at Rutger's, you better come hard. If you gonna jump right into the burger fray in 'Diego, you better come proper.

I'm talkin Nickey Rotten's/Smashburger/Stacked/Burger Lounge proper.

I'm sayin proper like The Counter up by Del Mar.

And proper don't even have to cost neither, just look at El Sol on University Ave., most underrated burger in San Dog.

BGR may be big time on the East, but  here in SD we don't play. You can have all the kitchy music videos, awards, and retro memoribilia you want, if the flava is mediocre, hit the bricks, son.

The best part of BGR is the soda machine. Burger flavors are weak, I had to drench mine in A1 to get any sort of taste. The buns overtake the meat. The lettuce is wilty and not even iceberg like it's s'posed to be. And where were the tomato and onions? Needed thick slices of beefsteak tomato and raw onion. It was drenched in sauce making the entire thing a wet, sloppy mess. Also, you can get the same fries at Red Robin.

    Work on the food guys.

I've been to a lot of burger places around San Diego and to be honest, BGR The Burger Joint is slightly average at best.

The place was decorated with Rock Album pictures (The Police, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, U2, Tom Petty, etc...), a pretty cool Coke Machine that you can customize your sodas, lights made out of PVC Pipe Fittings, and 2 - 36" LCD TV screens playing 80's MTV style videos. There was an overall feel of "I LOVE THE 80's" by just sitting down in this restaurant.

I came here to this restaurant looking for a good burger to eat. Here's my take: The Greek, which is ground lamb instead of beef was delicious. I ordered mine Medium Rare. I do feel that it lacked a little seasoning and had way too much lettuce in it (I took half of it off.) On a personal note: I can't believe this burger lost to Bobby Flay.

My brother ordered THE SOUTHWESTERN. From what the menu said, he was expecting HOT....I tried a little bite and wasn't impressed. Though it was seasoned/spicy, it lacked the hotness I've experienced with other burgers in the past.

I will say that I was impressed with the side order of Onion Rings. These were huge and cooked to perfection.

That being said, I'd like to give this place 3 1/2 stars but since I can't, the BGR The Burger Joint will only get 3 stars from me.

While on Vacation. I went here w my family, since they saw it after we went to wahoo's a few days before. I had the Wellington Hamburger and I have to say while it was ok, the hamburger gave me a stomach ache and 2 out of 3 kids really didn't care for it. The environment was awesome and so was the theme of the place, but I think next time I'll be trying something else on the menu.

Oh man, what a burger.  I stopped by with my sister and her husband yesterday and had the regular burger, fries and drink meal....I think they called it "The Box Set."

The burger was so tasty, and tender, and the fries were thick cut and crispy...exactly like I like them!  The soda machine was pretty cool too....you can make over a hundred different combinations of sodas...flavors to please everybody.

The atmosphere was good and the staff were excellent.  I highly recommend this place and will be going back for lunch or dinner very soon.

*DISCLAIMER...I am friends with the owners BUT I would just not write the review if I could not be honest and wanting to share goodness with Yelp Nation*

So there are tons of these gourmet Burger places popping up.  In fact, my review of Burger Lounge and Smashburger are to follow here soon...there are too many out there in my opinion.  Also most are just overpriced and not special.  Rocky's still RULES for this reviewer BUT BGR THe Burger Joint is where I will go for a novelty, good quality burger.  It is a really great product.  They offer quite a few different options.  My crew of peeps tried 6 different burgers.  Everyone was impressed but for the one naysayer...there is always a naysayer, right?

I had the Greek Burger.  It was good and juicy and tasty.  I think it is healthier than other options.  I have no idea but it tasted damned good.  It was a comfortable meal and bite into a reasonable burger that was not loaded with extras to mask the taste or lack of meat.  It was good.

What was great were the Onion Rings.  They are big and hot and good.  I tried the Sweet potato fries and was not a fan but I do not like that kind of stuff.

The shake got great reviews but for the straw not being ready to take down the shake.  We were told new BIG straws were on their way.  This was all that was missing from a great experience...a bigger straw.

It is a family friendly environment.  They want it to be a place to hear music and enjoy a nice good meal out.  These people running this place CARE about their products and how customers will embrace them.  If you have an issue I suggest you let them know because they will address it.  They want you to eave and tell people about the place and the difference it makes on things besides JUST the food product.

I believe they will be using Foursquare and other apps to be driving specials so tune in as you get close to it to see if there are ways to use your Webs to get your discounts etc.  Everyone likes something free and they want to recognize those coming through their place.

Plenty of parking too.  Next to Souplantation as a landmark.  Go enjoy!  Good luck to The Burger Joint

Went here with coworkers after hearing a lot of hype.  The decor was cool... they have the whole music, retro-futuristic vibe going on with music videos playing.  Overall impressed with the atmosphere.

We all know that decor alone is not why you go somewhere...  so let's talk about the food.  I purchased the veggie burger and overall I thought it was pretty good.  Compared to Burger Lounge's veggie burger, it was not as good, but still pretty decent.  I was very unimpressed with the fries though.  The fries looked like the fries you get at a high school cafeteria, no thanks ya'll!

My friends ordered beef-burgers and there was a collective "meh" about the quality compared to other (already established) SD joints.  If you are looking for a bomb burger, I would head to Smashburger, Burger Lounge or Nicky Rottens....  I would say they need to up there game to stay competitive here in SD where we have so many great choices....

Probably won't do again....  Just sayin'.

Well, this place is delicioso! I feel as if you're upset with the things that do not come on your burger, you should read the menu thoroughly and then ask the person at the register, you can't just expect everything to be handed to you, people. I've been there three times now and definitely plan to be back.

The Southwestern burger is a unique burger that's seasoned perfectly, although I'm a big fan of spicy (and it wasn't THAT spicy as advertised) it was still amazing. It's a heavy burger (about 9 oz.) so come hungry.

The veggie burger..PSSSSH so tasty. This is a hearty burger that packs a lot of flavor and the BBQ sauce is actually carmelized on the grill. Order it with "the works" and you won't be disappointed.

The turkey burger..wow I haven't had a better turkey burger. Being that it's infused with gorgonzola cheese and portabella mushrooms was a hit for me because the flavors blended so well together. Also, order with "the works", SO GOOD. If people were to complain about over-seasoning on this burger..it is not seasoned in house.

I have tasted the sweet potato and regular fries and you can't go wrong, perfectly seasoned and not greasy. Have yet to try the onion rings but my boyfriend said they were BOMB. ;)

I'll be just like everyone else and say the soda machine is siiiiiick.

Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. They were helpful right off the bat and made sure that I was informed on what I was ordering. You should go..just experience it once :)

"The Works"=lettuce, beef steak tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, and mojo sauce.

One complaint is that there is no ranch :( & no sports on the TV. Although they have such cool old-school music videos on always.

Get over your fear of pink in the middle! Try something new in the way you order it, you won't regret it! Go for medium.

After a bad experience that I rated on Yelp, I received an email from the owner explaining the situation and apologizing profusely.  His efforts went a long way in showing me that the night of my experience was not business as usual.  He didn't ask that I change my review, but did say he'd like to invite our party back so he can give us a better experience. I wouldn't normally change a review, but this joint has a lot going for it and I don't want to take anything away from it.  Sounds like they've got the staffing problems worked out and all food and drinks will be out on time.

I had the bacon cheese burger... Now this place knows about good meat, first the beef is prime beef cook to my preference, I prefer medium rare. Some places look at me like I'm nuts for eating ground meat that way, and refuse to cook it for me... But not here. secondly the bacon is quality cut and applewood smoked bacon. Added double cheese. I love a good burger... This is a great burger flame broiled not grilled. Regular burger starts at $6.99 you go up from there. For me it is never about price, but the quality of the product, I got both at BGR the Burger Joint

BGR comes highly regarded from my other Yelp friends, namely Dave M. and Alan B, so we decided to give this place a try!

I have decided that getting a burger on a Sunday morning as BGR first opens is a pretty clever idea. The place was EMPTY! The place is nicely decorated and we noticed that there was a guitar in a shadowbox signed by Dave Grohl. Pretty cool!  Walking to the counter, we were greeted by a friendly BGR employee. You know, having good customer service is literally half of the overall experience when you go out to eat. I'm sure you already know this. The menu was pretty extensive, but I decided not to panic order, like I normally do in these situations. I went head first for their "The Burger", plus swiss and the works. Krystle went in on the Mini Sliders, sauce on the side and ordered us their onion rings.

As I was beginning to walk over to the soda machine, I noticed this ridiculous Coca Cola machine that I've never seen before! You pretty much can have any Coke product that you want from this thing! Talk about choices!

Our order came up and presentation was outstanding. For some reason though, Krystle's mini sliders looked amazing compared to my burger. She complained that the bun was too big for the small patties. I argued that the bun that they use for the mini sliders were SO delicious, and I don't usually go for mini sliders. Having the sauce ordered on the side was a good call, because you can never tell how much sauce they smash on it. Their mayo was a little tart, and very very tasty!

My burger is what I expected. Monstrous! The beef was cooked to perfection, but I some how could not get into the bun. I loved all the fixings, and they were fresh. I think I'll pass on this next time.

Onion rings, to me, were bomb! Huge and you can not miss dipping these in their mayo. I got BBQ sauce too, but afterwards, I wasn't feeling that. They also have fried asparagus, and we want to try this next time instead!

They had music videos playing on their TVs, that actually ended up turning out really good because some of the songs were oldies, but goodies. One was a live performance by Paul McCartney and friends for "Something" which really made for a great eating experience.

Overall, I left pretty happy, full and a BGR fan. Location is probably great, because there are a lot of competing eats in the same shopping center. We left paying $22, for our order, plus one medium drink. Do NOT forget to ask for military discount, which is 10%. Will be back again for shizzle!

BGR The Burger Joint just opened this week in Point Loma. We gave them a few days to get their stuff together and then made a Friday night visit.

We each had the top of the menu burger, with cheese and all the things that go on a hamburger and split an order of fries and a couple of soft drinks.

The burger had a huge patty, nicely seasoned and cooked just the way I ordered it. I thought it was very good. The fries were equally good. Total with tax, twenty bucks and change.

The Burger Joint is located in a strip mall on West Point Loma Blvd at the intersection of Midway Drive.

The Wellington is the Grand Champion, topped with carmelized onions, deep roasted mushrooms, black truffles, and blue cheese. I would go lite on the blue cheese next time. Fries with rosemary were perfectly cooked. Very cool atmosphere with 80's music ripping up the place. One thing I would love to see is the 9'lb'r for $79.99 its actually over 15 lbs!!! Burgers go from $7- 15. No beer yet!!

Awesomely huge burgers. I liked allot the only part I didn't like was the ordering part. You have to stand up against the wall and then pay an extreme amount. The burger is worth it but if I paid that much I would want someone to come say HEY and take my order. Over all awesome but up against the wall not too nice.

For your basic burger it's $7 - doesn't include cheese and fries are extra. OK, I can deal with that. I had a voucher, so I was getting a deal any way. The food arrives at a decent time, maybe less than 10 minutes.

I had a few issues with my burger. First off, It was so big that it made taking a bite difficult. Second, After a few bites, I notice my whole hand is smothered w/ juices and grease. For some, this might be a good thing, because who wants a dry burger, but ugh what a total mess! Third, burgers were lacking flavor. I couldn't taste the sauce that was on it either.

I did like the bun, and overall the burger wasn't bad or what not. I enjoyed the enviroment  - 80's rock, music videos playing on the flat screens, and the colored lights were cool. Customer service was fine - no complaints there.

I don't think I will go back, i just expect a different style to my burgers. I would recommend you try it for yourself though - you might enjoy it more than I did.

Pretty tasty! We went as a group of 4 and the place was pretty empty. I just got a cheese burger and split and order of fries with the bf. My burger was pretty delicious and I'm not a huge red meat fan. The only real issue I had was he insane amount of lettuce that I had to peel off and the size of the tomato I had to deal with. I'd say it was thicker than the burger and made it impossible to bite into. Our friend who ordered one of the speciality burgers and it completely fell apart as he was eating it. Seeing how it wasn't that busy I would expect a little more care.

I'll probably be back though, I can deal with a little mess!

My wife and I had a great experience!  The staff was super friendly and suggested some of their favorite items.  I chose the Turkey Burger infused with portobello and gorgonzola. It was awesome! It's made to order and worth the wait.  I liked the 80's Rock vibe and music videos.  The soda machine is cool and gives the most options I've ever seen.  I've recommended this place to friends and will definately be back!  Welsome to San Diego BGR!

So I have been a bad foodie lately because I've been keeping to national chains where nutritional information is readily available in an attempt to get my weight under control. We were next door at Cafe Loma and decided to pop in for a burger. The staff were very helpful and steered me to the ahi burger (no sauces, no butter on the bun) and  the asparagus (less than 500 calories, thank you very much). The food was a-mazing. 4 instead of 5 stars because my friend didn't super love his veggie burger. The asparagus is definitely a single serving, by the by.

$20 for a burger, onion rings and a drink... You would expect it to be amazing right? Wrong. Bland, almost no flavor, and a truly unnecessary amount of grease. I would literally rather get a fast food burger and save the $20. Never again.

Expensive, Asked for well done hamburger and it came medium rare. Frys has an awful after taste. Music is good and soda machine is cool. Have to say, I can't remember having such a bad hamburger or fry's, I had the Cuben, just plain nasty.

Ok UPDATE:1/20/2012: I've added two stars to my review due to very positive owner response to my negitive experence. Were going to try the place again and will post.

Wow, something new for the burger lover and it's great! It's only been open for less than a month, so I'll cut them a break getting their service levels to match their foods.  The menu is very different (this is not an In-'N-Out replacement) and has some very creative items to choose from.  The fries where fantastic and complimented the burger very well.  The décor is cool, but that's only window dressing to the foods.  I found the place to be brightly light, cool and comfortable.  I see them in the next month really hitting their stride and taking off.

    Enjoy the food...I did!

Yuck. When we first walked in all we could smell was a bad sewer smell. Al of the burgers were very greasy, not moist, just greasy. I ordered the southwest burger and it was horrible. Tasted like a spoonful of chili powder or paprika, horrible rubber texture, dripping in oil not even seasoned with salt. It said it had green chiles and chipolte but I could not taste them. Onion Rings were disapointing as well. The Sliders were unseasoned and tough. Then to top it off not even beer to wash it down.  I'm willing to pay $9 for a good burger but this was really bad. Never again. Service was good.

I ordered the kids meal and I couldn't even finish it because the portions are huge!  It came with 2 sliders and french fries.  Not bad!

Went here with 3 people from work. Glad I ordered first. I got my burger and then the next burger was 5 minutes later and so on. I was almost done eating before the last burger was ready. Burgers were good but the tomato slice was like a half inch thick. All four fry orders were cooked differently. Some under cooked,m some over. The only reason they get a second star is because they have the new style coke machine with 160 flavor choices.

So we came to BGR cause it was recommended by my husbands friend. It was pretty good. We walked in and I really liked the atmosphere it was clean and they had some good tunes playing on the flat screens. I had the sliders with the sauce on the slide. They where really good. The meat was a little overcooked :/ the bun was a little too much. The onion rings where good but lacking flavor. I would go there again and try the asparagus fries those looked really good. The prices are a little steep. Thank god for military discounts :) I would try it again!

My first visit here just might be my last. There was only one couple already eating when I arrived. I wasn't greeted nor acknowledged by the staff. I took about 3-4 minutes to explore their menu before I ordered.

The Burger ($7) includes tomatoes, lettuce, GRILLED onions, Mojo sauce, etc.
    Choice of cheese ($1)
    Onion Rings ($4.50)
    0.5 liter Fiji water ($1.50)

You have the option of having your burger cooked medium rare or well done. For safety concerns, I have a problem with rare ground beef so I ordered well done; I wish medium was an option since my burger patty was dry, bland, and slightly burnt on the outside. The buns were toasted on the inside but the outside was cold and dry. Imagine old bread that was refrigerated and then just toasted on the insides. A big disappointment was that the onions were NOT grilled. I always order grilled onions or no onions at all. The menu said grilled so I didn't bother to emphasize it and I was punished with raw onions.

The onion rings are BLAND-BATTERED and not worth half their menu price. One medium onion thickly sliced with some generic batter.

This joint has an 80s diner atmosphere. I liked the two screens playing videos. The ketchup bottles on the tables were more on the filthy side; mine came with lots of grease and food particles from the previous handler.

I don't mind paying a little extra for quality food and ingredients. The truth with this place is that I feel like I've been hustled. I would like to see this place succeed since I've worked in food service, hospitality, and some small startups, so I know it's hard work. I just don't see this place able to compete with the likes of In-N-Out and Hodad's nearby. I'm not saying In-N-Out is standard, but I think the quality is better at less than half the price of The Burger Joint. Their employees are enthusiastic and I've never been disappointed with their food or service. I'm not a burger junkie, but there is a reason for the line of people inside In-N-Out and a line of cars waiting to get to their drive-through. As far as Hodad's is concerned, I've paid $15-$17 for a meal there and it included a better burger with GRILLED onions, a basket of great-tasting frings (fries and onion rings) with ranch dipping sauce, and a BEER.

I wish the owner best of luck and remind him that you only have one chance to make a first impression. Also, the immediate competition is pretty strong; Hodad's, In-N-Out, Rocky's,  Jack in the Box, McDonald's (not really, but reopening in summer 2012), Wendy's, Arby's, etc.
