Review from Mark H.
So I'm becoming better at not being cheap. Only marginally more than neighboring dive motels, I chose this one for its convenient downtown location.
Having not been to Nanaimo for years, my memory was fuzzy of the place. Very New West-like.
Our single-queen room was a tad small but fully reno'ed and had solid key elements: comfy mattress and decent shower head. Semi-harbour view on a gorgeous sunny weekend was great.
Other amenities include a free WIFI, communal rooftop balcony (wicked) and a laundry room.
With limited nightlife and only being steps away from The Globe (strip club), it's a good place to stay to party. -

It's a decent hotel, but nothing special. I stayed at the Howard Johnson for most of the week, which was less costly but very similar. Our room at both hotels was about the same size. The Best Western room was overall a bit nicer - newer LCD TV instead of an older CRT, but same channels all around. Both had free wireless. The bathroom was fancier at the Dorchester, but personally I'd rather save a few bucks than have a nicer tile set. Bed was comfortable, pillows were giant. Who uses these massive things??
There's parking at the Dorchester, but not a ton. We ended up having to park in a lot down the street instead, which we were reimbursed for. No continental breakfast - just a coupon for 15% off breakfast at their restaurant. We didn't take them up on this offer, so I can't comment. I believe there's a small fitness room on the second floor - we didn't check it out. No other real "bonus" amenities.
It's a nice location - older building, so it's got an ambience going for it.
Conveniently located across from the farmers market site, so if you're there on a Friday, check that out. -

I stay at the Dorchester weekly, and have stayed dozens of times by now, and have never had a bad or even less-than-perfect experience. The structure is older, I would guess as old as turn of the century, and it feels as though the building has either been added on to over time, or a couple buildings have been amalgamated, so the rooms are not a uniform size. As a result, some rooms are spacious but I have had a few (the minority) where the bed took up nearly the entire room. The hotel is fully updated though right down to flat panel TVs in the rooms, and the rooms have always been spotless. Staff are always prompt and friendly, however I may experience better service simply because the staff tend to recognize me as a regular. You can often find Internet special rates by booking through the main Best Western web site.

Review from M A.
Was very disappointed. Advertised as harbor view, but the window is only a couple feet tall and there is a good deal of furniture in front of it so even getting to it is a challenge. The building is old and we had to wind our way to one end of the building and back again to get to our room. The parking is minimal and half a block away. So arriving at night in the rain, was almost impossible to discover. Since the building is older I would've expected that the walls would have been more soundproof. However, I could hear all the sounds from next door, including love making, which is not what I want to hear. There were hardly any other people staying there so I don't understand why they insist on putting people right next door or above/below when there are many available rooms. Did not eat at the restaurant there as they weren't open when we wanted to eat. Won't be staying here again.
