Review from Kazuo O.
Stayed here because it is conveniently located in downtown on Granville St. where all the nightlife clubs and venues are. Surroundings were a little sketchy, a few bums here and there asking for money but encountered no zombies (crackheads). I stayed in one of the rooms in the courtyard because it's much cheaper and perfect for a one night stay. i found it odd that you have to go through the alley and I did encounter some teens doing who knows but other than that it was clear. I wouldn't recommend the courtyard for ladies hanging out late at night. I liked that they have underground gated parking, which was around $18 with tax. The courtyard room I stayed in did not have a fridge, microwave or elevator. It was $81 with taxes on a weekday with a onine coupon code. If I needed to see a show on Granville St I would probably stay here again.

My sister and I (in our 40s) stayed at this hotel from Wednesday 'til today.
I had booked it because it was a suite and the rate was good. The suite was a bedroom with two double beds, a living room/office area and bathroom. It's not a fancy hotel but it was clean and we liked it.
It is a short walk to catch the aquabus to Granville Island. Trendy Robson Street is a short walk away. Yaletown is just around the corner. Gastown is just beyond Robson Street. English Bay is not far away. Needless to say, my sister and I walked everywhere.
Granville Street is considered a seedier part of town ... there is a high concentration of bars. During the summer (May to September), the street closes just north of this hotel from 10pm to 4am on the weekends with lots of cops on patrol. Rather than feeling nervous or scared, we found it to be an interesting fun eclectic street. We felt safe walking down the street late at night and/or sitting on a patio having a drink.
WIFI is free and there is a charge for parking (we didn't move the car the whole time we were there).
The oddest thing are the bathroom taps ... the cold one is on the left and the hot one is on the right. Huh?! The shower had awesome pressure but the water kept going from cold to hot to cold to hot.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. -

I stayed at the Courtyard area. And even though I knew it was "outside" of the hotel, I still did NOT expect to be walking through a DARK ALLEY, to get to this "courtyard". Inside the courtyard, there are some people that might be sitting there, smoking, and it scared ME because I was alone, and it was DARK, and there was NOBODY around. So if you get attacked, either in the alley, or in this courtyard. No one would be around to HELP you, or to even HEAR you.
Also the windows are shaded with WHITE, and you can't open it. I LOVE hotels because there is usually a window, but nope this one has no window.
On top of that every courtyard room has a fire escape. Is creepy and the entire time I was there, I keep feeling like theres someone outside, and they can just come in.
As if that weren't enough, the toilet in my room was BROKEN. So I couldn't flush it. And when I approach the front desk to ask them about it, the girl looked at me with eyes that can kill. I swear, I am sorry to interrupt you in whatever you are doing, but you are suppose to be servicing ME and that is your job, kthanxbye.
Only good part is that is on Granville and is right in Downtown, other than that, nothing else is good.
I know for sure, I'll never come back. -

Our short lived but amazing time in Victoria had come to an end. We headed back to Vancouver for our last day stay in this wonderful and gorgeous country Canada.
After a quick cab ride from the PCL bus terminal we checked in here at the Best Western Chateau Granville. During our trip planning phase we contemplated on camping between this place versus a historic and a well known hotel located dead smack in the middle of the action with a Louis Vuitton store. Now you might be thinking, whoa but wait a minute y'all just went from the prince to the pauper? It was actually my idea to go with this one. And as it turned out, it was a wise choice. It slowed down the nose bleed from our bank account.
Anyhow this hotel was nice! Our little ones were bummed that they didn't have a pool but we all enjoyed the views and the fresh air from the balcony. Our suite had a living room, an office/work area with free Wi-Fi, microwave and a mini fridge. They had a good sized complimentary map guide of the area for guests.
Good and prompt front desk service! This hotel was a "Big Bus" stop location http://www.yelp.ca/biz... as well which was pretty cool and convenient... -

Don't let the French fool you, this hotel is not particularly 5 star or glamorous, but it does maintain a sense of class despite being located in the novelty sex store district of Granville Street.
The real thing worth mentioning is the hotel bar, located on the 2nd floor and beautifully decorated. It's probably the classiest place for a quiet drink in the downtown core, kept secret to the general public but open for business to all. Providing an exquisite view of the protruding clusters of lit up condos and bustling bar stars trolling for action, it's kind of feels like your at the zoo observing the primates, only you have ample comfortable seating and you're sipping a vodka martini. The room is cozy and ritzy, but keeps the prices trim, and the bartender and servers are exceptionally friendly and seem to truly enjoy the slow moving relaxed atmosphere.
Right on the strip, it's mixed in with the movie theaters, art galleries, and other places suitable for a first date, which makes this casual hidden spot ideal for follow up conversation over fancy drinks. -

Good place to stay, really good location. You can extend your checkout time to 12 without any problem.
They are a lot of taxes on parking but we can't avoid it.
The room was clean. -

I am usually a fan of Best Westerns (see Seattle review), but this one was particularly nasty. Despite the generosity of other reviewers, I was extremely put off by the location. The building--which looks, by the way, like a typical 1970s high-rise tower, which it probably is--is nestled right between sex shops and homeless encampments. From our 12th-floor window we had a great view of police action, as well as patronage of the adult entertainment industry around the corner. If you will be walking to tourist sites I would recommend paying a bit more to be closer to the waterfront and other attractions.
With that said, the interior was not as terrible as the exterior. Our room smelled musty and the decor was sadly dated, and the bathroom tiles were edged with black, which I think was supposed to be part of the design but made them look moldy. I felt skeptical of the cleanliness of the room, although the furnishings turned out to be perfectly comfortable.
I can't really speak to the other amenities of the hotel, because they were in the middle of a major remodel. So the bar and restaurant were closed (as was Granville Street in front of the hotel, which made getting in and out of the creepy parking garage quite difficult). And we paid more to stay here than we paid for the Empress (a Fairmont hotel) in Victoria. The hotel staff was friendly, which is one of the only reasons I'm giving it more than one star. -

It's possibly the best value on Granville. Very cheap. The rooms are bigger than usual hotel rooms. The service is pretty good. Some of the cheapness shows in the little things, but when I go to Van I just need a bed so whatev.

I always feel strange reviewing hotels as a person who visited a guest. Partly because it makes me sound like a prostitute, but mostly because I can never know their full services. That said I'll do my best with Chateau Granville as I have with so many others before.
What this place really has going for it is its location. It is just a foot into the sleazier end of Granville but still really in the heart of the 'entertainment district' so if you're interested in wandering home from a bar, this is a great bet. It has some wonderful views from its top floor and, as others have mentioned, a very nice bar as well.
Otherwise, not much makes it stand out from an old Best Western hotel. The rooms are about the same and the amenities are about the same. I said old as well because it's honestly a stones throw from the newer Best Western Downtown which is closer to Davie st. If you're looking for a spic and span newer place because old hotels give you the heebies, you might want to try there instead.
So yes, if you want a bed, close to bars and restaurants on Granville for a pretty cheap price, this is a good place to head. You can do much better in Vancouver hotel-wise but the location/price ratio with the Chateau Granville is definitely one of the better you will find. -

Stayed here for 2 nights in April. Overall, it was OK, but not great. I would probably find somewhere else to stay if I went again, but this place would do if the price is right.
Pros:
Convenient location. Secure parking. Rooms are decent size. Staff is very friendly. Free internet in the lobby on the shared computer (30 minute limit). Everything is within walking distance, and there were always taxi's right outside waiting for customers.
Cons:
The convenient location makes for a loud night. They had us on the 15th (top) floor, and by 11am we couldn't get any hot water. It was nice to have secure parking, but we assumed it was complimentary -- it wasn't, but we were NOT notified when checking it (they just handed us a pass to put on the dash board). -

I am normally pretty forgiving when it comes to hotels, but there was no excuse for one being this bad. First of all, the front desk was extremely rude and it was the first time someone literally threw my diver's license and credit card back to me (and not as a joke either). Next our reservation in the "tower" became unavailable so we got moved into the "courtyard". Getting to our courtyard room from the front desk involves going through a service hallway used the the cleaning staff, exiting a fire door, crossing an unlit open alleyway filled with shady characters, entering a compound that looks like a minimum security prison and hauling your own luggage up a narrow staircase. The room made it feel more like a prison, with a wire mesh frosted windows and steel fire exit door that led to a chain link fenced passage. I know people will say "but it's an inexpensive Best Western", but you can't use that as an excuse for something this bad.

I suppose my opinion may be a little skewed because I stayed at the Pan Pacific the week before... On the plus side, this place has cheap parking, free internet, and an actual fridge in the room.
Its location is great -- right in the heart of the downtown Entertainment District so you can stumble back from your establishment of choice without too much effort. The view of the 25 cent peep show store on one street and hookers on the other is also... entertaining.
Given the location, you can expect a bunch of drunks being stupid in the hotel. We've all been there. But the last time I stayed here, I wasn't drinking and just wanted somewhere cheap to sleep. Unfortunately, a guy who sounded like Ricky from Trailer Park Boys insisted on yelling at his girlfriend and breaking beer bottles until 4 in the morning. Fortunately, the manager was awesome and knocked off $20 in addition to giving me free parking.
Overall, two positive experiences and one negative (that the manager made right). It's not a bad place to stay, but don't be afraid to call up room service and let them know about the assholes next door if they're being obnoxious. -
Review from Hillary N.
For 79.99 a night I'm not sure if I can complain. But here's the dirt. We stayed in the courtyard, not the 100 bucks more main hotel. We just needed a place to stumble into after last call for gods sake. There's no fridge in those rooms. How on earth are we supposed to keep our beer and liquor cold? The clerk in the lobby suggested we fill our sink with ice from the ice machine. Did we do this? Of course we did, desperate times call for desperate measures. The entrance is in an Ally...a dark, damp, creepy crawly ally. No joke. The door man was incredibly rude to us, and he refused to even show us to our room (as he was instructed to do) he stood out the lobby door, pointed across the ally and said go over there turn left turn right blah blah. Jerk off. The room was big and "clean" but stuffy. You can hear everything going on in other people's rooms. And if we could hear them they could most definitely hear us =\ awkward. You can literally FEEL cars on the street driving by and hear people talking on the street. When other guests closed their big heavy doors or walked up the stairs you felt that too. Like the place was a building made from decks of cards. We were on the 3rd floor, there are no elevators. I can handle 3 floors of stairs...numerous times...in heels -_- whatever. It's literally right there with the fun stuff on Granville though, but if you're looking to be pampered and spoiled with all the comforts of a big hotel..eh.. maybe try the more expensive part of this place.

teetering between 3 and 4 stars. not the nicest of places but it's typically a good deal. You can't beat the location right on Granville amidst the bars and restaurants. Easy to get to.
