Looking for new electronics and technology to increase your cool factor and make your life more convenient? Check out the Best Buy in Signal Hill.
Dropped into this spot yesterday to have an Acer net-book serviced that was bought in December 2010. Now although most might baulk at extended warranties, it normally pays for itself and I normally pick one up for high-ticket purchases. Glad we bought the extended warranty on the Acer because this thing sucked. It rarely turned on. Processor was slow. Nothing ran on it at the same time when it was actually able to boot-up. Our original request was for a processor that could handle word processing and web-browsing at the same time. Not too much to ask. We were assured that the processor could handle this and more. It turned out to be an epic fail of technology.
They were going to send it in for warranty but I wanted a new laptop. They explained it was not possible. I asked for the manager. They told me the manager would only say the same thing. I politely repeated my request. A couple of minutes later, the manager, Mike, came over, and I explained the situation. Then stated that I am a tech-freak who spends a lot of money @ Best Buy, on high-ticket items such as a MacBook Pro, Bose soundbox, PS3, new Samsung TV, the Acer net-book and more. He listened patiently, looked at our receipt and the net-book, then went and reviewed our account.
He returned and said that he agreed with us and would apply the cost of the laptop to a new purchase. He said it was rare he could return with a smile in these situations but he was happy to say that he could based on our account history and ratio of purchases-to-returns. He also appreciated our friendliness and patience instead of flying off the handle at him. Something I would never do as my PR background is always about removing noise from any conversation.
My friend eventually settled on a beautiful iMac and then also purchased a sick new Samsung TV. All with extended warranty. They also did a free-data transfer to her new external hard drive for free - normally $80 - and then did a privacy-wipe of the memory on the net-book.
Mike and his staff, Shane [iMac] and Andrew [TV], were very professional and took care of everything we needed and more. I already liked Best Buy based on its non-hassling services and only buy my electronics there. They always take good care of us but this time was exceptional. Kudos to Mike and his team.
Moral of the story? It is possible to take-down the big bad boys of retail and hospitality at times. But it all depends on how you do it and if you have a credible gripe. No one, and I mean no one, likes to be yelled at for doing their job and following policy. But patiently stating your case and backing it-up, in this case, our extensive account history, and maybe even a couple references to brand and reputation management, can go a very long way.
Yelp yelp and away. -

A digital camera recommendation by their staff lead to a purchase. The camera was not great, and the functions they said it had were not included in this particular model. After a couple uses the camera broke so I tried to take it back. Best Buy is not taking responisibilty for the camera and is insisting I contact the manufacturer. I would not recommend this as a place to purchase a camera.

This is DEFINATELY the place to get your mobile device!
Has anyone ever had the experience where they get a blackberry/iphone, and then the bloody thing fails inside of a year...
THEN you go back to your service provider, and they say the contract isn't up.
THEN they want $400 minimum to cancel your contract.
THEN you can get a new plan with a new phone?
Has anyone live this? I sure have! Sadly, more than once! I'm working to buy phones.
Well... NOT at Best Buy! Did you know that if you are prone to glitchy PDA's, there is a plan you can buy for around $12 a month that allows you to bring your phone back for any deficiencies (except water, and physically throwing it at a wall). If the keys start getting screwy, or it starts getting glitchy, they will set you up with a working phone!
Oh! And ALSO, if the battery dies? They give you a new battery, at NO CHARGE! And if you have an Apple Iphone? if they determine it is battery related, they give you a NEW PHONE since the batteries can't be removed.
AND you can choose your service provider. They don't deal exclusively with one provider. You can take a look at what ALL providers are offering RIGHT AT BEST BUY.... and choose the plan you want.
Seriously... can you tell I'm a "little" excited about this?
So... Thurs, Jan 20th... I get a new iphone from Best Buy. I find out on Sunday (a few days later) that the camera doesn't work.
What do I do?
I bring it into Best Buy!
They give it a few pokes, and give me a new, working phone.
Badaa bing! Badaa boom! No muss, no fuss.
Okay... they gave it a few pokes first, but I walked out of there with a brand new phone, just like they promised.
Sigh.... this is one happy woman. -

News you can use: Best Buy now offers price matching!
Considering the fact that I'm not really a tech junkie, I do seem to end up in Best Buy an awful lot - at least two or three times a month. Usually, I'm accompanying my intimidatingly computer-savvy boyfriend on an errand - picking up parts, bargain hunting, or looking for cheap blu-ray discs (of which they are well stocked). Last night, we were actually there for me; I wanted screen covers for my Ipod, and I knew Best Buy would carry them, so we headed on down to this brand-spanking new location a half hour before closing. I made a beeline towards my product while D, per usual, ended up browsing the store looking for deals.
Being a hugely popular chain, the set up for this Best Buy is much like all the others: big, open, and brightly lit. There's a good selection of items, and it's all pretty standard fare. What you find in one location is pretty much what you can expect from another. However, I will say that the service here was better than I've experienced at other stores; the employees at Westhills were all very nice and welcoming without being obtrusive, as well as quick to offer assistance. All in all, a pleasant, and quick shopping trip.
