I like Berts, I like the feel of this place, its the taj mahal of greasy spoons.

The food is exactly what you would expect.

    CLOSED

Bert's is gone.  Good coffee.  Decent soups.  Quick meals. Friendly service.  Bert's had been around since 1948.  A few years ago it changed hands when a long-time patron purchased it from the original owner.  The HST, rising food prices, and increasing property tax has made it impossible to stay open.

    Too bad....  Goodbye Bert!

I've been coming here every week or so for 6 years. Last week I came in took a newspaper out of the box near the door...sat down in my usual spot.another server(not my server) .newspaper  and began YELLING at  me.Another server walked up to me took my newspaper and began YELLING and SCREAMING at me that I STOLE her newspaper. This is not an exaggeration. I tried to tell her that I got it out of the box..she ignored my protestations and continued to berate me in front of horrified customers. I paid for my tea and left, quickly. A week later I'm still shellshocked.  I phoned the manager..he didn't even have the decency to apologize or offer to have me back. FOLKS I HAVE TO TELL YOU THIS. The servers are unpredictable powderkegs here. Just completely nuts. I have been here a hundred times...no longer.

    So the myth is true.

Canadians know how to make Canadian bacon better than us Americans.

I mean, I heard the rumors but I had to see it for myself.

As a purist, I really hate to classify this "ham like" substance as bacon but since it's a critical element to my eggs benedict, I make exceptions.

With about 12 cups of hollandaise sauce covering two slices of canadian bacon the size of frisbees, my poached eggs were the ONLY healthy thing on this plate.

I would guess my breakfast had around 2500 delicious calories.

Granted, Berts is kind of out of the way but it's worth a drive.  It's the kind of place where the staff knows the local's names and are just as friendly to the obnoxious tourist types like myself.

    Aboot.

The only reason I am giving Bert's two stars is because the service was good.  Our server was pleasant and good at her job.

The food, however, was disgusting. My boyfriend and I each got bennies.
My english muffins were burnt and hard- and my boyfriend's were untoasted. The food came to us like it had been sitting under a heat lamp, and as Barry C. wrote, "The hollandaise was something I have never encountered and hope to not encounter ever." It was so gross- I've had better hollandaise from a packet- it tasted sour and it was everywhere.
The hashbrowns were pathetic looking and undercooked- honestly, I like good food, but I'm not the most picky eater- these potatos were barely edible.

I just hate going to restaurants and paying for food like this- I will never come back to Bert's. Greasy spoon is one thing, but this place is just gross.

I was introduced to Bert's years ago after a night out with friends that resulted in me passing out on someones coach. In the morning we needed some good greasy brunch to soak up the booze from the previous night..and grease we got and for a very good value...

Now years later...Bert's is just down the street from my new place. On moving day..tired and starving...we headed over for some cheap greasy eats...I had the eggs, sausage and pancakes....I don't know what they do to the pancakes but they are AMAZING..really fluffy yet dense..soooooo good! and I was happy it was still a good value...I look forward to more brunches at Bert's now that I live in the hood!

Time Warp back to the 60s

    Except for the prices.

Bert's is great for breakfast only. I have had lunch here and was not impressed but their breakfast is really good. I think they have the tastiest sausages and I love their egg bennies. Their coffee is ok as well for a place like this and they fill it for free. Good value for their breakfast.

A simple diner located on bustling Main, Bert's doesn't pretend to be anything but. It's simply, easy, and inexpensive and if you like the classic North American diner styles this restaurant is for you.

I went here with my boyfriend for breakfast. We both ate an omelette that came with potatoes. It was as good an omelette as I've ever had; choc-a-bloc full of bacon pieces, tomato, and oozing with lashings of delicious cheesy goodness. The potatoes weren't as memorable, but admittedly I did overstuff myself on the eggs.

The service was speedy and friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant. I'd go back again for sure.

Yes, this is not an upscale restaurant... but the smiles, the service, the food, and the people make it great.

I make my way there twice a week from downtown just for their great breakfast special (two eggs+pancakes+bacon/sausage)

No wonder why it has been at the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood for more than 60 years.

This is the place to go if you're missing the restaurant/diners of small town U.S.A.   This is exactly what Bert's reminded me of. Very simple decor and dining area. Bar stools at the bar for lone diners. Simple desserts. An array of different foods.  I went for dinner and just ordered a simple burger with fries and garden vegetable soup.  Dinner companion got some onion rings. Both fries and onion rings were just frozen bagged products dropped in the fryer. Burger seemed to be made from a frozen patty, but I could be wrong. I don't know my beef too well since I don't eat it much. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a heart attack tonight due to this dinner.  I definitely feel like I just ate in small-town U.S.A.

That being said, it's not bad. It's not superb. It works for the days you feel like putting on your fat pants. And everyone is allowed a day or two like that (per month..?).

Service: I was not so impressed initially that when I asked for water she gave me a small glass. However, when she promptly refilled it when it got empty, I retracted my first impression.  The only thing is she forgot to bring my soup. But it wasn't a huge deal. She apologized and brought it later.

One of the oldest restaurants on the block, by far. You want a walk down memory lane, well, come into this place located right on Main Street. Once  you walk in, you see how Main Street used to look like, with the memorable pictures of the block where Bert's is situated. You also get so see some old bobblehead dolls on the front till.

I've never been to this place before, and I wish I came here way before for there breakfast servings. My gf wanted some eggs benedict, and after searching the area out, I remember my younger brother mentioning this place and how good it is. Don't be discouraged from the outdated look in here, remember, your here for the food! The eggs benedict is probably one of the best I've had in the city, and it was huge in size and serving. The hash browns were loads of potatos, and even the regular coffee here was pretty good. I gotta come back here again for their other breakfast servings, hope to update you then!

Always on the hunt for a good, go to breakfast place. Comfort means price, quality, service and ambience.  Read the reviews and dropped in for breakie.   One had the full breakfast of 2 eggs, bacon and pancakes. I had the seafood benedict.  The pancake was not firm and spongy but soft , seeming under cooked. The seafood benney had shrimp and crabmeat. Errh...Crabmeat? Yeah the pollock kind of crabmeat. Chunks of the fake stuff. They could have chopped it fine to make it palpable. The hollandaise was something I have never encountered and hope to not encounter ever. Coffee was very good better than that found in too many establishments. When kitchen does simple day in and day out there is no get out of jail card for a bad day.   Old school is great if old school quality is served.
    No comfort here.
Sunshine Diner, 9th Ave Cafe no comparo, are  on the go to list.

I've eaten at Bert's a few times and it hasn't been too memorable. But today I had something worth writing about. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with scrambled egg, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, and mushrooms. It was damn tasty. Unfortunately, the hash browns weren't crispy enough for my taste. So I am writing this as a note to self...order that breakfast sandwich again. Mm mm mm.

I like this place, my boyfriend and I have been a couple times.  The eggs benny is really yummy and the french toast is great! The coffee is pretty amazing for something that comes from a pot!!! The service has always been good as well, very friendly!

I come to Bert's on average once a year because i have a strange craving for it. I only come for there very basic breakfast which includes hashbrown, toast, and eggs. Sometimes i get the pancakes too. Everything is ok here. It has the american diner feel. It's nothing classy but it ain't bad at all. Service is good. It's a great back up.
