* Back to the basics for #600 *
For review #600 it seemed to make sense to return to my Yelp roots and do an FTR for a small hole-in-the-wall.
This is a little Serbian snack food spot with a very simple focused menu that makes almost everything from scratch.
You order at the counter, and then sit at one of the 5 tables to enjoy the treats.
The menu on the wall doesn't have much correlation to what is actually available on any given day. But Erika (the chatty owner) will talk you through everything that is on offer to help you make a choice.
Today's offerings were:
- Goulash soup
- Bean soup
- Pljeskavica (a Serbian beef patty)
- Various sausages
- Bureks (both meat and cheese variety)
The pljeskavica were very popular with the mostly Serbian speaking crowd at every other table eating them. The pljeskavica were huge. I couldn't believe the size, and they are served on a type of roll that that I forget the name of - but that they bake fresh in-house.
But the bureks looked amazing, and I have a weak spot for things made with kore (phyllo) so I had the meat burek.
Turns out they make the kore in-house. Yes, they don't use frozen phyllo! They actually go to the trouble of making the incredibly thin crunchy layers on their own. Amazing. I don't know anyplace else in Vancouver that does that.
The burek was filled with a lovely stewed meat that contrasted the crunchy kore so nicely. Amazing dish.
I definitely will be returning to see what other specialties she has on offer!Listed in: Vancouver European Food
