Review from Chris A.
San Diego, CA
Well, I'm back. After a little hiatus, ok, I was lazy...what about it?! I'm back with this write up on a friend's newly opened (re-opened?) spot. It was around the 10th of February that I was actually there.
My friend Byron is roomies with another good friend of mine and SHE gets to taste his food all the time! My friends (Yelp Elitist Joanne was one of them) and I were finally privy to all his glorious culinary masterpieces...ok, well, whatever happened to be on the menu on that night. I'm not really sure what Byron's specialty is but if it starts with "F", ends with "D" and has to O's in the middle, I'm good with that.
So I'm finally writing and finishing this review up about a month after we visited Bergie's and I still salivate at the experience we had while we were there. It's like an experience after chopping onions, the smell never goes away. Byron started us off with bacon and cheese fries. So good that we ordered a second round just after it arrived. After tasting the just-crunchy outside of the fries with the explosion of just-soft cheese and just-crunchy bacon bits (real bacon bits and not bac-o's) we were not disappointed. While that was keeping our mouths busy, our eyes were feasting on the menu. Californ.I.A (Cali-for-nai-a, get it?), Coke Braised Pulled Pork, Full Moon Rising, Mac n Cheese and Steak Dip?!?! I was losing 1/2 a pound a minute from the workout I was getting just from looking at the menu and savoring the fries!!
We weren't done with the 2 order of fries yet when Byron comes out with some Coke Pulled Pork sliders (WHOA?!?!) He described the process to us and it may as well have been Angeline Jolie complimenting how I looked that evening! Pure bliss, period. The combination of the Coke reduction to form that syrup mixed in with just the right saltiness and seasonings was incredible. The bun was that kind that sticks to the roof of your mouth from just eating it. You know what I'm talking about.
I ordered up the Californ.I.A. Oh wait, I forgot to mention that we got some more potato appetizers in the form of tater tots instead of the fries. Bacon and cheese still in tow. Phenomenal. So I sit back and enjoy more beer and conversation with my friends while we wait for this behemoth to come out (while we waited I saw a few burgers come out. They weren't small.) The burgers were so big, there is literally a knife that Byron uses to keep it together. The patty is at least a pound if not a 1/2. It's thick and compact too, not spread out and thin. Sure enough, my order comes out and that knife really is there for a reason. I pulled it out to cut the burger in 1/2 and it basically just fell apart. This "thing" had bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled tomato, jalapenos and onions, guacamole, mayo, lettuce and a partridge in a pear tree!!! WHEW!! Satisfying to say the least. Everything about the burger was perfect. The bun, the patty, the accoutrements, the smell, the look, the way it dimpled when it smiled at me.
Needless to say, my highest award goes to Bergie's. An unbiased opinion, of course. :) -
Review from Mike C.
I was a little conflicted walking in here because I realized when I saw the Bergie's Pub sign outside, that this place used to be a pizza joint that I liked. But unfortunately that place closed down and it was replaced with this burger joint.
Walking in, I did feel some of that old nostalgic feeling, but that soon went away as I noticed some pretty good beer on tap. And I totally forgot about that pizza joint on my first sip of that ice cold beer. Yah, this place has some cold taps and their glasses are also ice cold. Now that's how I like it.
But drinking some beer wasn't just the reason why I came here. It was for those burgers that the majority of Yelpers who have given this place a 4.5 star experience.
So I ordered the Bacon Bergie Cheeseburger. They cook their meat medium. I made a special request to have it made medium rare. I did receive my meat as medium though. No real pinky juicy center. Oh well, maybe I'll just play along and see if it's still good as the night progressed.
But the burger didn't hit the mark. The bun also exacerbated the situation as it was dry and kept falling apart. My mouth was dry overall and it took longer to digest this meat. Yah, the meat wasn't there at all. I just saw it as a regular burger with no wow factor. The beer helped though.
I also ordered a basket of garlic tots. Those were pretty decent. Some of the friends ordered the bacon cheese fries which looked good. So if I were to come back I may order those next time.
I do have to admit that the management were pretty engaged and were willing to fix a problem. As a buddy of mine said that his burger was "so-so" and the manager lady was very genuine yet persistent in making something to my buddy's satisfaction. So I have to give them that credit.
Overall, a good experience here. I love the beer. The service was great. Plenty of tv's to watch some awesome sports. So I would definitely come back since this place is one of the few that have ice cold beer.Listed in: Epic Douchebaggery

Went here for a casual Friday night dinner with four friends. It's pretty small, but has a good burger and beer selection. The service was pretty slow, and the one waiter on duty spent most of his time talking to people at the bar. The one cook was.... not sure, but definitely not fast. However, we had a garlic tots appetizer, which pulled us through til dinner.
The food was served in good portions and pretty tasty. I'd give my pulled pork sandwich a 4/5. The mac and cheese looked quite tasty as well.
Good for a casual meal with close friends. I don't think I'd rave over it or take out of town guests here, but if someone suggested it, I'd probably go back. -

Perhaps the best burgers in SD... Cold beer, garlic fries, and a laid back atmosphere make this place a hidden gem! It's not much to look at from the outside, but this place is well worth the journey inside! Try the Californ-I-A!

Came here w/ fellow Yelpers Bern M, Mike C & Mauricio L. Didn't know anything about the place. So most unbiased.
Ordered two beer. Paid for it in cash. Service was fast and friendly. There were other yelpers there so quickly joined in the socializing ;-)
For dinner we each had burger and tots. Burger took some time to arrive. Guess it was a bit busy. When it came out, was not impressed witht he meat. Pattie was soggy and well undercooked. Also had an odd taste. Asked people at my table and they seemed to have a simlar opinion. Tots had something a bit lacking. True North still has the best in my opinion.
What made for a less than ideal experience? Manager came by and asked how things were. Everyone simply smiled and said "Good" I decided to say, "It's OK". The manager went into panic mode. She insisted she give me somethign else. I was ok finishing the rest. Thought it was a waste. For the next 5 minutes she simply stood there asking for my burger. Felt really awkward. People at my table also just stood w/o talking. Finally she left.
When it came time for the bill, it was three times our expectation. Turns out they had included items from the other yelp table. We explained it to them. They gave us the bill and pen. Asked us to circle our items. We did and hilarity ensued as one guy talked to another guy to another. It seemed they were lost. Took quite some time for them to figure out our bill. Sadly, it really wasn't that difficult.
San Diego has a ton of good burger joints, this isn't one of them. -

Bergie's Pub is one of those places where you go and ask yourself, why have I not ever been here before until now?!
I'm always on the hunt to search for those little hidden gems that our city has to offer. Bergie's has ranked high in my book with the awesome hospitality and incredible food they bring to the table and I would not hesitate in recommending that you check it out yourself after last night's dining experience. I'm sure once the buzz gets a lot louder of how good the food is, there will probably be a wait for a table in this charming little bar located in good ole Old Town.
I had the pleasure of trying it out for the first time last night when I heard through friends that they've spent some effort over the last few weeks in revamping their menu. I had no idea what was on their menu prior to last night's visit, but everything we had in our party of seven was enjoyed by all.
I'm not sure if this will be a regular menu item, but try out the Californ.I.A cheese burger: a double burger with California cheddar, bacon, grilled onions, grilled tomato, guacamole and grilled jalapenos as soon as humanly possible. Do what you need to do to get off the couch, in your car and over to Bergie's to try this magical patty of juicy goodness.
Do you like pork sliders? Well then get your butt over to Bergie's because the ones they serve here are crazy good and so flavorful. From what the chef told us, the pork was slow cooked for a good sixteen hours. Talk about tender!
Love fries? Love cheese? Love bacon? If you've answered yes to at least one of these, then you'll probably be just as happy as I was when I saw their menu had cheesy bacon fries. The fatties in us ordered it three times over. There was seven of us there inhaling this stuff, so that justified the need to order that many (along with the bacon cheddar tots too of course).
Overall, we enjoyed our dinner at Bergie's last night. It's not your typical bar food, it's ten times better! If I'm in need of finding a charming little bar to watch a game at while I enjoy a few pints of the local craft brews on tap to wash down the magical dishes coming out of their kitchen, I'm sure you'll find me back at Bergie's...with a whole order of cheesy bacon fries in hand all for me, the cheesy, bacon and fries lover, forever. -

Very disappointed after reading all the great reviews. I'm a hot wings junkie, so I was excited to try this place out while visiting SD, but nothing of what I expected. As nice as the owner was, the service was terrible. The wings I ordered were flavorless and they provided sauces on the side, even with that, it didn't do anything for me. Please read Marcie M.'s post, we were there together. :/

A friend of mine from Sacramento was in town visiting this past weekend, and she noticed the great reviews for this restaurant's wings. So we decided to give it a shot. The owner was sitting outside and was very nice and sociable. He raved about all the food at the place, especially the wings and their "open face" bacon cheeseburger meatloaf on sourdough bread.
For us, it was all talk and no delivery. My "open face" bacon cheeseburger meatloaf looked like a regular sandwich on sourdough sliced bread. Not putting the top slice on is not what I'd call open face. The meatloaf was about the size of a burger patty and not very flavorful. I didn't even taste bacon. I even had to ask the waitress, "This is the bacon cheeseburger meatloaf?" VERY DISAPPOINTED.
In addition, my friend's wings were tasteless and bland. She didn't even bother finishing the bucket because even with ranch or other dipping sauces, they weren't tasteful. The service could've been better too. I don't know how many times we waved the waiter/waitress down and they didn't see us.
If it weren't for the owner being so nice, I would've given this place 1 star. -

BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.
I was groaning the entire time I was eating it. My husband got the Philly Cheesesteak and was also super impressed. It's in a really random spot and looks a little sketchy on the outside, and it definitely isn't the place to take your boo for Valentine's Day or anything, but the food was amazing and the service was too. We will definitely be going back asap. -

First off, I am so bummed that it took us a year to finally visit Bergie's Pub; it's heartbreaking that we are going to have to go back over and over and over again to play catch up.
Best burger (right up there with Scrubby and Lloyd's for you San Luis Obispo folks) that we had had in a long time and very delicious garlic fries. Of course, after reading a few of the earlier reviews -- definitely will be having tots on our next visit (for comparison purposes only).
Bergie's Pub is a very casual experience. When you first walk-in, it kind of feels like walking into beach front joint without the sand and crazy attitude. I personally loved the little bit of Avila Beach nostaglia on the wall (reminded me a lot of my home town). Bergie's Pub is just a little ways off the beaten path to Old Town, but still close enough to grab a Cold Stone after an excellent burger and a few beers. -

Ah-maz-ing. who I presumed to be the owner was also very nice and patient with us 5-separate-ticket-out-of-towners. I must really like hyphens. Nonetheless, great food, great prices. Be warned, the Maguiver is in fact 2 patties and 2 full grilled cheeses. :) and you will want to crawl into bed after eating there due to the sure fullness you will experience no matter what you order, because it's just too good to be left behind! In fact, im in bed right now!!

I think this is the most fun I have ever had in Old Town! This is a small, neighborhood place, just far enough away from the tourist scene to be local and to welcome the adventurous visitors who want something local and fun and are willing to step outside of the park area to get it. I was blown away by the friendliness of the servers, cooks, OWNERS and patrons. Yes, the owner is there and he will want to know how everything is/was before you leave and will shake your hand! My burger was fantastic! It was hand-formed out of real meat and tasted great. The fries were done perfectly. Don't expect slam-bam arrival of food. They do it right here, to order. Beer selection is an adventure in LOCAL micro-brews. If you want real San Diego and real San Diegans, this is the place to be. It's not the least bit pretentious, just fun people having a good time.
Pricing is very reasonable and they have Friday Fedora day. Wear a Fedora and get 25% off - a good excuse to visit Village Hat Shop. Sandwiches are good and can be customized. The menu is straight-forward, printed on newsprint and a cool souvenir to take home. -

To you burger lovers out there, go...run...drive...to Bergie's! But let me say, Bergie's isn't just for burger lovers, it's for all food lovers!
I have gone to Bergie's 3 times now. The first two times were great, but I was waiting to write my review after the 3rd time I was going to eat at this establishment because they were rolling out their new menu. On my 2nd outing there I did have the Coke Braised Pulled Pork house special with homemade cole slaw...delish! Each bite had the perfect combination of pork, slaw and bread. I think I inhaled that one. I got to enjoy some fries with melted cheese and, my favorite, BACON! (they had me at bacon) And I also indulge in some buffalo wings, which were not your wimpy wings, these babies had meat on them and just the right amount of sauce.
With their new menu, there were so many yummy sounding dishes on it, I wanted to try it all! They have a Chef's Mac N Cheese which states its what the chef is in the mood to make for that day. The day I went the chef was in the mood for pulled pork and bacon. Now, I wanted to jump on this, but already had my mind set on the Californ.I.A. We were thinking of sharing the Mac N Cheese, but we started with Bergie's Fritto which is shrimp and calamari crisp fried served with their own tartar sauce and vodka cocktail sauce. I actually heard about this new menu item before I went there and was wanting to try it when I heard about it. These weren't thick fried pieces of shrimp and calamari, it was lightly fried and the sauces were so good. You know when you have the little bits that are left? Well, I kept picking at the little bits of calamari, trying to finish each piece, but had to save room for my burger. I had only seen a picture of the Californ.I.A, and then I saw it in person, on the table and wow, this thing was huge! It had 2 patties with cheese, bacon, grilled tomatoes, grilled jalapenos and onions, and finished with guacamole and mayo. This burger is delicious! The patties were cooked perfectly and juicy. The flavor was definitely there in every bite. I could only eat half of it, but was kind of glad because it meant I could eat the other half the next day, yay!
The owners and staff at Bergie's are super nice and you can tell how much they care about their little pub. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the feel of the place. If you want to watch a game, there are TV's there and they have local brews on tap.
I will be here again! I think my goal is to try every item on the menu...who's with me? -

I'm lovin' it! Fresh veggies, great buns, grass fed beef, and a nice selection of local brews on tap and cheap (2 before 7pm). Great staff and Bergie in the back cooking your burgers so you know it's gonna be great. Just 5 star and still hole in the wall enough to be a hidden gem.

We loved the burgers (finally some tasty meat!), the tots and the mac'n cheese. The service was very good, and they even had live music - although I don't think it's a usual occurrence.
The full bar is also a key top off to fulfill our wildest expectations. We have absolutely no complain to report, we'll be back... probably next week... and the following one... -

I had a BLAT and fries and a couple of pints of delicious Ballast Point Sculpin IPA. The fries are excellent. Good enough to eat without condiments. All of the components of the BLAT were very good, especially the bacon and the bun. The bartenders gave me great service and were super friendly. Also, the prices are very reasonable. Thanks Bergie's. I hope to be back soon.

If I lived close by, this would be my neighborhood bar. It took me awhile to make the connection between the love story on the menu with the actual people working there. Awwww. I love me a good love story!
The tots are crunchy and delicious, the wings taste superb, but the real king of the bar are the burgers. The patty is thick and delicious, albeit a little overcooked. The brioche buns are amazing and fluffy. I really like the way they are buttered and toasted.
Beers are local and wonderful. Beware the Old Rasputin tap - usually takes awhile for a pour. Servers are really nice! -

This place is adorable. I love the couple's story behind the opening of their restaurant and the new newspaper menu is cute!! I took mine home :-) The couple is always there and they wear their hats and seem to always be having a lovely time.
I am, though, subtracting one star for the service. The restaurant is not that big. Maybe I'm overly critical because I work in a restaurant, but there was one other table. I should not have to walk over to the bar to get my water refilled and my check. It wasn't THAT bad the first time we came here, but my most recent experience here did not live up to my standards. -

Considering my last name is Beargie, I was quite surprised to find an almost-doppelganger of a name in old town. We had to stop, and are truly glad we did.
Beer was great, wings were great, burgers were awesome, service was great.
Wish I had a neighborhood bar like this, I'd be broke in no time. -

I discovered Bergie's when I moved into the neighborhood a few months ago. From the outside it looks a bit sketchy (thank you sketchy liquor store next door), but inside it's very clean and not divey at all. I go there for lunch from time to time; they have AMAZING home made black bean veggie burgers (seriously - just try them!) Tots are great too.
They have a really good local beer selection including my favorite - JULIAN hard cider - on tap!! Good happy hour specials too.
The place is small but the service and food are great. Go there! -

Just realized - San Diego has a ton of burger joints!! (Although the name refers to itself as a pub.)
My coworker raved about this place so of course we had to check it out for lunch. I'm a good Yelper and made sure to read some reviews and look at their online menu before heading out.
Bergie's is in a random corner plaza next to a liquor/deli in Old Town. We arrived at about 12:30pm on a week day and the place was relatively empty.
FOOD:
- BERGIE SINGLE (they go up to double, and even triple!) with TATER TOTS! The menu indicated that all burgers were cooked to medium, but mine was more of a medium-rare in the middle, so I only ate about half of it. Good thing was that the meat was well seasoned and was nice and juicy. Ahhh and of course the tots. If you don't like tots, we can't be friends.
- I sampled a SPICY CRISPY WING and was pleasantly surprised. The skin had a nice crunch to it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit too salty.
- FRIES. The fries were sooo good!! They were perfectly crispy and not greasy at all.
The menu offers more variety than your typical burger joints - chili, mini corndogs, chicken nuggets/tenders, and some standard sandwiches. Their "Extra Topping" selections are quite interesting - who puts peanut butter or pastrami on a burger? But hey, I'm sure someone will create a masterpiece to call their own. I read a review about a cheese burger with a fried egg on top that I might have to try...Listed in: ROTD!, Boigas & Fries

Hands down the best burger joint in Old Town, and probably San Diego.
Bergie's is a hidden gem a block or two away from the main tourist area nestled unassumingly in a small shopping center. They have mouthwatering, savory, delicious burgers. Burgers so good that I'm practically drooling as I write this.
The place is small, a handful of tables and the bar, and has a couple of decent brews on tap. To top off the epic burgers and chill vibe, they also specialize in... TATOR TOTS.
Yes, this is the greatest place ever.
You can get plain 'tots or ones covered in cheesy bacon sauce. I didn't have the heart to go for the latter, but I imagine they're amazing!
Bergie's burger is easily in my top three of all-time burgers, and for a self-professed burger lover, that's a big deal. -

Thank goodness for grandparents! My hubby and I was able to have a "lunch date" since the kids were spending a few hours with their Nana. I was starving, being that it was close to 2p and I haven't eaten all day. Hubby suggested Bergie's as a place we should try since we couldn't agree on any other place or type of food to eat...so I guess you can't go wrong with burgers, right?
The place was definitely "hidden" away from the hustle and bustle of Old Town. I was not expecting it to be in the corner of a little strip of a parking lot, next to a liquor store. Very small place but definitely had the vibe of a hamburger joint/pub. Menu is very simple...single, double, or even triple burgers, chicken wings, tator tots, fries, onion rings, and lots of options for toppings. They also offer sandwiches, soups and salads.
Hubby ordered the Bergie Bacon Cheese Double and made it a basket by adding garlic fries (11.49) and I had the Bergie Single with garlic tator tots (8.49) and added pastrami to my burger for an extra 1.49--I don't know where this craving for pastrami came from, but I saw it on the menu as a topping option and I had to have it...heehee.
The burgers were SOO juicy and huge! By the time you add the lettuce, pickles, tomato and onion slice and top bun to the patty, the burger becomes a tower! The fries/tator tots were crispy and not greasy and they were loaded with fresh garlic and parsley...yummy! We couldn't finish our burgers cause we were so stuffed! Definitely not eating dinner tonight!
Hamburgers are usually the last thing I think of when I'm pondering what to eat, but Bergie's is good enough to think of next time I have a burger craving and another lunch date with hubby. -

Really awesome, friendly, quick service. Great, delicious, tasty food. Only giving them 4 our of 5 stars because we were promised free beers after coming when they were in the middle of renovation during operating hours, and were not even acknowledged when we came back only an hour later. But definitely recommend visiting! You HAVE to try their Garlic Tots!

Bergie's, why did you have to discontinue the stuffed deep dish pizza?
Unfortunately Bergie's lost a few customers because of that reason. My boyfriend and I had our hearts set on some deep dish pizza the other day. We checked out the menu online, it wasn't there. (uh oh!) So we called the restaurant to find out that they no longer serve deep dish pizza. Our hearts broke, you know that feeling when you had your mind set on something you wanted to eat, then you find out you can't have it anymore, but by the time you find out you're STARVING so it's nearly impossible to think of anything else... we were two hungry angry people.
Of course I had to spread the word to my family and friends (the people that recommended Bergie's in the first place) that also loved their deep dish, they won't be coming back either, sorry.
Oh we also attempted to visit Bergie's a few months ago to grab some pizza, but for some reason they were closed every Sunday for a couple of months.. talk about disappointed! We did end up going to Lefty's.
Anyway, the deep dish pizza was really good, too bad we won't be coming back. -

Good burgers. I had the black bean veggie burger, and what was good about it, is that it has black beans throughout. Meaning, it's not a mash like most black bean burgers. You can get any burger with the veggie/black bean patty substituted. My hubby and girlfriend both had the Bacon Cheeseburger which they thought was juicy, flavorful, fresh and filling. We shared the Garlic Fries and Hot Cheeto Tater Totts which were okay. The service wasn't that great, there was only one server in an uncrowded joint and she was pretty consumed with the basketball game. She seemed to be a little dingy too because she brought us two orders of totts instead of the fries and totts. She also forgot our sauces for them until we were halfway done. I used the restroom and it was filthy and disgusting. No hand soap and the toilet kept running and wouldn't flush. I could only imagine what the kitchen looked like. Glad I didn't use it before I ate. Would I go back? NOPE!

If you didn't know it was here, you'd never know it was here. Bergie's is in the corner of a very small shopping plaza near Old Town. I double checked my Yelp directions to make sure I was getting there correctly.
I had been in the mood for a hamburger and was determined to get one.
Fired up the search engine on Yelp and stumbled onto Bergie's, which looked very highly rated.
Drove over with the spouse and sat myself at the bar and ordered a cheese single burger with bacon loaded fries and a pitcher of Ballast Point Yellowtail.
The menus are given to you in the style of a newspaper, with articles about the restaurant on the front and back and food on the inner pages.
I could not have been more pleased with my burger. It had great flavor and plenty of vegetables available to choose as topics. I added a bit of mustard and it was perfect.
The loaded bacon fries were covered in bacon and cheese. Sea salt made them even tastier, which comes on them.
My wife had the sliders and was equally as pleased as myself.
Ballast Point beer stands for itself.
You would do well to come here and enjoy a burger. My wife and I certainly will. -

What a great find. Don't be sketched out by the storefront look, take a peek inside and you'll find why this place is rated well.
I was visiting San Diego and checking out Old Town (awesome). Then wanted a burger and some beer, and this is the place to go.
The owner was serving people, knew the names of regulars and vowed to always have a beer for $2.
The appetizers are huge and the burgers are very good.
Mention Yelp or check in on Yelp to see if you can get any discounts. -

This is a revised review from 5 stars last week. I was impressed the first time that I had to make a return visit. (Consistency is KEY!)
This time, the burger was salted so much, I could not finish it! It was also over cooked (burnt). The owner Mike Berg would not have been happy with this offering from the kitchen and based on this experience, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives will not be showing up anytime soon for a "best of" unproven burger joint. Sorry Mike.
I also tried the crispy, spicy wings which were eh.... so so.... They are lightly battered and fried, but not tossed-in sauce. (naked)
The positive is the Coors light draft was $2 and half price cheeseburger on Monday's. Based on me not even being able to finish the burger and almost lapsing into a salt coma, a 3 star may be more than generous for this trip.
Happy hour 3-6 pm and has different special every day.

I went to San Diego on a business trip with a couple of my coworkers. We had just landed and the guys decided they wanted a burger. I pulled up my handy dandy Yelp app, and did a search for "burgers." Bergies showed up with high ratings and a mere 1 or 2 miles away. I suggested it, they agreed, and off we went.
They started questioning my choice when we found ourselves in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood. However, when we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a bright, cheerful, and friendly little restaurant. The owner came over and greeted us personally and took our orders. We each ordered a burger with tater tots. They came out quick, and they were FANTASTIC! The buns were buttered and grilled, and the tater tots were loaded with garlic. Definitely hit the spot, and definitely one of the best little burger joints I've ever been to! Too bad it's on the opposite coast from me. -

Bergie's Pub is a welcomed addition to Old Town! Sandwiched between a liquor store and a dry cleaners in the corner of a tiny strip mall, this unassuming bar located a few blocks from Old Town's main drag is a hidden nugget for hungry and thirsty locals tired of the neighborhood's celebrated, but touristy, Mexican fare.
Bergie's is owned and operated by a guy named...Bergie. His casual and friendly demeanor are reflective of someone who's found an opportunity to do what he always wanted to do: open a great neighborhood bar and grill. The walls are decorated in an eclectic array of what are seemingly Bergie's personal interests: Beatles portraits, Padres memorabilia, surf photos, 100 year old black and whites of San Diego's olden days and even a few family portraits. One gets the very warm sense that Bergie's was thoughtfully and carefully crafted by a local family, not a corporate restaurant design team.
The drink menu sports the standard domestics (naturally) but also includes several local micros like Stone and Ballast Point. Wouldn't be a home grown shop if Stone IPA wasn't on tap, right? Guinness is also available on tap.
The kitchen boasts that they've got one of the best burgers in town, but I elected for a veggie option, a delicious lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwich perfected by a buttery soft bun. Had to go with the tots as a side, which were crisp and garlicky.
Not all is perfection. That bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a day or two and the place isn't big enough to accommodate darts, pool or a jukebox, but Bergie's is certainly "As good as it gets!" in the opinion of this Yelper.
Welcome to the neighborhood and we'll see you again soon! -

Let me start by saying do not go here if you are watching your calorie count. The buns are slathered in butter and warmed on the grill. The cheese on the burger is enough to ooze off the sides into those nice hardened globs that are so fun to eat. However, this is part of what makes their burgers so scrumptrulescent.
I had the side salad, my husband had the tator tots. The tots are your regular, frozen (I believe) variety, and then covered in chunks of garlic. I tried a couple--not my fav--but he liked them. The side salad was a healthy mixed lettuces and spinach with some tomoatoes and cucumber.
My only real complaint would be my beer pour on the Guiness. It came to me 80% foam and 20% beer. A definite beer-pour-foul on that one. :) But prices were decent.
I will definitely go back and I want to try the veggie burger. The reviews are good on that one and it sounds delicious. -

Good beer selection for a small local place. I have to say the selection is much better than all the other places in Old Town. I guess I should have had the hamburger, but I ordered the chili dog. Big mistake!!!! The cook did not read the order correctly and put an order of tots and and bowl of chili on the pickup counter. This was after I had to wait for my beer which tool about 5 minutes to pour because of all the foam. After over 5 minutes, I was handed a glass which was 3/4 beer and 1/4 foam.
The gentleman was nice enough to offer to top it off, but never come back to offer after the foam has settled. The woman who took my order must have been new. She did not provide me with any utinsils under I asked.
Having seen the "cook" mess up the order, I continued to watch him prepare my food. I was surprised when I say him cook my hot dog in the microwave.
The sight of the kitchen was a little disturbing. It does not appear that cleanliness is a priority back there.
