Always packed.
Enjoyed a Bergie Lager as I sat at a table shared by others.
Watched the Master's (Friday session)
the corned beef sandwich looked good.......but was not able to avail myself.
I have gum in my mouth and I need to drink my beer.
I will just put my gum........................................?? -
Review from Andrew C.
I'm constantly dumbfounded by how poor the food options are in one of the largest hub airports in the nation. And I'm not even looking for anything fancy like 'locally sourced this and sustainably raised that.' I'm more enticed by options and in this particular wing of O'Hare, the options are total shit.
Aside from an extremely weak food court with very little seating and the occasional "Chicago dog" cart, Berghoff is the only "restaurant" facility in the entire terminal. And my, my, does this place suck.
They serve sandwiches, mostly, but will do some other things as well. Most traffic through here is for sandwich orders. The sandwiches are no frills. Dry sandwiches in most cases (which is fine with me). Meat, cheese, bread. Done.
Unfortunately the cleanliness and service never seem to be up to par. This restaurant is straight up dirty as hell. It's not uncommon to see passengers cleaning the tables themselves. This whole place could use a wipe-down with, oh I dunno, turpentine.
I've had a reuben and one other sandwich here. The reuben was definitely better. On my most recent visit the guy in front of me ordered a very simple corned beef and swiss. The sandwich was thrown together in about ten seconds and as it was being handed to the guy he says, "Oh, can you toast that?" The sandwich guy straight up rolled his eyes, scoffed and threw his arms up in the air.
Really?
The guy ordering the sandwich took the time to apologize, saying he though they automatically toasted every sandwich.
All in all, the Berghoff Cafe is pretty weak but unfortunately it's one of the only options in the terminal with food that looks even remotely appetizing. Captive audience syndrome strikes again.Listed in: Chicagoland

Just landed for a 90 min. Layover. Havent eaten all day. Berghoffs looked like the best bet....
OHHHH soooo goood....Rueben for $10. Effing delish. Steamy fresh carved corned beef 7-8oz, warm ryebread, sour kraut, and ketchup bagged thousand.... it all worked perfectly. The dressing coulda been better presented, but hey...its no frills airport grub....
Not bad for a airport dive.....im a fan..... -

Good beer, great and huge cuban sub, may be enough to share. Best place to eat in this airport.

C-Gate Oasis : Good food, great food, reasonable prices.

Review from Walter K.
For an airport, this place is surprisingly good. The sandwiches are made from hand carved meats. The Berghoff serve some good beer.
Pick up some of the house made beef jerky for your flight. Although its not jerky at all, it's still a tasty meat snack.
Huge crunchy pickles accompany your sandwhich.
Grab a seat that faces the walkways and sit back, enjoy your good beer and sandwich, and settle in for some fine people watching. -

The best way to enjoy this is- With two people one should try to manage to stake a seat at the bar while the other waits in line.
Food-
5 Stars. The best airport food I've ever had. I am partial to corned beef so I might be biased.
It's solid deli sandwiches. I have never tried anything else, that would be an error on your part if you do. If you want something else walk to it.
Other-
3 Stars. Seating area gets extremely crowded and you pretty much have to fight for a seat unless it's slow in C terminal.
Value-
3 Stars. Overpriced, but it's an airport.1 Previous Review: Show all »

When I'm fortunate to have the time to visit Berghoff Cafe in terminal 1 (I live in the Bay Area) I am always satisfied with their sandwiches. I think this is the best airport food that I have ever eaten- I've been a customer for 20 plus years.

Review from Nicole W.
My experience with airport food has been a sad story. It's usually overpriced, fairly bland and just overall depressing. However, I was practically skipping down the terminal after I wolfed down my corned beef sandwich from Berghoff Cafe.
It's freshly sliced high quality meat. It's fast. They have beer. They also have root beer. The corned beef is really damn delicious. With swiss, on rye. Tasty tasty. $9 and change for a sandwich and a medium drink. This seems almost affordable compared to some of the other crap food I've purchased in the airport.
Buck the fast food trend and get ye some Berghoff.Listed in: Chicago Suburbs

My visit to Berghoff Cafe was a tale of two meals.
The corned beef on rye was decent. The meat was tasty but there wasn't enough of it in my sandwich. I had to wait 10 minutes for the sauerkraut and the mustard comes in packets. Yes, a place that makes sandwiches can't be bothered to spread some mustard on bread.
The sausage pizza was a crime against humanity. In a city with such great pizza, how is it that an angry mob with torches and pitchforks hasn't burned this place to the ground? Must be the airport security... Bland, bread-like crust, bland greasy cheese, and six tiny cubes of sausage made this the worst pizza I've eaten in recent memory.
If you're pinched for time and you're trapped in Terminal C, the corned beef sandwich is a better option than starving on a 4-hour flight. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and go to Terminal B for some better food options... -
Review from Susan Z.
Reuben was large and tasty and made to order. I had some time between flights and was well worth the walk down the terminal to sit and eat. I'll definitely go back to try their other sandwich and soup combos. Service was VERY helpful and friendly.

What is this?!? Airport food actually worth eating?!? Maybe I wasn't awake yet or maybe my taste buds took a vacation too. Berghoff really hit the spot!! My breakfast bagel was awesome! Eggs, Bacon, cheddar cheese on a bagel, all made fresh in front of you... nothing is better then that! They actually have a nice selection of breakfast items and the service is ok.
Be prepared to wait in line, but it's better then those carts or McDonald's. Located in Terminal 1, Concourse C -

After waking up at 4AM to catch an early-morning flight, knowing that gates to the West Coast will be all the way in Concourse C, remembering there is a Starbucks right there and at least I'll get my joe on before boarding, can you guess my disappointment when the Starbucks isn't open at 6:30AM?
The only recourse was standing in the long line at Berghoff Cafe because I'm sure it was the only recourse for many others boarding 4-hour flights to various cities in the West Coast (except for those boarding for Vegas, of course, who probably had alternative needs other than coffee).
There was only 1 person behind the food-counter, attending to a line of 25 people that only kept growing, and another at the cash-counter, who kept vanishing for long periods of time -- I'm guessing he was doubling up as the cook in the kitchen too.
I got my toast (because they only had cinnamon raisin and plain bagels) and latte (which took quite some time to prepare) -- neither were very good. The general sense of grumbling, chaos and confusion didn't start my day off too well! I would give it 2 stars, but at least they were open to serve me my caffeine at that hour and so I added a 3rd! -

I agree with some of the five star reviews that this place is better than a McDonalds and has some variety and some "real" food. However, I have noticed that it is all kind of bland here. For example the reuben with thousand island sauce, bland. Their sauer-kraut - bland. The meats, salty...but otherwise bland. Dunno, guess I am just thinking they could do better and probably need a menu refresh.

As someone who practically lived at O'Hare, I know that there aren't many options for "good" food here. Yes, McDonald's is everywhere (shhh..I won't tell anyone that you like their fries). And you can get an overpriced Chicago-style hot dog and Cinnabon here, too.
But the best kept secret here is the Reuben sandwich from Berghoff. My guy, who is a Reuben fanatic, absolutely loved his sandwich. I was very happy with my sandwich, too. Freshly carved, moist corned beef with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing on rye. If you're ever stuck at O'Hare and fed up with the usual fast food choices, go here. Don't forget to order a beer, too.Listed in: Sandwiches galore, Stuck at O'Hare

I have to say, working at the airport one is restricted to the offerings each establishment sets out to make their buck. McDonalds was the only palatable option until I found this place. The corned beef is the best. Generous portions, tasty, and sliced in front of you...you wouldn't know you were in an airport. It's nice to see a restaurant that still takes pride in the food they serve...even if it is under "Cattle car condition.

Not the experience you expect from airport food. Quite possibly the best Reuben I have ever had. That may be influenced by the fact that it was completely unexpected, but it was a very good sarnie. Freshly sliced corned beef, kraut, 1000 island on toasted rye.
Did I mention that they brew their own beer? It just keeps getting better :)
Berghoff's - taking airport food to a whole new 'plane'...groan
So if you have a lay over in O'Hare, make your way to terminal C about gate 25 -

Yelping a bar/restaurant in an airport, what's next, Yelping a DQ? It's been done.
Anyway, the experience surprised me and I thought other road warriors should know about it.
The scene:
Red-eye into O'Hare from Sea-Tac at 5:00AM. Layover of 2 hours. Need grub, given the Ginza sushi has been processed long ago. Didn't want Starbucks muffin. Berghoff's is right by my gate. They serve big breakfast sandwiches and burritos. I had the Spanish Croissant Sandwich, basically an omelette with cheese and diced veggies in a croissant. Big, fresh and tasty.
If you're in O'Hare terminal C (near C25) with a craving for a "good" breakfast, this place is the answer. -

Belly up to the bar, talk politics, celebrity gossip and local BS while sipping a bloody mary and trying your hardest to ignore the creepy mofo next to you.

Reuben was fine. As I was warned off of all ORD food this 3 star review seemed worth posting. Definitely better than a united snackbox.

Ok, besides McDonald's, and depending on the airport, I typically AVOID airport food. You get the idea...bland tasting, cold, soggy breads...no thanks.
But because of my job...I travel a lot...and sometimes, it's the ONLY option.
So before a long early flight a couple of weeks back, I went in there to get some food to take on the plane. Although I was on first class...please do not GET ME STARTED about airplane's supposedly gourmet version of microwave food...I opted to bring my own without taking any chances.
So I ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich with egg and bacon, which also came with a hash brown patty.
Even after 40 minutes into the flight, the sandwich was still warm and very tasty and the has brown patty was still crispy...It even made some first class passengers inquire about my choice....HANDS OFF...ALL MINE and I AM NOT SHARING! :)
Yup, shows that if you provide quality...the food tastes good! So glad to have one inside the United terminal! -

Okay, so it has taken me way too long to finally write this review. OMG! This place is awesome for airport food. Especially for O'Hare, home of the 'usual suspects' tasteless fast food-eries. Thankfully ORD is trepidly getting on the culinary bandwagon that SFO is on with adding a few higher end food options, a welcome addition for persnickety palates such as mine.
Berghoff Cafe has been here for quite a while and is a nice entrance towards better food choices at O'Hare. Located in the "C" concourse at C26; it ALWAYS has a line any time of day and the bar seating area is always packed any time of day.
Real meat (not processed), hand carved to order sandwiches (R.Beef, Ham, Turkey, Corned Beef). I've gotten a few co-workers hooked on this place and I personally only get their R.Beef on sourdough with Provolone, grilled Panini style. Delicious!
They offer 4 types of bread, 3 types of cheese (.80) and complimentary lettuce & tomato. Your choice of a cold sandwich or Panini style (run this direction...), you get to add the condiments out of tiny squeeze packets.
Price you ask??? For regular blokes it would be around $7.65 out the door; not bad for a fantastic sandwich that offers REAL meat and a good portion too.
O'Hare passengers, check this place out if you have a long wait between flights or want something tasty to bring onboard! -

One of my best layovers ever. In an airport as crazy, crowded and insane as O'Hare, this is the shining star. Apparently everyone else got the memo as this place was jam packed when I was there Thursday night.
This bar is hooked up to the actual cafe that serves sandwiches. This is slightly confusing at first but the bartender was nice enough to explain the "rules". If you are on the bar side, that's great....but you have to leave the bar to order food. The greatest part of this adventure is that the bartender offered to keep an eye on my stuff and as you pay for your food at the cafe/deli side, you can have them swipe your credit card and transfer that bill to the bar. Epic win. I recommend the roast beef sandwich. There was more beef on that sandwich than any carnivore possibly needs, but in an inebriated state, my heart couldn't say no.
The house Berghoff beers were pretty great. I had the Lager, the Amber, and my favorite by far, the Black. Now, in all of my beer drinking escapades and adventures I have never had a beer so dark in color but so light and rich in taste. Also, before I committed to a $5.75 draft (CHEAP FOR AIRPORTS!!), the bartender gave me a sample.
I was also more than happy that the bartender was able to give me a "plane soda" as I was already delayed and knew I would still have time to kill before the final leg of my journey.
Only two negatives to report. One, this place closes at 9:30 (I think)..anyway, it seemed early and I was not a fan. Two, they really need to kick people out for sitting at the bar with a book and not really drinking, just sitting there. There are plenty of places to sit and relax in that airport. Why anyone would want to go into a loud bar and read is beyond me. Also....seriously....these girls were in prime TV spots. Hello. it's college basketball season. Some of us are more excited for this than for Christmas. Don't go to a sports bar, take up prime real estate, and then look annoyed for being in a LOUD BAR.
Well done. Service, taste, atmosphere were across the board fantastic. I would spend a layover here anytime. -

Pretty good for an airport...the hand carved roasted turkey was delicious, unfortunately the dry 'fresh baked daily' bread it was on really took away from it. The reuben was quite good tho the corned beef was a bit fatty. But all in all, not bad for an airport. Its at the end of the C concourse, by gate C26.
Messy messy hands though, btw, the bathroom is by gate C20 ish :) -

As far as lunch goes while at O'Hare, nothing beats this place. $6.95 for a corned beef sandwich that is stacked high and carved right when you order is a great price in comparison to the other options at the airport. I work at the airport and consider myself lucky to have access to this place.
Besides the corned beef, there are a selection wrap, salads, and other sandwiches which are all great. One thing to look out for is the cost of sides and drinks because they carry the normal airport food price tag. Located in the "C" concourse by gate C26. -

Louisville, KY
My roast beef sandwich was bland, but it didn't make me sick, so that exceeded my expectations for an airport restaurant. The cashier was a little gruff (kind of reminded me of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi).
And the bottles of sparking water came with a twist-off metal cap that was hard to put back on--a strange choice as most people drinking them aren't putting them down at one sitting. -
Review from Lex C.
Irvine, CA
I got the turkey breast sandwich and my wife got the corned beef. They were both pretty good. I have to say that the turkey breast was more tender and much more juicy. If I had to do it all over again, I would have passed on the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese (save me $1.30) and just loaded it up with some mustard.
They have 5 beers on draft. Stella Atois, Miller Lite and 3 Berghoff house beers. I tried two of them. Yuck! At least the bartender swapped out my beers. Although, she did make me wait and was sort of ignoring me sending me a message like (ok, what does this high maintenance guy want now?). So I'm going to give them a decent review only because in the end I was able to switch out both the dark and lager and dinging them on the beer alone isn't fair because the food was still decent. The dark had barely no carbonation left and the lager tasted like they forgot to rinse out the pint glass.
Why don't I get a bottled beer you ask? I don't like bottled beer if I can avoid it. -

Berghoff Cafe... wow... I usually never expect too much with airport food, especially the price. But our gate was right next to it, and I could smell the food, and see people eating it. I looked at the price and while it was about $1.50 more expensive than outside, the food looked amazing.
And it sure as hell tasted amazing. I've got to say that was a great Reuben they made there. The sausage pizza was tasty too!
O'Hare, you have one redeeming quality. -

Long wait at the airport? Delayed flight, lay over? Sick of all the other horrible airport food?
I was incredibly lucky to be hinted off to this gem in O'Hare because this place has a great corned beef sandwich; instant 5 stars.
Their corned beef sandwich was really good. It certainly isn't that sandwich you get at your favorite neighborhood deli, but you will be very pleased. The carved corned beef is great! Sandwich and a bag of chips for about $10, drafts $5.75 and what appeared to be fairly priced and fairly poured cocktails. -

The reward for finding this place in a far corner of T1 is the fresh-sliced corned beef on rye with a slice of provolone. Have em throw it in the panini press for a quick grilling and everything comes together nicely. Add some brown mustard and it's worthy of a trek across the airport from whatever gate you're at.

For airport food, the Berghoff Cafe does it for me. During a layover, boyfriend and I stopped in and grabbed a couple of sandwiches. They carve the meat right in front of you pile it on! We shared the ham and the corned beef (got them both grilled). Both were delicious! The meat was moist and tender, and overall the sandwiches beat any fast food sandwich you can think of hands down. I would actually say the ham was my favorite. But the corned beef was awesome too, particularly since I am a fan of almost anything with kraut. Will definitely be stopping by again next time I find myself at O'Hare. Note--they also have a full bar.

I've been working at O'hare for almost 11 years and Berghoff Cafe has to be one of my favorite places to eat if I have the money and time to spend. Everytime I pass up the cafe it is always busy. I always have their turkey sandwich on an onion roll. It is one of the best turkey sandwiches you will buy. It is very surprising that such good quality food can be found in an airport.

Awesome breakfast. Fast. Fresh. Omlettes and breakfast sandwiches are made from scratch to your liking. The people are very friendly. This place is at ohare near gate c25. By far the best airport breakfast I've ever had. I recommend the western omlette wrap.

This has to be the best airport restaurant for a hot deli sandwich! Wow, I had there corned beef with sauerbraut and was impressed by the high quality and the delicious taste. Sitting is tight...seems the word is out that this is the place to go. It is way above normal airport food...in fact if there was one of these places near my home or work I would go regularly.

Review from Aileen B.
It's been a couple of years since I was at O'Hare airport, but I do remember being very pleased with the sandwich ordered at Berghoff. A little pricier than fast-food, but the portions are large enough to share, and the sandwich is definitely fresher in taste and lighter in calories than any you'd find at a fast-food venue.
