Review from Theresa W.
Vancouver, BC
This is my go-to place for jerky - everything they make is gold. When I'm headed back to the t-dot, I'll always bring a few pounds back for the relatives, and it gives me a good excuse to stop by and grab a pound or so for myself as well. :)
The place is fairly large for just a store front, but since it takes some time to package up the goods when you order, it's nice that you can wait indoors if there's a line up. Jerky is about $20 a pound and it's cash only. Variations include beef / pork and spicy / non spicy.
Which reminds me, I have to make a jerky run soon before I head home for the holidays! See you soon BKH! -

This place is hilarious. I am a jerky junkie so knew i had to check it out when I got word that it is some of "Vancouver's best jerky". I'll be the judge of that yo.
We almost walked right by because, well, it barely looks like an establishment. So let me just say, do NOT expect anything but jerky here. The store, is, well, uh, sparse. Nothing in there but walls, a floor, an ATM (presuming this was from when it was cash only) and a grill covered with flattened boxes. There is no display, no welcoming signage, and the smell, is suspect to say the least.
BUT! We are here for jerky not ambience. We asked to taste all 4 samples (beek/pork, regular/hot) and ended up with the beef regular cause the "hot" was literally just a sprinkling of powdered chili. The pork didn't taste enough of anything but the sweet flavouring for me so beef it is.
As jerky goes...it is a tad sweet for me. Think Indian candy...but beef. Really tasty but for me, just sweet with not enough smoke or flavour. Having said that i still bought half a pound.
If you're in the neighbourhood i definitely recommend popping in for a 1/4 lb or so. But personally, I've had better.Listed in: Meat please!

BKH makes really good pork and beef jerky. The taste and texture reminds me of the ones I tried in Hong Kong and Macau.
Everytime we receive a pack of BURNT PORK JERKY EDGES, it would be finished in an hour ^_^ Unfortunately I keep on forgeting to take a picture of the package, as I stuff my face with BURNT PORK JERKY EDGES.
BURNT PORK JERKY EDGES are really good and addictive!!!!

pretty consistent after all these years, and kinda amazing after all these years.
usually order the spicy version, the edges are the best ;)
no wonder they were on Dragon's Den! -
Review from Allen C.
Their jerky is so good that they went on national television to talk about it yesterday night. They were on CBC's Dragon's Den and they pitched their company so that their product may go nationwide. Well, I hate to share a good thing, but this single store deserves attention. They make the tastiest jerky in all of Vancouver and hopefully now they get a chance to prove it around the country and hopefully many more countries.
I had to go the day after to get a pound of spicy pork myself and they did not disappoint. The spice is not overwhelming and does not take away from any of the locked in pork flavour. I wish I could buy more but at $21/lb you should just savor each piece like it was your last. Very tasty snack, appy, or entree even!Listed in: Hush hush

Checking out the Fraser St 'hood.
Ok so this place is a bit of a dive looks wise. Reminds me of a pita bakery growing up. However, they have something else in common - their both freaking delicious and excel at their particular crafts.
Im used to dry as old boots jerky. In fact I like it. However this is moist and spicy (spicy pork) with a hint of sweetness. I also had the Beef and it too was fantastic.
To top it off the staff were exceptionally pleasant. At the end of it, I could care less how the building looks as long as both the product and people serving it are great. -

This place is strange and kinda sketchy, but they have hands-down the best jerky I've ever had in my life. I've tried the beef and pork, in regular and spicy. It's all delicious, but the spicy pork is incredible. It's the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, chewy, sticky, salty....*drool*
I first tried Bee Kim Heng's jerky at the Home and Garden Show. Their booth had no fancy signs or tablecloths - just two eager young men, and rows and rows of paper cups filled with jerky samples. They weren't located anywhere near the other food booths (I think they had a roofing manufacturer next to them), but my friend and I aren't shy about trying what might be potentially life-altering foodstuffs. I'm so glad I grabbed that little cup o' meat.
Here's how much I love this stuff: I actually tried to take 5 lbs of it to relatives in Australia, only to have it confiscated at customs. Whoops. (Aussie quarantine is super intense, yo. Don't make my mistake.) I told the customs lady that this jerky was worth risking her job over, and I wouldn't judge her if she slipped some into her purse. My hubby and I took a second to consider eating some of it right there at the quarantine counter. Oh yes, it's that good. -

"I hit Bee Kim Heng, at the bar, take a seat / I ordered the jerky, she said 'You are what you eat.'"
Wow - this place is a serious dive. I've walked into better appointed parking lots. 'Spartan' doesn't even begin to describe it - okay, hopes were high.
I must confess I'm a big jerky fan. But I actually prefer the the dry Jimmy's beef jerky over the moist/fatty Singaporean "Soo's" style. Jerky is something I associate with food you eat while driving on long road trips or on the computer. Oily fingers is not something you want.
Prices start at $10 per 1/2 pound and $20 a pound. The people in line before us was buying 10 lbs. of jerky - another checkmark. Someone recommended that I go for the spicy pork jerky.
As I said, if you don't like the idea of digging into a oily, cloudy vacuum-packed bag-o'-jerky - Bee Kim Heng is not for you. The spicy flavour was a pretty nice kick of heat. The pork jerky was tasty and still exhibited char marks. Nice. It was like eating some damn good roast pork -- but dryer and chewier.
But as Gersham pointed out - buying jerky by the pound is extremely dangerous. Especially for stuff this good. Watching some TV while eating some jerky meant I woke up in 3 hours later in a jerky haze.Listed in: East Van Eateries

Meat candy.
This place means business. With duck, pork and unknown meats hanging in the window you know this tiny little meat shop is the real deal.
When meat-guy chops, he does so with bare hands and chops so fast I worry he'll lose a finger. He doesn't though. All ten digits in tact. An everyday hero if you will.
BBQ duck and pork-- the treat of champions. Try it, you'll like it... unless you're a only veggie-friendly!Listed in: Kensington-Cedar Cottage: The…, Cheap Eats Baby!, Strictly Chinese, kingsway, MEAT!

If you want fresh beef jerky, this is the place to go. The shop looks like a hole in the wall, but the people that run this place are professional beef jerky experts!
It also makes a great gift because it's not easy to find this style of beef jerky and it can get pricey. Great, as I write this I have a huge craving for it. Beware, its addictive! -

This Jerky Joint (can't call it a restaurant and I like the sound of Jerky Joint) is a hole in the wall on Fraser.
It was described to me as "if crack cocaine were jerky then it'd be this". The lady behind the counter even gave me my first taste for free. Well, after taking a good strong hit I can attest to this. This stuff is bloody tasty.
Not too sweet, chewy and with a nice grilled meat flavour I suggest the pork over the beef. I found the beef a bit too dry, but the pork was nice and tender. Almost like a damn good tender maple bacon.
Only downside is that you have to buy it by the pound which is pretty excessive. It'll leave you sitting at home on your couch with sticky fingers, an empty plastic bag, a pound of fat/meat slurry in your belly, dazed in gluttony wondering where the day went. Don't say I didn't warn you. -

If you're a fan of beef jerky, you MUST try Bee Kim Heng!!
My favorite is the spicy beef jerky. If you go, make sure you call ahead. They only make so much a day and regardless of what time you go, there will be people lining up. At $10 a pack, it's so worth it.
It's really cute there because you always see old chinese people lining up to by $300 worth of jerky at a time, especially during Christmas time. Refer your granny there :) -

The best Bak Kuah I've tasted in a long time! Bak Kuah is the colloquial name for Singapore Pork Jerky. I happened to stumble on the review of Bee Kim Heng a while ago and made a point that if I made my way to Vancouver, I'd have to stop at this store. Boy, am I glad I ever did!
Authentic tasting Bak Kuah, not too sweet, just right. The black chargrilled marks on the jerky gives it that definitive taste and flavour that I remember.
Love that the lady up front at the store was grilling the pork.
That wonderful Bak Kuah smell fills the air when you walk into the store. When I purchased my pork jerky, the other lady vacuum-packed my pork jerky. Good for 2 months in the fridge, she said. I don't think it will last that long. Seriously. -

I go and stock up on beef/pork jerky from Bee Kim Heng every time I'm in Vancouver. My favourite is the spicy beef. They make the jerky fresh daily. If you are buying a large order, you can call ahead and they will have it all packed up for you. It's roughly around $20 for a pound of either beef or pork jerky. You can get it in half pound portions.
This is the best tasting beef jerky I've found in Canada. The jerky is Singaporean style. Unlike western-style beef jerky, it's no where as chewy/stringy or as salty. The beef/pork jerky from Bee Kim Heng is more tender, juicy, slightly sweet but savoury and more flavourful. After trying it for the first time, I could never go back to eating the Oberto stuff or even the stuff from Tillamook. -

It's not the best Singaporean jerky I've ever had, but it's the best I've had in Vancouver.
The store is a dive so don't expect anything grand. And when entering the store don't even look at the piles of boxes and debris piled to the right.
Head to the back part of the counter where you'll find the cash register to place your order. I bought spicy pork jerky and regular pork jerk which they freshly vacuum sealed. Price was $19 per pound which is what I would expect to pay.
This type of jerky can be made two ways, one uses minced meat and the other uses slices of meat. Bee Kim Heng uses slices of meat which I find adds more texture/chewiness and is less tender.
The flavor is spot-on delicious, slightly sweet. The jerky is nicely grilled which adds that special flavor you can only get in Singaporean style jerky.
I have two more jerky places to try this week but so far Bee Kim Heng is in the lead!Listed in: Singaporean Sweet Pork Jerky

Compared to the chain from Singapore w/ a similar name, I actually enjoyed this place more. Bear in mind, the inside is a no frills plain Jane kitchen w/ a grill and a hood. The paint on the wall and the tile on the floor are all very dated. That being said, this place is strictly for perfect beef/pork jerky at a very reasonable price per pound. The amazing part, I have visited this place since 2002 and each time, they have not let me down. I always end up buying 20-30 lbs of jerky back to the U.S. to pass out as gifts to friends/family.

It is really hard to find good pork jerky on this side of the continent. I am born and raised in Malaysia and we love our pork jerky especially during Chinese New Year. They are tender, sweet and has a distinct smoky flavor. Bee Kim Heng makes them just the way it should taste. If you are lucky, you might be able to see them grill next to the counter. This place looks a little dingy and sells nothing but jerky. They used to sell drinks and spice mix in the other corner of the shop but not anymore. But don't let the appearance put you off. The pork jerky is probably the best $20 you would spend in Vancouver. It's CASH ONLY though.

Every time I'd come up to Vancouver, this is definitely one of the places I go to to get some delicious and fresh pork jerky. They have beef and pork jerky, which comes in spicy and non-spicy. I prefer pork jerky over beef jerky. They pack them when you order them, so it's freshly sealed.
