    All hail the Bee Bell.

If you're going to buy baked goods on the southside, this is your one and only destination. They run the whole bakery gamut: breads, cakes, squares, tarts, pies, cookies, sweet and savoury.  It's all baked fresh daily and sold out daily. Come early for the best selection and aromas.  They also have really good espresso now.

If you really like someone, unique to the Bee Bell is their combo birthday cake which is half chocolate and half vanilla with a strawberry jam layer ... it is bliss.  The cake is moist and substantial without being heavy.  I really do only buy this for people I really like.

When you come in, immediately grab a number from the dispenser on the left side of the doorway.  The place is usually packed, but service moves quickly.  The ladies at the counter and in the bakery are all friendly and helpful.  Everyone seems to enjoy working there and they probably got there at 04:00 or earlier.

Whether it's a pain au chocolat with espresso or a three tier wedding cake, it's hard to think of a better place to go to.

The word "Health" in its name refers to the fact that they don't use preservatives or any artificial junk in their baking. There is still assuredly lots of sugar, butter, and other natural goodies that make baked goods wonderful.

And as I'm new to Edmonton, I've only tried three things here:

    1) A free sample Danish part - delicious and flaky - a good quality bakery danish.
    2) The baguette - denser and less crusty than the Baguette at Bonjour Bakery (which is still called Tree Stone here on Yelp), but  superior to any supermarket baguette.
    3) The bagels - Well, these were more like buns than actual bagels. They were missing the outward shine, and the texture was off as well. They reminded me of the bagels at Safeway. Oh well.

I look forward to trying more goodies from Bee Bell and upgrading my review once the bad impression from the bagels wears off.

I guess I am not the only one to think this place is pretty awesome!  Had a friend move into the neighborhood recently and he introduced me to this bakery!  The food is fresh and delicious and the smell that greats you at the door makes your mouth water.  They usually have a very large selection so it can be difficult to decide which fabulous treat to try.  Their cinnamon buns and danishes are to die for and the wide variety of colourful cupcakes, cakes, and pies are extremely tempting.  Seems like it can get pretty busy here so you may have to wait in line for a bit but I think it is definitely worth the wait.  Perfect way to start a nice weekend morning with a visit to Bee Bell and a walk down Whyte Ave!

Ok, so I know Bee Bell has some sort of cult following around these parts, and it seems everyone but me (and my wife) thinks Bee Bell has such delicious everything but I just don't see it. Or more to the point, I don't taste it.

I've had a few things from here... a big chocolate cake with big, beautiful chocolate shavings, a gorgeous looking strawberry pie, and if I recall correctly I had a couple different scones too.

They all tasted the same to me, which is to say they tasted like nothing. I mean flavourless. No exaggeration, even the chocolate shavings we took off and tasted on their own... nothing.  In fact, I was so amazed by this de-flavouring that I often can't sleep at night wondering exactly how they manage to extract every drop of taste and yet leave the specimen looking worthy of display at an art gallery.

But speaking of the visual, this is where Bee Bell really excels in my opinion. Their stuff looks a 10 out of 10. I mean really, really amazing. Even though I very much disliked the first cake we got there years ago, I have bought things since just because they look so darn good, only to be disappointed again.

To be honest, If i was rating strictly on what I have tasted myself I would probably have chosen 1 star, but since I haven't tried any of the bread I felt it would be unfair to do so.

Yes its that good. My grandma worked here for like 25 years, nothing like getting fresh danishes. The owner is super friendly, he even attended my bros wedding. The blackforest cake is hoe blackforest cake is suppose to be,not that crud from safeway. I even work for a restaurant and we buy our buns from here. I am european and this is my pastry headquarters. LOVE IT

Beeeeee-bell is so gooood! :-).  They've got it all ..... from brownies to wedding cakes, german ryes to multigrain bagels, cupcakes to fruitcakes, a variety of pies, cookies, muffins, pastries and more!  The best part is...  you can buy a tasty and healthy loaf of bread for $3 or less!  It's truly a great find and is among those places in Old Strathcona that keeps its name going.

Although I do like this bakery a lot, I feel that many of the breads seem very processed, like as if they were from the supermarket.  But, having said that, they still do have a nice variety of breads

Everyone needs to go to Bee Bell Bakery! And I mean EVERYONE!

They have amazing quality everything! The items you buy from this bakery will be more expensive than elsewhere but absolutely nothing can compare to the quality of food you will get from Bee Bell Bakery. It is worth every single penny!

My only complaint about Bee Bell is that they don't have long enough hours. I would love to be able to have the option of grabbing a muffin or a scone from Bee Bell on a Sunday afternoon but they are closed Sundays. It breaks my heart. No really, it does. And it's hard to get there before they close on a weeknight (unless you don't work).  Here are their hours:

    Monday to Friday: 9:00am - 5:30pm
    Saturday: 8:00am - 5:30pm
    Sunday: Closed

My advice, if you're entertaining guests - the strawberry tarts here are to die for. They are so delicious that they should be illegal! Thankfully they aren't though.

This is the best bakery in the city and it is the best bakery I have ever been to. I have never had something from Bee Bell that I didn't love!

I come to this bakery a lot to satisfy my sweet tooth. They've got a variety of pies and quiches that just make me drool as I walk in. I recommend the peach pie, as it's my favorite -- light and fluffy on the inside, flaky on the outside, just how it should be!

If you're not one to pay full price for something, go near their closing time, around 4-5pm. Some of their items should be half price by then. But honestly, its best to go when everything is fresh. They are closed Sundays, so that only leaves Saturday mornings. The only thing about that is, everyone else will be there too -- Saturday mornings are their busiest time, so be sure to take a number!

Their buns are usually a good deal too. You can get different varieties like Swiss and sourdough in bags of 6 for about $2.50 to $3.50. If you can't wait to stuff your face with fresh baked treats, they have a seating area outside.

This bakery is truly a treasure! I smelled something yummy on my way to Bikram Yoga one morning and decided to follow my nose and I ended up at Bee Bell across the street. I was drawn in by the sweet smell of baked bread and desserts, but what made me stay was the fact that the vast majority of their items are health conscious. I decided to sample a few items--ok a few too many items--as I bought some to take home in order to share my great find.

Their cakes and bars were delicious! Far to delicious to be healthy, but if they are saying it then I'm going with it! We both polished off all I brought home and decided that this would be a definite stop whenever we are in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I'm not in the neighborhood very often anymore, but I do still go for the occasional drive down to Bee Bell as it is just too irresistible. Watch their hours though before you go, they are not open as often as I would like.

I love this place!! I have gone to this bakery since I moved to Edmonton and I still have not tired of their French Tarts. You can really taste the reduced amount of sugar in their baked goods. If you were to get these icing laden baked goods from any other non-health bakery the sweetness would be overwhelming and enough to make all your teeth hurt. The icing here is thick and delicious and at the perfect sweetness level. It satisfies your sweet tooth and doesn't make you feel extremely guilty about indulging in a treat.
If you get there early in the morning everything is fresh and the bakery smells amazing. The prices is good if you get their items directly from the bakery, if you buy them from places that carry their items, such as second cup, expect to pay a little more.

Other delicious items include pies, fresh fruit tarts filled with cream, strudels, a variety of bread and buns, custom cakes, and quiches.

Not sure I understand the healthy part.

++ Lots of variety: pastries, danishes, sticky buns.
    ++ Good place for breakfast.
++ Nice sitting area to enjoy the outdoors (summer months only)

Didn't try any of the non-breakfast baked goods.

Bee-Bell is a bakery that uses healthy ingredients to create muffins, pastries, and buns that are nutritious and delicious. You may already be familiar with some of what Bee-Bell has to offer, as they provide muffins and other treats to several of the Second Cup coffee shops in Edmonton. I really like the muffins - they are firm on the outside, have huge tops, and are soft on the inside, with plenty of flavour and fillings. Try the chocolate zuchini for a very rich experience. Seriously, a lot of muffins I try are cake wannabes -- these muffins are almost a meal in themselves.

Bee-Bell is located on the south side and worth the trek if you don't live nearby. It gets very busy on Saturdays, as Lauren points out, and closes by five on weekdays, so you should come prepared to wait in line if Saturday is the only day you can make it. It is a very lovely atmosphere, both in looks and smell, so hanging around there for a while is certainly not the worst thing in the world.

Bee Bell Health Bakery has the worst hours of operation. I've come here so many times anticipating a sweet treat, only to be faced with a dim bakery that is obviously closed.

When this bakery is open though, it's quite a treat for your mouth and your eyes. They have so many delicious items in their displays, that I often end up buying a lot more than I should. To be quite honest with you though, I'm not really sure how healthy most of their products are--they are much too delicious to be healthy.

I especially like the pies and the muffins here. The muffins are really big and quite heavy, but they taste very good--blueberry or chocolate chip is the best.

They also sell dairy-free cakes here (very tasty) and one kind of gluten-free bread (not the greatest).

There is something about the smell of Bee Bell Bakery that stirs up memories of my childhood. I remember going to Bee Bell when I was much younger and having treats like cookies and wonderful cakes.

From baguettes to pastries, this bakery has it all. And apparently it is now good for you too? I have a hard time believing that all these delicious treats and breads are healthy for you, but I am going to let myself believe it just so I can enjoy Bee Bell Bakery.

I don't find the prices to be much more than a regular supermarket, but the quality is much better.

I love the amount of information they have on their website too. They have recipes you can view using some of their products and you can also take a look at everything they have to offer. The pictures are drool worthy and they even have all the prices posted. Super helpful!

I remember going to Bee-Bell with my mom as a kid, and while they've changed locations, the quality is still top-notch. I love their cheese buns, sausage rolls, cinnamon buns, cheese bread, apple turnovers, and many, many other things. You have to watch yourself here, as it's very, very easy to walk away with way more than you intended on getting, especially because everything looks delicious. There's also a lady that works there that keeps suggesting things to buy, and I usually end up taking her advice. Every time I see her there I know I'll be buying a lot.

Yes, Bee Bell is definitely one of Edmonton's gems. I have been to this bakery only two or three times because their hours of operation are extremely inconvenient, and every single time I walked out with bags full of baked goodies. Everything in the store looks mouth-watering and extremely hard to resist. For sale there are different kinds of bread (I buy the multigrain one most often), bagels, muffins, scones and buns (cinnamon ones are to die for!). Cakes, cookies, pies and tarts are especially hard to resist. Good thing that Bee Bell is a health bakery that uses reduced amounts of sugar and no artificial additives in their products, otherwise indulging in the consumption of the aforementioned treats would be too dangerous and fattening: ) Some of my favourite sweet treats from Bee Bell are blueberry and pecan tarts and chocolate éclairs. Actually, whatever you choose to order won't disappoint you. All desserts are delicious and decadent.
As previous reviewers have mentioned, choose the time to come here very carefully. Bee Bell closes at 4 pm, and by that time most goodies are most likely to be sold out. Early during the week or on the Saturday is the safest bet.
