This place really doesn't need another raving review, but a part of me hopes that they will read this, for one simple reason, lamb bacon! I will never forget having this, it was one of the most amazing taste's I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Please serve it again...so good.

Most recently we came here for just deserts, as has become the habit among my group of friends, we went to our second restaurant for the night. We called them from our first restaurant, and they were happy to accomodate all five of us at 9:30pm. They also didn't have any problem that we were casually dressed, but the other patrons were definitely more dressed up than us. They had six deserts on their menu, and so we ordered each desert, and had a round of passing them along so we could all have a try of each. They were all great, and as the menu changes quite frequently I won't mention their names.

All in all, this a place with great atmosphere, outstanding service, it's expensive but definitely worth while for special occasions, once or twice a year.

Beckta's a very nice spot. You'll find more to like if someone else is paying. This is standard, high-quality food executed well. You should not expect to be blown away or surprised; you will merely be very impressed that everything is cooked properly and seasoned appropriately.

You'll do better eating dessert elsewhere. Some high-end restaurants focus too much on dessert. Others go in the opposite direction, with middling and overpriced results. Beckta is one of the "others."

I've been to Ottawa a few times now and my wife finally managed to join for one of my trips. We wanted something nice and romantic, and a good friend suggested we check out Beckta. I'm thrilled we did.

The first thing that's worth highlighting is the service. It was absolutely impeccable from start to finish. It seemed that every time we needed something, our waiter or someone else was right there ready to assist. Even at the end of the night, when I find that service tends to fall off (I hate having to wait for my check), they were still right there.

It started out perfectly after we were seated and ordered our cocktails - a take on a margarita for my wife, and an old fashioned made with scotch for me. Non-traditional, but still very good. We decided to go with the tasting menu (the main reason we came here). After we told the waiter this, he said, "OK - I'll give you guys 5-10 minutes to enjoy your cocktails, and I'll send over some bread so you won't go hungry in the mean time."

Let me opine for just a second here. I've done a handful of tasting menus at different restaurants, and one thing that I've found nearly universally is the first wine and food pairing is on the table nearly instantaneously. If you ordered a cocktail beforehand, you're suddenly double-fisting and not able to enjoy your cocktail before easing into dinner. When the waiter said he'd give us time to enjoy our cocktails, it was a "You had me at hello" moment.

    Back to the dinner.

The first course was a smoked trout with fingerling potatoes, paired with a very nice little white wine. Awesome presentation, and very tasty. The second course was absolutely the winner - eggs benedict.

Yes - breakfast for dinner. But this was no typical eggs benedict. This was a homemade english muffin, with a light schmear of liver pate, lamb bacon (yes - lamb bacon FTW!), and a tempura egg yolk. All covered with an amazing hollandaise and paired with a nice bubbly rose (which I did in fact drink with my pinky in the air). It was by far the winner of the night.

The third course was a quail leg on a bed of sweet potato(?) puree paired with a pinot - very tasty. The final savory dish was a bison steak, done up rare, sliced on the bias, that was just melt in your mouth good, and paired with a hearty cab that was just perfect.

Dessert was a "tropical cubist movement", featuring 5 different desserts that were all shaped as squares. All were very tasty, but I don't know that there was anything that really was "change your life" good.

Yes, it's pricey. But for the food, the service, the atmosphere and the experience it was worth every penny. Next time I get my wife back to Ottawa, I can assure you we'll be back.

This is still my "go to" spot for a guaranteed great meal and stellar service.  It will cost you (entres are $35 to $40) but it's great for special occasion.

As to the wine, their list is great and there are affordable options.  I've heard they allow you to bring your own wine for a fee on Monday nights so I have to check that out soon.

Back in Ottawa and I couldn't miss a return visit to Beckta.

My colleague and I shared an appetizer of lemon ricotta gnudi   What in the world are gnudi?   They were a  pasta filled with ricotta accompanied by a  sauce of  mushrooms, Jerusalem artichokes sprouts, parmesan and fried sage.  Yes, fried sage.

for the main course I had the same magret of duck that I enjoyed so much last time. It came with -- I am copying from the menu -- spaetzle "stuffing", roasted turnips, snow peas, sauerkraut that wasn't like any sauerkraut I've ever had before, and cranberry ginger chutney.  Holy cow!  It was so good I can't even remember if I had dessert .

Lisa, our waiter, was excellent:  good suggestions, attentive without being intrusive.  The malbec she suggested was excellent.

If you are a in search of a great meal in an elegant yet unpretentious setting, try Beckta.  It's no wonder it has won so many awards.

I've had a chance to go to Beckta many times during my time in Ottawa and time and time again, it's been a memorable experience.  Every time I go to Beckta I try something new or some variation of something old and I've never been disappointed.  The seafood, duck, steak, tenderloin has always been great!!!

One of the things that was a huge surprise was how much I loved the deserts there.  One of the most memorable deserts I've had at any restaurants I've been to has been a strawberry shortcake.  I've always hoped I'd see it back on the menu.

Between the food, the wine,  the nice atmosphere and the amazing service, this restaurant is tops in Ottawa in my book.

This is one of a few restaurants I would go back to in a heartbeat whenever asked.

Beckta is one of Ottawa's premier dining venues, and enjoys a wonderful reputation. However, being a sometimes guest it pains me to inform you that the standard they hold - in terms of food - is sliding.

During the reign of the previous head chef, it would be hard to order any dish that seemed off the mark, and very rarely would you get a "miss". It is on his reign that the reputation was earned, and deservedly so. But as it currently stands,
a bit of focus is in order to get back to par.

On my most recent venture to Beckta, out of all our dishes - including one extra "shareable" appetizer., only the veal sweetbreads were memorable. The other apps., mains and desserts were all judged to be "O.K." but for the type of establishment, one expects more.
Especially in light of past successes.

The interior is very well appointed, which lends itself well for a smart dinner with friends or an intimate affair. The staff are well trained and failrly knowledgeable. Our server was a little overly casual and was very handsy i.e. overly animated when speaking with his hands, but when I was brought the wrong dish, he compensated for the delay by topping up our wine glasses.

For the serivce and environs, 4/5. for the food, 3.5/5.
Appetizers gererally shouldn't outshine main courses.

Note: My rating reflects my judgement of value of experience vs. $$ spent. It's still a great place to go, but at the moment I am not drawn here for what's on the menu.

For a while, Beckta's was recognized as not only one of the best restaurants in Ottawa, but also among the best in the country and I've been a number of times, having the tasting menu every time (with wine pairings once).

The first time I went was a few years ago, with their original and celebrated chef whose name escapes me right now (he went to Whalebone, then another stint somewhere then went back home in Eastern Canada).  Back then the food was indeed worth all the praise, very original food, modern but not just flash for the sake of it (foam this and mousse that), every dish in the tasting menus were great to amazing.  But on more recent visits, the originality and taste of the dishes have begun to slip and isn't what it used to be.

The service was and still is very attentive, they have the barely there but always there service nailed.  Things like folding your napkin back on your table every time you step away, etc.  They also don't try to upsell or push things, which is what you'd expect in this caliber of restaurant.

Overall it's still one of Ottawa's finer restaurants, just not sure it's "the best" anymore.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Beckta.  I attended for the first time, and had the escargots appetizer, the bison main and the chocolate variety for desert. Each serving was fantastic.  My party also enjoyed all of their dishes, with no complaints.  The service was amazing - unobtrusive and courteous.  I would highly advise giving it a try!
