Due to the fact that I despise the TTC and it's utter lack of serviceability, also due to the fact that I'm Little Miss Last Minute, Beck Taxi is my knight in shining (and sometimes smelly) orange & green armour.  Yes, yes it is costly, but when time and accessibility are not at your disposal you must pay dearly for convenience.

I noticed that if you call Beck often enough they start to remember the places that you need to be picked up from, or are going to.  Heck, I use Beck so much that we're on a first name basis.  Due to my numerous cross city trips, I've been disposed to a lot of  conversations with cabbies, but it's all good. Some drivers (especially from the other cab companies) outright ignore you as they are more engaged in their personal hands-free conversations that seem to start and end with the word "Acha cha" a lot...but I'm happy to say most of my experiences with Beck drivers have been very good.  My heart goes out to the cabbies as it can't be fun driving around with a different stranger numerous times a day that's automatically copping backseat driver attitude.

Beck is also a great referral service under the roof of a car.  I've had recommendations for restaurants, referrals for naturopaths and one awesome cabbie even wrote me up a recipe for a wicked mango chutney on the back of a Beck receipt! I've even used Beck taxi as a courier service and depending on what you're sending, and the distance covered it'll run you about $20 and up.

If you're vehicle-less and need to get from point A to point B rapidly and want service that is comparatively better than the others, Beck Taxi is the cab company of choice.

Beck Taxis Driver Broke My 80 Year Old Mothers Walker And Will Not Reimburse Her For the $35.00 That She Had To Pay For Out Of Her Own Pocket In Order To Get It Fixed!
    ************************************************** **********************************
My 80 year old mother had a horrible experience with one of Beck Taxis Cab Drivers.

The man violently handled her walker incorrectly and threw it in his trunk and broke it.  When my mother complained to the driver about it, he lied to her stating that it was already broken to cover himself and wrongdoings up!

Furthermore, I did write a complaint letter to Ghazala K, who runs the company and this person has taken No Responsibility for it and all this person does is refer it to Barb at their company who handles the Wheeltrans department who did Absolutely Nothing about it!

This damn company is irresponsible, selfish, cheap and dishonest and Nobody should ever use their services anymore!

Here is a copy of my complaint letter that my sister, who is a key witness for the damage caused by Becks Taxi Driver who helped write this letter which is now being presented for your review, along with Beck Taxis only response letter that I had ever received from them and weeks later, there is still No Resolution to give my mother back her $35.00!

    Hi Howard:

there is a problem you can help Mom with if you want.

On May 7th at 4:00 Wheeltrans sent mom a Beck cab  http://www.becktaxi.co... to pick her and her walker up from the Doctors at 1333 Shephard Ave.

the Taxi driver put (threw) mom's walker in the trunk on top of another walker.

When mom got out of the cab and the driver gave her the walker, the back strap was broken.  It had snaped apart when he threw the walker into the trunk of the cab.

Mom needed to get the walker repaired right away - she cannot function without it.  So I took her to Shoppers Health Care and they repaired it for $35.00 and tax.

When she called Wheel Trans about getting reimbursed, they told her she would have to deal with Beck.

When she called Beck, they tried to tell her the walker was already broken when it went into the trunk of the the taxi.

this is totally Untrue.  Mom would not go out with a broken walker.  She Could Not go out with a broken walker.  She needs to sit on the walker and she needs the strap there for support or she would fall back onto the ground.

    Do what you can....

    Lor

p.s.  Mom's having alot of problems peeing.  She will need bladder surgery I am afraid.

    DEAR GHAZALA K:

IT IS EASY TO BE CHEAP AND SELFISH ABOUT THIS WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS AND BLAME OTHER COMPANIES FOR YOUR EMPLOYEE`S DAMN MISTAKES, BUT...

IF MY MOTHER DOES NOT GET HER $35.00 REIMBURSEMENT FROM BECK, YOUR COMPANY THAT YOU OWN,

I WILL PUBLISH YOUR NAME AND HOW YOU TREATED MY MOTHER AND OTHER INFORMATION ON A VERY FAMOUS WORLDWIDE WEBSITE TO LET TORONTO CITIZENS KNOW HOW YOUR COMPANY TREATS THEIR CUSTOMERS.

DO YOU WANT TO TRY ME?

YOU ARE NOT PLAYING WITH A CHILD HERE.

AS SOON AS MY SISTER TELLS ME TO PUBLISH THE NEGATIVE COMMENT AND REVIEW ABOUT YOU AND BARB, I WILL DO SO.

IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.

I WOULD DO IT NOW, BUT MY SISTER HAS NOT GIVEN ME THE OKAY TO DO SO YET.

BUT I AM SURE SHE WILL VERY SOON.

It's difficult to review a cab company, because I have a general disdain for all cabs and how they run in Toronto.

Yet, if I have to choose, I would choose Becks, over any of those other ones.
I find them reliable and the cars nicer, cleaner. They also are more available.

But here starts my rant about cabs in Toronto
I think a lot more people would use cabs as their mode of transportation if it wasn't highway robbery. $4.25 to just sit down? And no additional mileage included in this? It's just a rip off.
Although, because of this, less and less I find that cabbies would not reject you, even if you were going a small distance (then again, I could be wrong).

I went from the Metro Convention Centre to the CNE the other day, and it was $11.50. Am I still obligated to give tip?
I did ask before I got in, if he would take credit card. He took forever to get that machine started, and it asks me for tip.
I don't see a reason for it, because isn't that what the $4.25 was for? No other cabs in the world (NYC, anywhere in Asia) expect this.

General advice, if you're travelling long distances, it's nauseating. You're better off cabbing to the nearest subway, and taking it from there. You'll feel better, and it's actually cheaper.

I forgot it was possible to get good back to back cab rides anymore living in Ottawa but another cab ride with Beck and another fun time!

I had to take a cab a few weeks ago as I was running late.  The cab driver said no problem and took some awesome routes in and around town to avoid the Santa Clause parade.  During this cab ride he told me all the ins and outs of cabbies and some of his stories.  I'm pretty sure I was almost in tears with some of the hilarity and shenanigans!  He got me to my destination in record time and thanked him profusely.

Last night with a bunch of luggage in tow, I hailed down a cabbie and he helped me grab my heavy bag and toss it into the trunk of the car.  He asked me how the temperature of the car was, what radio station I wanted to listen to and what route I wanted to take!  AWESOME!  We turned on a station I hadn't heard in awhile and had a cool conversation about Toronto on the drive back.   I'm not sure how  it happened but part way into the cab ride we both started singing one of the songs and started laughing our asses off.  He got me to my destination in no time and helped me out with my luggage again!

Vastly different from my Ottawa cab ride yesterday were the driver popped the trunk and sat in the car for me to put my bags in.  When I sat down he immediately dialed someone on his cell and talked at a tone in which if I was on the phone I'm sure he'd given me crap or asked me to stop and talked the whole ride to my destination.  Popped the trunk at my destination and sat there.  You suck blue line.

I find that Beck is generally pretty reliable, but they seem to be totally unmonitored when it comes to breaking taxi rules.  For example, they always want to know where you're going before you get in the car so if it's not far enough they can come up with some excuse not to take you.

Case in point last night outside the ACC after the Leafs game.  Driver standing outside his car says he's waiting for someone, but then proceeds to ask where my colleague is going.  I say Yonge and York Mills and suddenly he can get a ride with that driver.  Obviously if he'd said Bay and Dundas the driver would still be waiting for that other phantom person.  The key is to get in the cab before you tell them where you are going (although this wouldn't have worked in the ACC situation).

I also find they get pissed off when you want to pay with a credit card.  I find the solution to that is not to tell them how you're going to pay until you get there.  Then they have no choice in the matter.

The point is they are not allowed to turn down a fare and I shouldn't have to resort to these tactics.

Care for an anecdote? Hell yes! One time I was going to meet my friend Debra, but --through nobody's fault but my own-- I got mired in a lost cause of a conversation with this nightmare hippie girl by the side of the road. I made up an excuse that this girl that I know was choking on hotwax (or something) , and set to steal my body home in a cab. Now, I can't call one because my cellphone's dead, but luckily there was a black and white coming round the bend. It smelled like nicotine and gravy, not that I was expecting peaches and cream or anything, but the driver was going 1000BPM and it was giving me nausea. We took a ramshackle route, and I seriously thought this would be my farewell ride while shitty elevator music played on the radio. I remember thinking, I should make an emergency exit. This derelict cab driver is going to kill us. Is this soul suckin' jerk fuckin' with my head? But at the end of the day, that's what cabs are like in Toronto. "It's all in your mind," I told myself and lost myself in the static of the radio and the strange apparitions in the window. When I got home, I was inside out and spouting profanity prayers. And he gave me a hassle about using debit.

Lord only knows I could be already dead by now. That's why I rely on Beck from now on.

Obligatory Title Pun: At your BECK and call.

    Menu Readability: No complaints.

Need to mention: They take debit and credit and appreciate when you call ahead.

What this place teaches me about myself: I am a fan of the music of Beck Hansen. Did you notice?

The worst taxi experience ever. Will never ever use them again. I had just moved to Toronto and had more than usual luggage. To move from my temp place I called a cab from beck and let him know I had to make multiple trips. Basically I was all by myself and had to bring down a guitar, and 4 heavy suitcases and some bags from shopping I had done. The driver tells me he has to turn meter on because he has to wait while i make multiple trips up 4 floors to bring everything. I say fair enough, no problem. I can respect the value of his time, and would not take advantage of it.

But then he starts getting impatient and keeps asking how much more I have got and starts to basically harass and abuse me about making him wait there... Even though he is getting paid for it, and he is watching me struggle carry all this stuff from four flights of stairs, as if I am having a great time doing this myself. It got to the point that I was getting extremely anxious about the safety of my belongings, half of which were still up in the room, and the other half in this mentally unstable moron's taxi.

Finally, after 10 minutes of scrambling, everything was in the car, and we left.  But no, his insanity didn't stop there... He had the audacity to give me s**t about it the entire way driving to the destination as well. Never ever again will I call this company.

Maybe I shouldn't be writing this review based on one bad experience but whatever, you'll be the one to judge.

So I took the cab from broadview station to the westin, the ride was about average for most of the way, guy was quiet and drove. I had a funny feeling though.

as we got to the westin, I asked him to pull up on the other side of the street, he said ok and seemed to understand but continued to drive for about 4 blocks to the  harborfront community center. At this point I asked if he was going to turn around (or maybe he was just going to keep driving until we hit vancouver?) so he asked "make a U-turn here?" um, yeah or you could have just let me cross the fucking street by myself instead of driving around like a clueless idiot for an extra 20 minutes.

he clearly knew that I wanted to get off at the hotel, I told him about 3 times, he SAW the hotel and I asked him to leave me on the other side of the street, I don't get how he could have misunderstood that.

So eventually I ended up in the other side of the street and my bill was $28 dollars, I paid him $25 and tipped him with a cold stare. Really though I should've given him $20

Perhaps I should have noticed sooner, but I have never driven a car in my life and especially not on queens quay, I assumed that it is a bitch to make a U-turn on this street.

on the way home I took the royal taxi, it cost $19 and drove me a few blocks further to my house, I'm going to avoid beck unless they are the only ones there, I'm sure their drivers arent all incompetent morons, but this has left its mark on me.

I guess when you see orange, you know it will be "OK".  It's hard to review this place since each experience is different based on the driver.  Each driver will clean his car differently, smell different, drive different.  At least with Beck I know it will usually be ok.  From what I can remember from my 3 am adventures is that Orange is usually a more pleasant experience than the "smaller"guys.

The last few times I've called ahead to request a cab that takes anything other than cash, one has appeared at my doorstep with such frightening punctuality that I've been caught pantless or with a toothbrush still in my mouth. I now know not to call them until I'm 100% ready to bust out the door.

Either there's a taxi depot that I didn't know about in my backyard or these guys have me pegged and have a driver circling the area at all times with the knowledge that the rush hour TTC around here is about as reliable as your former employer's payroll department at mailing you your T4s before deadline (ie: NOT).

    Kudos.

Whoa, I never even thought to ask a taxi driver about after-hours bars, but we were in the backseat loudly discussing whether W would still be open and whether any of us knew exactly where it was, and the driver said very coolly, "Yeah, they're open, I can take you there."  Cab drivers know everything!

(We had to make a stop at someone's house first, and he even gave us his card so we could call him to take us there when we decided to go--awesome!)
