I was visiting Ottawa from Toronto and I was eager try beavertails after reading amazing reviews on yelp. I did try them at CNE once but this was a whole different experience. We went to the one that was in the Conferation Park where Winterlude was happening. It was around 9pm on Sunday night and there was a long line up despite such cold weather! I tried the one with cinnamon, sugar, and lemon and it was mm mmm good. I was surprised how light, fluffy it was with perfect bit of tang to each bite that just melts on your tongue.
Their apple cider was really good too, gotta have 'em together! Worth all the wait in the cold.
I wish they had beavertails in Toronto! -

The original - the best! It kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.
Every time I visit Ottawa I make a special trip to this Beavertails Canada location. The location is great - right in the centre of the Byward Market and the smell of the fresh Beavertails gets me EVERY TIME!
I suggest the original (Sugar and Cinimmon) or the Killaleo Sunrise, but I like my Beavertail to be simple. They have an flavor to tickle your taste buds.
If you're new to Canada or just visiting - you have to try one. They have locations all across the country and even the world - but the best is this location.

My girlfriend usually has to drag me to get a Beavertail in Toronto, whether it's at the Ex or some event at Nathan Phillips Square. I usually get one, never understanding what people love so much about this place. Growing up Italian, fried dough with Nutella on top was a regular treat, not a novelty that warrants a trip to Ottawa.
Still, I had to try it myself in Ottawa to correctly judge if there was any difference. I don't know what it was, but there is.
I really enjoyed it this time. Sure, most of the Nutella ended up on my cheeks, thoroughly embarrassing my girlfriend, but it was so tasty. My mouth is watering thinking about it right now.
The line-up wasn't nearly as long as it gets at the Ex, but the in & out service was similar. You don't get much time to decide. Just pick what you want and move aside.
Still, it was great. I wish I could go back now. -

I have to disagree with Erin as a newbie to Canada and Ottawa. First off, as the Ottawa Citizen recently reported, they were invented by an American couple. Secondly, they are not bad but as a local specialty food many cities have much better offerings - Montreal has its smoked meat and Chicago where I am from has its Italian beef.
A seasoned piece of fried dough just does not complete. -

While this treat is truly one of a kind no matter where you have it, to get it at its best you should get on on the canal, in the cold. Beavertail toppings range from the savoury to the sweet. My personal fav is the Kilalloe Sunrise - sugar, lemon and cinnamon. Yum!

woohoo! i am the first one to review this place!! this place is supposedly a canadian favorite for fried whole wheat dough that is stretched out to look like a beavertail (why?) and then topped w/ your choice of spreads, such as cinnamon and sugar, chocolate, etc. we got the nutella topping, and it was delicious. it comes out all warm and gooey and just melts in your mouth. yum!
