Review from Amy H.
Toronto, ON
I bought a Groupon for 6 laser hair removal sessions and used my first one this past week. Thankfully, I've used laser hair removal before and knew what to expect; otherwise, had this been my first and only experience, I'd have run for the hills and not returned.
This "spa" is essentially a tanning salon that offers laser hair removal services. The jarring odour of charred flesh greets you as you try to find the reception desk, which seems oddly hidden amongst the tanning beds. When the teenaged or early-20s receptionist greeted me, she handed me a clipboard with a 2-page waiver form that was rife with spelling errors and told me to fill it out while I waited for my "technician".
Three times throughout the waiver form, I was instructed to initial that I had been fully briefed on the technology, how it works, what to expect, and that there are possible negative consequences from using laser hair removal like, permanent scarring or blistering or burning. Um ... the only thing anyone mentioned to me upon entering this establishment was to fill out the form..?
When my "technician" appeared, wearing her Clinique counter style "lab coat", she yakked to the receptionist for a bit, then smiled at me and asked me to follow her. When I said, "Hi, how are you?" she replied with, "SORE! OMG, I did such a hard workout yesterday and now I am so sore!" I followed her into a room with the laser machine and a chaise for me to lay on, and looked for a hook or a chair upon which to lay my purse down. She pointed to a chair with a purse already on it and said, "Oh, just chuck your purse down with mine." Okaaaay.
I asked her about the possible negative consequences that were listed on the waiver form:
"So, how do you know whether a person's skin will take the laser well, or is more likely to scar or cause blistering?" I asked
"Oh, don't worry. You're not Black or Indian. You'll be fine. Here, put these on" and she handed me a pair of large sunglasses, smeared my upper lip with gel and started zapping my face.
Word of advice - if you've never had laser hair removal before and you're interested in having it done, then research some reputable businesses, read their reviews and then decide. If I hadn't bought this Groupon and didn't have 5 more sessions to use at THIS particular place, I would not go back. Unprofessional, uninformed, unable to answer basic questions about the technology, and not even able to follow THEIR OWN protocol regarding informing the client before handing them the waiver form.
Not to mention the clearly inappropriate cultural remark (how did she know I'm not part Indian or part Black, just based on my appearance?)
