When I visited Victoria with my girlfriend, one of the build-ups for the trip was to go have "the best soft serve in the world". Now I am a self-professed ice cream nut, which my girlfriend is firmly aware of, so hearing this boast required verification.

We went to Beacon's on a rainy Tuesday and I ordered the large soft server dipped in chocolate. And the verdict? It's really good. Compared to other soft server I have tasted it is much richer. Seems to help keep it together as well as it didn't drip all over my hand like most soft serve. Definitely going to be a regular stop in Victoria for an ice cream lover like me.

I needed fruit or juice and Beacon Drive-In appeared. I'm glad they gave me a choice (bottle or cup) on the orange juice.  It jolted energy like you would not believe. I started running along the water.

I drove by here by accident, and came back for dinner later that day.  The food was below average.  The place is a throw back to an old 70s burger stand.  The "drive thru" is an outdoor stand with a smallish parking lot for people who want to eat in their cars or take it to go.

I had a deluxe burger.  It's basically a McDonald's quarter pounder if they used fresh cut vegetables.  The patty tastes just about the same.  The halibut is like a Filet O'Fish, with a thicker cut of fish and lettuce.  I can appreciate In-N-Out much more compared to this.

Things did look up when it came to dessert.  I ordered the chocolate shake.  Although it wasn't as thick as some I've had before, it was very chocolately and thick enough to be quite satisfying.  But the soft serve cone, as simple as it sounds, was simply delicious.  Super creamy, and it strangely didn't melt at all when I was busy chowing it down.  That alone is really the only reason to visit and is 5 stars on it's own.  But my overall experience evened out with the sub-par food.

5 stars for the soft serve; 4 stars for the retro drive-in, sit-in-the-park-a-la-1980s-Sunday-Americana ambience; 3 stars overall for food and service.  BH grew up with this place and he swears it hasn't changed one bit from the 1980s.  Still making the best goddamn soft serve in all of Vancouver Island.

One thing that seriously bothered me was the tip portion you can't bypass on their cash machines.  As in it gives you the option to tip a dollar amount or a percentage.  It's a fast food, mostly self-serve joint for crying out loud! When they do deliver food to your table, it's literally plopping-down-a-tray- of-food-on-your-table.  I thought gratuity is something optional, a little pat on the back for great service, not an expected extra expense for customers patronizing a business.  Maybe I'm just traditional that way.  That being said, this place is still alive because of the awesome views of the park, great ice cream and the fact that they have no competition in the area.

The food is okay, i was excited that they had sweet potato fries, which apparently is normal for the places of Canada. I was not happy about the fact that they didn't have ranch. I mean really WTF??

It didn't take that long for us to get our food, especially considering the crowd that filled the place inside and out. I really enjoyed reading the article on the wall about a man who has been frequenting this place since he was a little boy because how much he loves his bacon! And how much he loves bacon from this place.

Now, the ice cream which is what everything else was noting about on the walls was claimed to be "The best". So, we decided to try that as well. It was okay, not the best I have ever had, but i enjoyed it.

Very mediocre cheeseburger on a stale bun. Excellent fries. Softserve is very good, very firm and creamy with cones the better value than sundaes.  Engaging, retro feel and deadly location across from the park.

2 Stars for the food and 4 stars for the softserve.

Was expecting to be knocked out of this world based on the reviews. Hasn't anyone heard of DQ before?

Not amazed at all. Cool spot though, and I'm glad to see a local shop instead of a chain. Support it before it gets bought out by Baskin Robbins.

It's a cheesy little drive-up place with maybe 6 tables inside and 8 tables outside. Most of the food (burgers, dogs, fries, onion rings) is standard, mediocre, greasy fare.

But they have damn good shakes, and by far the best soft serve I've ever had. It's pretty much a summer staple.

Also, there are always cute dogs to pat outside it, panting in the shade and hoping for fallen ice cream.

The soft serve may be delicious, but the rest of the food is garbage. We waited nearly 45 minutes for our food and when it came, the small, thoughtlessly prepared (even by fast food standards) items were a huge disappointment. My veggie burger was a lukewarm veggie patty, a couple pieces of slimy lettuce and tomato, and more mayo than one human should ever eat in one sitting all glopped together on a tasteless white sesame seed bun. Yuck.

The food was meh, but it's the location and style that got me. The whole drive in concept reflected here is awesome and in the park setting was so lovely! Grab a cone and sit on the patio and just enjoy the outdoors! Can't be beat.

The Beacon Drive In has by far the best soft-serve ice cream ever. You can get it in all kinds of weird ways (flavour twists?? what?) but in a standard cone or topped with some delicious hot fudge, it's glorious. portions are huge and so unless you're looking for a meal, a small cone will do. a friend once got a medium and it was the length of his hand. look. out. lines move fast outside but you can also always order inside as people often forget about the counter in there.
