Even though her english was just ok -- think the salon is japanese-owned-- Kae is very nice & patient.  waited for me to flip thru the men's hair design magazines.

but the best was the head and shoulder/neck/back massage, after shower AND also while letting my hair dry a bit when she led me back to the chair.  a good 5 min too.

thorough job, takes her time, blowdrying & styling, patient and for just $35 what a deal for a higher-end cut; esp. for the men lol.

10% off also if you refer a friend too.  they keep track of your visits on a card too.

parking is ok along thurlow, robson, typical dt parking.

Always coming in on the last few days of Cut+Color20% promotion. It repeats every two months so it is perfect if I can stand the ugly roots for a few weeks more...
Anyways I always see Yuko and have been for over a year and she's always consistent. She is not overly chatty and will talk if you talk to her but mostly concentrating on the haircut which turns out perfect every time~ The extra 2min massage is a nice touch too. It's great she is always honest about what I should do with my hair and never once pressured me into doing  anything more than what I need. Loving my hair once again :)

Last week I was in definite need of a hair cut.

I've been to few different salons in vancouver, most of which are a little too pricey for my pocket.  So a few of my friends recommended that I check out going to an asian hair salon -since most asian places are a bit cheaper and apparently know how to do a good job with (my hair type) asian hair!

I decided to go to Beach Hair Studio, a small hair salon (probably had 8 chairs) behind the small Starbucks on Thurlow and Robson downtown.

I had made my appointment the same day and even called about an hour before to tell them I was running half an hour late. "No problem".
I arrived just on time - though it didn't matter much since they were running late themselves.  I glanced at the magazines (all in Japanese) and thought about changing the hairstyle I currently have.

It was a very casual atmosphere and definitely a little older looking and not as sophisticated as the salon down the street or in the mall.

After a five to ten minute wait, Midori my hair dresser came to get me.  I told her that I just wanted a trim, and to keep the same sort of style.  "Maybe a few side swept bangs?"

She was very friendly, showed me a picture (similar to what I wanted) and made sure she was going to cut the hair the length that I wanted. We then went to the sink in the back half salon and Midori washed my hair.  I have to say it was probably one of the best hair washes I've experienced.  She got every part of my head massaged, so nice!

I was honestly a little worried when the scissors went to my full head of hair.  As the cut continued, I wondered if she was ever going to finish!  She was very precise! Though my hair is extremely thick you can cut a whole bunch out and still have a lot left.

Midori was friendly though she spoke little, and could be because her english might not have been that strong.  After she finished I was not overly impressed with the cut, I thought it was good, but not used to so much hair being gone since it was thinned out quite a bit in the process.

When it came time to pay, my cut only cost $37.50 ($40 minus a 10% discount for new comers like me) which is a lot better than $65 I paid at the last hair salon I went to.  Since last week, I'm liking the hair cut a lot more and more.

An affordable place that will get the job done!

I walked in here once without an appointment and got one of the best haircuts of my life.
It's a little less trendy than the other Japanese salons, but it's been around for a while, so that's saying something.

If you're Asian, always seek a hairdresser who has experience cutting Asian hair.

And don't believe any hairdresser who tells you that Asian hair 'can do anything' and is 'really easy' to cut because it's straight etc. Jump out of the seat and run away if you hear them say this!

I had no idea where to go. this is my first time to vancouver and I totally found this place strictly from yelp. I went to the location on thurlow street by the name of Beach hair studio.  They have 5 locations. The salon is staffed with japanese stylists.  My stylist  name is Sabu.... He is great! He recommended the right products for my hair. They have the natural straight and the super straight. He told me that the Super straight would have been too harsh and damaging for my hair. So he went with the natural straight. I love it! The price is also very reasonable! If I didnt live so far away I'd come again! FYI I was looking for Misako Hair Salon at 776 Thurlow and its BEACH Hair studio.
