Popped into Battista's for the first time the other day and was totally blown away!

First of all, I phoned to check if they were still open and they were just about to close but said we were more than welcome to stop by as they hadn't shut everything down yet.

Upon arriving, we were pleasantly surprised to find such a welcome and open atmosphere!  The shop was converted from a garage and has huge glass windows and a side door that can roll up!  Brightly coloured picnic tables are out front and there is even a parking lot attached to the building (which I do appreciate when coming with my children).

Battista was super friendly and Liv was quick to suggest we try the Spicy Italian and the Momma Mia (Meatball) calzones.  Boy oh boy - they were delish!  The best calzones I have ever had and I quite liked the side of marinara to dip in!  Battista also served up a sample of his nutella & strawberry calzone - Yummy!

The patrons that kept sneaking in after us were regulars who Battista knew by name.  The restaurant was clean (bathrooms, too!) and he didn't even blink an eye when my baby puked on his floor!  Yep, that's right - I said it :-(  My little guy puked on his floor and we weren't made to feel uncomfortable in the slightest!

I can't wait to return to Battista's for my next diet cheat day!  If you haven't been - go check them out!  They are closed Sundays and Monday and are open for Lunch Tues - Saturday from approximately 11-3pm.  All calzones were under $10 and beverages were $1 for a standard can of pop or $2 for a fancy can of pop - we had orange pellegrino I think :-)  Gotta love a place that knows exactly what to do - make only a few items but make them the best!  And make everything from scratch daily - Battista has a winning combination!

    Check out my pics!

Simple and Delicious menu, The secret is the fantastic pizza dough , Highly recommended, the only drawback is the location , I wish they move somewhere on whyte ave or close to campus :D .

The owners are very nice. It was our first time there and he treated us with free desert. I will defiantly go back.

I had never tried a calzone until Battistas.  Even my pizza deploring humans were impressed! Although they have a small menu with only a few varieties, they do a great job of each flavor. Mama Mia is filled with plump, large meatballs, with melty, gooey mozzarella. The spicy Italian filled with Italian sausage and peppers has a nice little kick to it.

The nutella calzone doesn't get any better! Warm melted nutella carressing fresh cut strawberries makes for a perfect ending to a meal here.

So i saw this place on top of the yelp list, and i love Italian food, so i had to try this place out. The location of this place is fairly far from my house, but the building is very unique. There is not much parking to be found at this restaurant, maybe like 4 cars can fit in their little driveway, otherwise you would have to park in the streets behind it and walk. The inside of the restaurant is of an old fashion with actually nice wooden tables and stool. And i absolutely love the giant open kitchen that they have there. You can watch them make you food, and the best part, is watching your order come straight out of the oven to your table!!!

So on my visit there, i ordered the spicy italian sausage. The lady told me it was perfect timing because they just put a batch into the oven. That just got me all excited cause i was going to get my food super fresh and hot. I waited about 5-6 minutes playing game on my phone, and i have to say, sitting there, especially when they have an open kitchen makes you super hungry because you can smell the food and it makes your mouth water and tummy growl, but in the end the wait was worth it. The lady was kind enough to bring my food the the table. It smelled so fresh, and it was packed with a lot of ingredients. Each bite you take is a mouthful of flavour and my favourite part, is the stringy long cheese that stretches as long as you can pull it.

5 STARS ***** Surely coming back here, and telling everyone i know who eats pizza pops and pizza pockets to stop and get their butts here and get something 10 x better!!!

It's a good thing I live on the southside of the city, but Battista's has me considering moving up to 118th...

Top 5 reasons to visit in no particular order

    1) The Pesto Chicken: scrumptions
    2) The Nutella Nutella Strawberry
    3) The friendly fantastic servers
    4) The big patio
    5) The Nutella Nutella Nutella Strawberry

Tasty. Great value. Great experience. Great servers. Great presence in the community too, sponsoring many different events.

I have had the pleasure of sampling a few calzones in my life but none as good as the ones I've had from Battistas. Their dough is light, airy and delicious and each filling is full of complementary flavours. Zesty pesto, delicious cheeses and amazing veggies and meats, you couldn't ask for anything more. Or could you?! Topping off the most amazing meals is the nutella calzone, marrying two of my favourite flavours - chocolate and strawberries. This sweet treat is again light and delicious, never doughy or heavy. I love the calzones and I love going back for the friendly staff.

They specialize in one thing, calzones, because focusing on one thing allows them to excel at that one thing.  And excel they do.  The calzones are fabulous.  Our delightful server, when learning we were vegetarian, suggested we get the Vegetariano calzone with pesto, just a little extra something to give it that special zip.  And it was superb, that will be my order every time I return.  The calzones were served piping hot with veggies bursting out and ooey-gooey melted cheese bubbling forth.  So delicious.  The meal was topped off by a Italian sodas.  Yum! We will be back.

Oh, and did you know that they sell frozen calzones for you to pop in your oven at home?  Well, now you do.  I will certainly be stocking up.

Stopped bye for our first calzones of the year and found the pesto chicken has been improved by the addition of roasted chicken.  It was very good before, and now it is great.
It now competes with the Mama Mia for my favourite.

Hard to beat the welcoming aroma of fresh baking calzones on a winter day.

So happy to hear the food truck preparations are on track for launch this spring.

Our first visit thanks to the Yelp reviews.

Great suprise!  Bright, friendly atmosphere, very fast preparation.

We shared the Pesto Chicken, Meatball and Classico with a Nutella and Strawberry for dessert.

I thought I had eaten calzones before but after the first bite I think my previous calzones were closer to pizza pops than these delightful beauties.  What a pleasant suprise, the crust was amazing, I've never had a crust like that before.  Each of the fillings were great and I would be hard pressed to pick a favourite.  The nutella and strawberry was a great finish to a fun lunch.

The staff were very nice and we arrived just before the lunch rush.  Seating is limited but They said they will be adding more seats in the future.

Wow. I heard about this place on CBC radio a few months back and knew I had to check it out. When I did I ended up going back 3 more times over the next 10 days. This is exactly the kind of place I love. The staff are very friendly and polite, this stands out in a town with legendarily bad service. The building and interior are cozy and well kept.

I can't think of a place that does their thing as well as Battista's. The menu is simple so as to avoid "analysis paralysis" but varied enough to satisfy a range of cravings. My personal favorite is the Mamma Mia meatball calzone but there seems to be a consensus growing around the strawberry, coconut, nutella offering.

A very unique place on the Edmonton food scene that you should definitely check out.

I'm a picky bugger when it comes to what's going into mah' bellay'. I want it always to be good, always fresh. This place does both! Cost reasonable; mom and pop operation. To that effect I would have given 5 stars if the staff had a better attitude. Side note, wish they did dinner; I will definitely return for lunch! :)

Simple, but very high quality!  It was so good that I had to buy a second one for lunch the next day.

The crust is light and fluffy while the meatballs were juicy, full of flavour, but not greasy in any way.

The service was so polite and friendly, Battista was truly in engaged in chatting with his clientele.

    Calzones!

I finally tried this place for lunch last week.  It is quite  a drive from where I work; the calzone was $8.50 and the gasoline to drive there was probably $8.50.  But it was worth it to have that sweet taste of cheese and tomato sauce.

I ordered the spicy italian calzone.  Battista personally brought me over a bottle of spicy chili flavoured olive oil to use as dipping sauce.  Delish.

They are so good at making Calzones at Battista's that they don't bother anything else.
This place is definitely now on my go-to list.  I will recommend it to out-of-towners when they visit Edmonton.

    YUM!!

Let's just start with: I hate tomato sauce, and yet while I'm here, I eat the extra that comes as a dipper for the calzone.

And that's the part of the meal I like the least.

Battista's calzones are heavenly. they're cheesy and gooey and filled with tons of delicious ingredients. The dough is incredible. And they're huge - one keeps me going all busy day!

Try the Mama Mia (meatball) - in my humble opinion, it's the best one on the menu. that said, if you have a sweet spot, make a point of sharing the nutella & strawberry - it's incredible (this message brought to you by someone who also doesn't really like nutella).

Battista & Liv cook such amazing things they can make someone as stubborn as me change their minds about certain foods!

Go often, but go early - these guys are popular and there's nothing so sad as not being able to get your calzone craving satisfied because they're already sold out!

Bada Boom Bada Bing!!!!! Try these Italian Calzones, they are fantastic. It takes a bit of time to prepare but definitely  worth the wait. The flavors melt in your mouth from these speciality sandwiches or partial pizza if you may.  Almost like having a gourmet pizza pocket with various ingredients.

Check Battista Calzones out one afternoon and you will not be disappointed unless they run out early.

Battista's Calzones does just that calzones. It's what they specialize in. Don't come to Battista's if you want pasta, or chicken fingers or donairs or anything aside from a calzone. While there are only 5 calzones on the menu Battista's does things right.  I'd rather go to a restaurant with a small menu of superb food, than go to a restaurant with a large menu of just ok food.

I got the classico calzone, and it was yummy. The dough was perfect, golden brown, and dusted with some herbs. They don't skimp on the fillings inside. This isn't like some calzones where it's all sauce and a couple pieces of meat or veggies. No this calzone is stuffed with fillings, or even filled with stuffings if you wanted to say.  The classico has mozzarella, salami, capicola ham, and green and red peppers. The calzone also comes with a little side dish of marinara sauce to dip the calzone in which I thought was fantastic.

The price here is fantastic as well. For under $10 I got a delicious calzone, plus a drink that kept me full for the rest of the afternoon. The restaurant itself is nice and simple a few tables and chairs insides, and few on the patio. It wasn't too busy when I got in, but if word keeps going around about how good this place is I'm sure there'll soon be lines around the block.

The hype is legit. Battista's Calzones is good, simple food done very well. My husband and I dropped by on a whim Saturday afternoon at around 2pm, unsure what to expect since I've never dined on 118th ave before. What I found was a cute -- pink! -- little calzone shop, that seemed to immediately brighten up the corner of that neighborhood.

As it was near their closing time, it wasn't bustling, but that also meant that I had Liv and Battista's undivided attention.

The resto's namesake is an incredibly personable man, who came to shake my hand and remembered my name throughout the entire time I was there. You could tell this place was a labour of love and pride and it also shows in the food.

In short: yum! The calzone dough was just the right thickness and consistency, and straight out of the oven, it's crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside with a light dusting of Italian seasoning on top. It's served with a tomato sauce on the side. Also, they do NOT skimp on the freshly made calzone stuffing, which include a variety of deli meats and generous amounts of cheese. My husband had the Classico which was extremely yum, and I had the Pesto chicken, also very tasty -- this made for a very filling and delicious lunch.

It impressed my husband so much that he's thinking of convincing his office to do a Battista run for one of their weekly office lunches. Who needs to do a bland Costco run for sandwiches when there's Battista's?

On top of which, the generous Liv and Battista let us sample some of their new Nutella calzone offering -- basically nutella and freshly cut strawberries in their calzone dough. Mm!

Come to Battista's Calzone if you want a tasty calzone with a slice of genuine and friendly service.

    Battista's is great.
The man knows calzones, and he does them well.
Simplicity is the key at Battista's, but don't think that "simple" means "bland" or "boring" - because the calzones here are anything but.
Sweet tomato sauce, juicy meatballs and gooey cheese - three simple elements make up one of my favourite things to eat - the Mamma Mia calzone.
And I haven't even mentioned the dough!  Its not dry or greasy or heavy.  It is the perfect delivery method of all the yumminess inside.
If you haven't tried this little gem on 118st yet, do yourself a favour and get down there - you will be treated like a welcome friend the moment you walk in the door and get to eat the best calzones Edmonton has to offer!

Battista serves up a menu of 4 calzones from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday, except Sunday.  I went with Liv V.'s suggestion and got the Classico calzone which consists of delicious Canadian mozzarella oozing out of the bread pocket, green & red peppers, onions and a merry unity of the northern Genoa salami with southern Capicollo ham.  The bread itself was very tasty and was dusted on top with some Italian seasoning, before baking.  Something that really stands out is the side of warm tomato sauce that Battista serves with his calzones.  It's a pizza sauce that's masterfully flavored and its warmth was perfect for the midday lunch I was seeking on a rainy day.

Battista is not just personable but also remarkably interested in getting to know the people he serves.  He was quite aware that I hadn't been there before, which isn't something many business owners can tout about.  The place really has the charm of an Italian neighborhood cafe, much like Luzzara's does on the east side of Whyte.  While most of the people who were at the cafe seemed to be regulars, some were so regular that he called them out and said that he'd serve me first, since they were like family and all.  That's Italian hospitality at its best!  Not that I was in a huge hurry.

The ambience is simple with clean furniture, some cute patio seating which was green in color and several cans of diced tomatoes, olive oil, black olives etc. dressing the various shelves in his kitchen. The counter itself is filled with fliers and visiting cards of prominent city officials and cops.  Also v. cards of businesses on Alberta Ave.  Battista seems to be a very proud Alberta Ave business owner himself and does a great deal of good to the neighborhood by serving up Calzones that ooze not just mozza, but also complete class of authenticity.

Battista's get 5 stars not because it's 5 star cuisine, but because it lives up to everything it said it was going to be and more.

Fresh made calzones, friendly service, and easy on the pocketbook. (do people have pocketbooks anymore?)

The menu is small- 4 calzones. But when you're doing it right that's all you need.

No need to use the crusty end pieces for doorstops like other calzones, because there are no crusty end pieces. The dough is soft and moist right to the edges. Dip if you must in the house made tomato sauce or ask for some spicy olive oil he's hiding behind the counter.

Rumor is Battista's will be adding some sweet treats to the menu in the near future, along with a new calzone or 2.

I'd suggest the spicy italian or the mama mia meatball, but whatever you choose I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I came here on the first anniversary of their opening and it was bustling! My friend and I ordered a Spicy Italian and a Presto Pesto as well a a Nutella one. While all were delicious, I liked the Spicy Italian most. It really had a kick. The nutella pizza from Famoso has always been my go-to nutella dessert, but this Nutella calzone really beat it out. The dough was sweet and crispy and just so good. I'll definitely be coming back soon.

The first real calzones I have ever had! Battista is an artist - he gets all his ingredient from the Italian Centre and he clearly know what he is doing!

You choose from 4 types - Classico, Spicy Italian, Mamma Mia (meatball) and Vegetarian. Pretty simple but you don't need a lot of embellishments when the food is this good.

I've made two lunch runs in the last 2 weeks and I keep getting asked about when I'll go back to get some more! Love it, and I still have yet to try the meatball, which I hear is pretty amazing.

Hours are 11-3, weekdays and Saturdays.

Battista's Calzones is an oasis in today's foodscape of uninterested teenagers serving uninteresting food. For less than the price of a fast food sub, you can get a freshly prepared, gooey, steamy and delicious calzone stuffed with your choice of fillings. The owner--Battista--will greet you by name if you've been by once or twice, and he treats you like a friend instead of a nuisance. It's a neighborhood spot that draws calzone lovers from all over. Do yourself a favor and drop in...you will leave full and happy!

A deft and fresh take on an Italian classic. Battista's presents four varieties of calzone, including meatball, vegetarian and spicy incarnations. Battista himself is a consummate cook and a great conversationalist, which lends his restaurant a "welcome home" feel. It is refreshing to observe the resurgence and regentrification of 118 ave; Battista's is clearly a frontrunner in this revolution.
