I live right around the corner and this is my favorite place to get pizza. The sauce is sooo basil-y, which I LOVE.
It's funny that they're practically across the street from Pizza Ring, the two are such polar opposites. -

I came here with a group of 6 or 7 people, and despite the small dining area, the staff was really great about accommodating us, and moving the tables around for us.
I ordered the bolognese with linguini. I was a little upset that they were out of the homemade fusili, but after having the bolognese, I will definitely be back. At first I thought it was a little expensive, but when I got my food, I can say that it's worth it. The portions are HUGE. I ate until I was stuffed, and I only got through about half my pasta. I took the rest home and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. The meat sauce was perfect, the tomatoes tasted fresh, and the pasta was al dente.
The garlic bread was amazing -- cheesy and buttery, but not overwhelming, and with the perfect amount of garlic. They served it with a marinara/tomato sauce that complemented it very well.
I also tried the tiramisu and the cannoli. The cannoli was ok, but I'm not a big fan in the first place. The tiramisu, however, was honestly one of the best that I've had. I polished off one whole serving, plus half of another that my friend was too full to finish. I was really pleased with the whole experience, and will definitely be back to try the fusili. -

I'm in between 3.5-4 stars.
I can't say that I've had a lot of experience with Basta Pasta, but when I was visiting Boston, I went over to a (new) friend's home for dinner and they catered from this restaurant. The cheese ravioli was pretty good and I went back for fourths for the chicken masala pasta. I didn't eat chicken, but the noodles and mushrooms were addicting man. I couldn't stop eating it... -

Ummm...Giacomo's has 4 stars and blows this place out of the water in every possible way. Are you guys on crack!?
Pizza was good, I didn't like their pasta sauce at all; it tasted as if it came out of a can (and it probably did). -

Always ask about their specials if you order by phone! If there are no specials, the pasta bolognese, squashed olives (Ask to go light on the garlic unless you want to smell like garlic for the next week. I say this and I LOVE garlic.) greek salad and any pizza are good choices. I also love their herbed goat cheese sandwich.

This place gets 4 stars for bold, flavorful, LARGE pasta dishes and vegetable sides. We ordered all over the menu - shrimp, veal, old school meatballs, chicken and cream sauce and all the (horrid word) proteins were cooked just right. Each was tender, and firm, in its own way. The pasta was also well-cooked and the sauces burst with flavor.
Major drawbacks are the lack of wine and beer, the overpriced, unsatisfying beverages they do have, and the awkward sort-of-table-service. For neighborhood take-out, this would be 5-star. For dining in, 3-star. So maybe the big mistake is calling it a trattoria... Parking is beside the point; if you're driving here, you're doing it wrong. It's just not that kind of dining destination.
But we were so happy with the food, we ordered dessert (which is rare) and took it to-go and after a short walk back home we were very glad we did! -

I went to Basta Pasta with a friend on a Thursday night for dinner. We only had pizza, but I saw the pasta dishes some of the other customers ordered and I'm excited to return to try them.
The pizza was wonderful, fresh, and flavorful (had the Margherita). We also had some canolis and tiramisu (yum!) The atmosphere was casual, though a bit crowded (only a handful of tables inside) and a bit loud (there was a party of students who were making a racket.) Other than that, I really enjoyed the place, and hope to return soon! -

Fast and unpretentious--but quality--neighborhood Italian. And a great value.
The interior is spare, and the sweet service is minimal. Yet, the overall feeling is homey and comfortable.
Portions are gigantic, so consider sharing. Pasta is perfectly prepared. I was worried that the meatballs were too big to be good, but I was wrong. Salads come with flatbread--no, more like thin tortillas. Our salad was a special, with beets and goat cheese. The vinaigrette was nice, but the salad could have used more cheese, or less romaine.
The pre-grated Parm on the tables wasn't very flavorful, but that was the only off-note. Still, an odd one in a place this good. -

Basta Pasta is a hole-in-the-wall with bold flavors and big portions. This is a small diner-type italian restaurant that serves big portion with fair prices. The thing is, I'm not even a fan of Italian food (don't kill me please) or pasta, but I *really* do like this place. The atmosphere is cozy, lazy, and snoozy.... but you'll be right awake when the food arrives!
We ordered the special beet and goat cheese salad, sauteed calamari, and the chicken marsala pasta. Service was relatively quick. The salad came with beets mixed with romaine lettuce topped generously with goat cheese and tossed with balsamic dressing. It was a solid, delicious salad, with just the right amount of dressing, although I wish they had been more generous with the beets instead of the goat cheese.
The sauteed calamari, to my delightful surprise, had a bold flavor that I didn't expect. It was the spiciest sauteed calamari that I've had --- spicy as in not just peppery-hot, but also packed with a variety of spices that blended together to create a strongly fragrant yet not overwhelming calamari dish. I will definitely order it again.
The chicken marsala pasta dish was also unlike any pasta I've had before. For started, I'd recommend getting the wheat radiotore like we did (see pic). It was the first time I've had radiotore pasta, and supposedly they resemble little curled-up radiators. (cute!) The texture and taste was rather unique: the grainy sweetness of wheat combined with the thickness and porousness of the pasta created a wonderful palatal sensation. Although I must say that the chicken was above average but not amazing (but better than I expected, since I have little faith in chicken in restaurants in general), and the sauce with mushrooms was very good, except there was not much of it. (Or maybe it's because the radiotore soaked up more sauce than usual?)
Overall, this is definitely a place I would go again to try out other menu items. At fair prices and such hearty portions, coupled with gourmet-quality taste, hell, who wouldn't order a big pasta for lunch and heat up the rest for dinner while watching Law and Order SVU? I know I would. -
Review from Vishal S.
We went to Basta Pasta based on a friend's recommendation. This place is rather "cozy" - about 6 tables and enough place to stand in line and do a take out order.
Staff is friendly and the ambiance is fun with all the vibrant colors and wall posters.
We had the following dishes -
for appetizer we had Mini aranchinis - good concept rice w/ cheese balls - was a bit dry today.
For main course we ordered -
Meatballs pomodoro- linguini was cooked just right and meatballs were big and juicy - Mmmm
Chicken cacciatore - 4 stars!
Chicken Marsala - probably the weakest dish but better than other Italian places
Risoto - most definitely the winner - greasy with good amount of butter but easy to eat and cooked just right!
Parking is a pain and the wait can be long, but worth the effort! -
Review from Calli C.
This is four stars, but with a caveat- they do have a $10 minimum for credit card purchases. We placed an order over the phone for the smashed olives pasta and the puttanesca, both with the housemade fusili, as well as an order of arancini. Easy enough to drive over, and scored a spot right in front so I could run in and pick it up. However, since I was using a groupon it turned out that with the discount I owed $5.09, and they wouldn't let me charge it. I had to run back to the car, scramble to find that amount, and run back in to pay. Thankfully they took all that change and handed over the food.
Hot and delicious smelling I couldn't wait to dive in when we got home. The dishes did not disappoint; the smashed olives is lighter and fresher, though very strongly garlicky, and the puttanesca had a nice enough kick to it to satisfy my boyfriend's need for spice. The arancini were just ok. But for the price and quantity, this is a great spot to grab some Italian food. -

I would have given 5 stars if the chef who took our order didn't remind me of 'soup nazi' from Seinfeld show and it's self service place. All the food we ordered were great. Haddock on risotto was so yummy and I had the best shrimp diablo. Their vegetarian dish, squashed olive pasta was great too!

If you're in the Central Sq area and looking for a cozy, independent neighborhood spot serving fresh, home-cooked food, you definitely need to stop by this place.
Space is small (about 6 4-seater tables) so come on an off night like Sunday nights and enjoy a leisurely pasta dinner for cheap. The Shrimp Fra Diavola has a nice kick to it and is filled with plump shrimp and chopped tomatoes in a delicious sauce. The Bolognese is hearty and rich without being overwhelming.
Prices are very reasonable and service is efficient and friendly. -

This treasure of a place is right around the corner from my apartment. Yes, you know where this review is headed.
Whenever I don't feel like cooking, get out of work late, or just want a really delicious pasta dish, I am a stone's throw away. So lucky to have a delicious Italian place nearby, but I really need to control myself!
I've tried almost half the pasta dishes they have, and my favorite so far is the baked, stuffed eggplant! Maybe because knowing that spinach is stuffed inside the eggplant makes me feel like I'm eating healthy. The paninis are also super good - favorite is the chicken cutlet milanese.
The portions are also huge! Don't get me wrong, hungry me can devour a whole plate of pasta (and maybe regret it later), but portions are large, so get ready to have some yummy leftovers most times. -

Basta Pasta is amazing, incredible, stupendous, epic, awesome, and any other good superlative you can think of.
I had the cheese ravioli (known better as heaven) and it was INCREDIBLE!!!!! My first bite (which contained no cheese) was still AMAZING and even the pasta by itself has amazing flavor. Then when I had it with cheese it was even more amazing because the whole thing was so FRESH and it tasted so GOOD.
I also had the chicken parmesan panini (which turned out to really be a sub) which was also pretty epic but not as epic as the cheese ravioli. The chicken was fresh and tasted great!
Bottom line, GO TO THIS PLACE AND ORDER THE CHEESE RAVIOLI. It is simply the best cheese ravioli I've ever had, MUCH better than the runner-up, Bertucci's. It's a tiny place so you might have to wait for a table at busy times, but trust me, IT'S WELL WELL WELL WORTH IT!
Not to mention I heard their pizza was great as well but I didn't get to try it after stuffing myself with the ravioli and panini/sub.
HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! -

What a diamond in the rough! This place is small...like 6 tables small. So small groups or take out is ideal.
There isn't much to this place but their food is great! Homemade fusilli need I say more?! Menu is pretty limited but everything on it is good. From their chicken Marsala to eggplant parm. All dishes were flavorful and plenty. Try their beet salad to start and share is a good idea too. We went in around 7:30ish and we were notified that they had ran out of fusilli :( so we had to substitute it with either a penne or linguine. I can't wait to go back and try their fusilli.
Not much service needed. Its a order at the counter and pick up kind of place. Great food!!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Although they are known to run out of homemade fusilli (no, you silly) on busy nights, ask for the homemade wheat radiatore pasta instead. Both are delicious with all varieties of toppings. Love.

It's been an embarrassment of riches after having just eaten at Vinni's in Somerville a few weeks before. Again, we hit on another terrific italian place outside the North End.
Parking is really tough in that part of Cambridge, so we picked up takeout. Each item was better than the last. My father had a sausage "paninni" (really a sub). Great red sauce, nice sausages, really, really good bread. My chicken parm was first rate, browned properly, not too thick, tender, on a bed of excellent homemade fusilli. Even better than the red sauce was my wife's fusilli fra diavolo. Wow.
Prices are very reasonable, although $18 for shrimp fra diavolo without the shrimp (my wife doesn't eat meat) is pretty steep. Again, parking is almost non-existant.
I wish this place were in my neighborhood. -
Review from Johnna M.
Where can one go for great homemade Italian food on the quick? Florence, Hanover Street and my ex-boyfriend's grandma's kitchen are all too far and complicated for me to venture out into during the rain, and luckily Pasta Basta provides all the comforts right here in Cambridge.
I've never had a dish here I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I always get the fusilli-homemade and cooked al dente! My favorite pasta dishes include the smashed olives dish and the shrimp fra diavalo. Every ingredient is completely fresh and cooked to perfection. The herbed goat cheese panini makes a great lunch-three options for bread, all equally fantastic. I've never had the pizza but smelling it coming out of the oven always makes me really jealous.
My only complaint is that $18.00 seems a little steep for one meal but for quality food that always lasts me several days? I'll allow it. Seating is extremely limited and so I opt for takeout. 20 minutes and I can still catch the Sopranos over a lovely dinner and my own glass of red wine (no booze served here!).
Haste does not make waste. -

I encountered something magical last night.
After receiving a notice that my groupon was about to expire, and being in the area around dinnertime, I decided to get takeout from Basta Pasta.
I got the chicken gorgonzola with the homemade fusilli and the sauteed calamari for an app. Brought it home and dug in. Each was very good on thier own. Then I had the best idea I've ever had in my entire life... I decided to combine them.
That's right, creamy gorgonzola fuisilli (I took out the chicken because I wasn't really a fan, also the olives, yuck) and tender tomatoey calamari, mixed together to create the ultimate dish of amazingness. I'm not even kidding when I say this is one of the best things I've ever eaten. EVER. I had a canoli afterwards and I could've died a happy girl.
Leftovers for lunch and probably dinner tonight as well :) -

I give this place 5 stars for a dish my friend got, and 3 stars for mine.
I got the calamari risotto - it was ok, nothing special. Tasted like porridge and the calamari seemed like the kind you can in a seafood mix at your local asian market, not cut fresh.
Friend got the gorgonzola chicken pasta (I forget what the actual name is), and I wish I would've gotten that one. I LOVE gorgonzola, and the mixture with the pasta and the chicken and the herbs were just delicious. Too bad I only got one bite.
Kind of out of the way of the usual touristy places though. -

The only time I've been disappointed with this place is when I ate their Pancetta pizza with Smoke Gouda. Gouda is a strong cheese flavor. And when you heat up anything, it either vaporizes (thus unearthing stronger flavors) or does something else like burn or releasing not so nice flavors. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a Gouda fan.
Last night, I got the Shrimp Fra Diavolo with homemade fusilli (thanks to all the reviews that were raving about it here). I don't regret it at all. There is so much pasta density in the fusilli that you're getting so much more than is visually there. The sauce has a spiciness that creeps up on you (like a devil!). The tomatoes and parsley are fresh, and the sauce is just beaming with garlic!1 Previous Review: Show all »

My corporate office is on Watertown so when I need to travel to Boston I always go to Basta Pasta. The homemade fusilli with walnut gorgonzola sauce with chicken (Chicken Gorgonzola) it so-o-o good but you have to get there early or it is gone which is what happened to me the last time so I was bummed. So the trick is to get there around 6:00'ish. It is a small restaurant so often we had to wait to get a table.
Parking is a challenge but what else is new in Boston? -

I wanted to like this restaurant, as it is very convenient to my house. I decided to order take out. I didn't feel like cooking. I ordered chicken cacciatore and the caprese salad. Unfortunately, the pasta w/ the cacciatore was overcooked (perhaps it could have gotten soggy being in a takeout container, but I have had pasta at places before that was not overcooked and taken it home and it didn't end up being soft like this was). The cacciatore itself was meh. It tasted like a Lean Cuisine meal, which to me, is not a good thing. There's a reason I don't eat that stuff. The taste is awful and the ingredients are awful. I would have made a better cacciatore and al dente pasta on my own. The tomatoes in the caprese salad were really starchy. Cheap tomatoes. Not juicy. The balsamic dressing essentially had no real taste to it. Iceberg lettuce as well, which, eh, I am not crazy about. Basically, it's $20 I won't get back and I ended up throwing most of the meal away as it was not good. It's a shame as I really did want to like this place. I probably will not go back, unfortunately. Maybe I was there on an off night seeing as though most of the reviews here are good, but I'm guessing I just don't like the way they make their food, so I'm not compelled to go back. Next time I'll just go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and get ingredients to make my own. At least I know it'll be good.

I'm a regular - I live around the corner.
What a place. Some stuff is not great, but the vast majority is truly exceptional for the money you pay. The new shrimp pasta dish is amazing, and I'm a big fan of the chicken cacciatore, the salads with chicken added, the pizzas, and of course the boneless wings.
Portions are also generous - I usually do take out and have a dinner and a lunch at least in any given pasta order... if not more.
Just go. -

I actually don't mind this place. I go there a bit. But you know when you have a terrible customer service interaction - a shocking one - and you walk away feeling like crap? I just had one here at Basta Pasta, after being a regular customer for a few months. So hence the one star.
They have a trainee on (no probs, I know what that's like). They get the order mixed up. I call up, they say to bring it back, we'll swap it. A nuisance, but no probs. Get back - "oh, we changed our special pasta tonight, but we didn't want to confuse the trainee, so we're just not telling customers. Anyway, it's the same price as what you paid for."
Uh, ok. Not what I ordered (whether it's the same price or not). Made to feel like it was my fault. No apology. At the very least, you think you could mention it on the telephone when I call up there's a problem, rather than make me do two trips?
Mistakes are ok - totally understand. Trainees too. Hell, everyone's got to start at a place. But that attitude?... not a way to win customers hearts and minds. -

I've been going here ever since Alton & Reno (2 Albanian brothers) opened the place. The first few times I went, it was uncrowded, which I knew would be short-lived. Then it got discovered, and -- well -- the rest is history. I used to call it "the safest restaurant in Cambridge" because at least half of the CPD police force always seemed to be eating there. EVERYTHING you order here will be good -- well-spiced and tasty. I go there less since the prices have risen, but it's still totally worth it. I was worried that quality would decline when Reno left the kitchen to open their other restaurant in Quincy, but quality stayed exactly the same -- they train their cooks well!

The pasta is delicious. But there is SO MUCH of it. And my stomach hasn't liked it all the time (which may have been some cream based options?)
I think it is good, but there is serious excess going on here. One of these pastas could feed a small impoverished country. I also just haven't found my go-to. Have had some mess with brocolli that was ok, I think the better dishes are the heavier more traditional Italiano pastaaaaa type things. Which is great, if that's your thing.
Very limited seating. -
Review from Steve L.
Best pasta available for $15 and under.
I've been slowly ordering through the menu, and I'm discovering that as good as the bigger pasta preparations are, the simpler sauces (aglio olio, olive) are better for showcasing the excellent home-made fusilli.
Also killer is the sauteed calamari - garlicky, just spicy enough to count, and not as greasy as the usual Italian treatment of the dish.
Order your panini on ciabatta. Huge, flaky chunks of bread covering excellent fillings. Now, the proscuitto wasn't exactly the premium melt-in-mouth stuff given the di Parma appellation, but it was definitely good enough for $7.
Seats are first-come, first serve. Lurk long enough (while watching Italian soccer on TV), and one will free up. -
Review from Cassy H.
A small and hole in the whole type of Italian place is how I would describe Basta Pasta. Its location is kind of random... around residential area, but hey, what do I know. I'm not from around Boston.
Moving on to the food, I ordered chicken marsala and was pretty content with taste and the amount of food I got for $15. Everything is prepared after you order (this is according to my Boston friend), so it's fresh and yummy. I thought it was alright.. chicken wasn't dry, pasta was cooked right, and the sauce was pretty good. However, it just wasn't anything amazing for me, so it's a 3 star, a-ok rating for me. I have to say for some reason my pasta wasn't as warm as I wanted and expected it to be? -

The first time I went to Basta Pasta was for a burger. It was incredible. After having the calamari appetizer and the eggplant entree, that's all I wanted to eat in general!
Super casual, affordable Italian-American place making super tasty food that reminds me of growing up first generation Italian-American.
I do, however, have a couple of weak-points. The cannoli are not so good, avoid those. There are only a few tables so if you want to eat dinner there, beware. And finally, I love coca-cola and they are a pepsi place. That's really hard for me to overcome, especially when it's bottles and not a fountain. But hey, to each his own. -
Review from Erick H.
Somerville, MA
Small, unassuming, and easily overlooked, this place sticks to what it does best without worrying about window dressing. This is clearly evidenced by the numerous awards that line its walls, heralding both the quality of its fare and its affordable prices. Portion sizes, at least as far as pasta dishes are concerned, are huge, almost guaranteeing leftovers for later enjoyment.
While the menu does include pizza, sandwiches, and salads, Basta Pasta excels with its pastas and risottos. Pastas are perfectly cooked al dente and paired with rich, bold sauces such as gorgonzola cream, or lighter alternatives including a wine and cream sauce. Add to these dishes moist, flavorful pieces of chicken or homemade meatballs and it becomes clear why this restaurants has gained its reputation and rating. Their risotto is equally as well prepared and tastes just as good, if not better, than those I've paid twice as much for.
Comprised of no more than a half dozen tables and located in a nondescript brick building, its humble appearance belies the quality of, and care given to, the food it serves. Even better, delivery is an option, leaving few reasons not to try their offerings at least once. Considering the scarcity of parking, delivery may be your best bet anyways. -
Review from Sandy H.
Brookline, MA
Ginormous portions, very reasonably priced, good food.
I love the calamari appetizer because, for once, it's not deep fried. It's swimming in a tomato based sauce that I can only describe as a red sauce on crack -- I could drink that morning, noon , and night. One pasta entree can feed a family of 4...okay, maybe more like two people with really healthy appetites.
