Made appointment w/ Camile last Saturday May 19 .. Been reading reviews about the place especially Camile's ombré .. She was very warm & inviting the minute I walked in for my 12 pm appointment .
I showed her a picture of a Mila Kunis ombré & pix of fringe haircuts .. She was able to explain every step of what she was going to do w/ my hair.. Cause I told her I didn't want the ombré to be too
blond or crazy .. I was completely happy w/ how my hair turned out .. I loved the way she cut my hair & bangs & the ombré was just perfect & natural looking... She even did nice soft curls which looked amazing . The whole staff was so nice . Everyone kept offering me water .. Camile is so down to earth & easy to talk to & very knowledgeable, giving me great hair tips . Was thinking of going to the establishment or gamine salon cause they also had great yelp reviews , but I wanted to support local small business's since I live in Highland Park .. Boy am I glad I stuck w/ Barras !! -

I went in for a cut and color. I was told on the phone that cuts are $65 and color is $60 and up.
Camile was my stylist.
$280 dollars later ...... I was totally ripped off!
Camile cut my hair. the cut was good. Then she colored my hair - I asked for the Ombre technique. It turned out horrible - chunks of my front hair had been bleached and completely damaged!!! She said she had to do a color correction because it did not turn out right.
So I came back the next morning and she fixed it.
I spent 7 hours at the salon collectively, which is not something I ever wish to do again. The hair washing chairs are extremely uncomfortable. My neck and shoulders were sore for days!
The color turned out fine after it was fixed, but my hair now feels so dry, damaged and overprocessed from her having to color it 2xs.
The part that really upset me the most is that i was charged $280 ($65 for cut and over $200 for the color) and I was told it was because she had to do a color correction. I am thinking - if you couldn't get the color right the first time, why should i have to pay for it?
She even told me that sometimes they charge by the hour!!! Any way, I told her that it was my first time here and that no one discussed the pricing with me.
If I had known it was going to cost over $200 to color my hair, I would have never gone there.
I asked her for a discount and she gave me $20 off, which was not what I had hoped for.
Needless to say, I will not be returning to this salon, which is too bad because it is a cute salon near my house. -

Alicia = talent!
She knows how to cut/trim hair big time! I've got some "nappy hair issues" under the top part of my hair and although nobody can see them... I'm the one that hassles untangling them after my showers! I'd always get my hair thinned out because I've got major thick hair... BUT the mistake that was being made was that the wrong hairs were getting thinned out! Alicia suggested we let those nappy hairs grow out and thin other areas of my hair (but not too much thinning cause she said thick hair is nice). Aww so sweet of her! She "gets" my hair and told me different ways to manage my hair.
The setting of this place is so trendy and hip. Don't get me wrong... Not one bit in a snotty way! Everyone here is so sweet and welcoming. I'll be coming back here in a few weeks for my touch up and am already looking forward to it :-) -

My original stylist tried 'touching up" my ombre, and pretty much bombed my hair... It was dark, dull and boring, and I swore never to return to him. A few days later, I went on a quest to find a colorist that could repair my hair. I scoured yelp for some color correction fairies, and stumbled upon Barras. Based solely on reviews, I called on a whim and Camille calmed my nerves and assured me all would be well with my hair. She was even able to take me the same day! Camille is a doll. She sat me down in her chair, and explained in great detail what needed to be done to correct my color. After my nightmare, I vowed to always be honest if I wasn't completely satisfied with my hair, and when I mentioned that my hair was too light, she offered to tone it down a few days later. A week later, I returned and she toned down my blondie-locks to a gorgeous golden brown. It's now been a month, and I couldn't be happier with my hair. It's not brassy, it's exactly what I wanted, and the color is perfection. If she hadn't offered to tone it down, I probably wouldn't be as satisfied with the results. She's one of those stylists with integrity, talent, and follow-through. I truly felt she cared about making sure I was pleased with the results. The salon itself is an adorable, understated space with exposed brick walls, and a mid-century minimalist flair. I will most definitely be returning to Barras, and Camille for my hair care needs. Thank you Camille!

I haven't had a professional haircut in some time (totally guilty of DIY trims) and thought it was about time to get a proper haircut. Normally I am incredibly intimidated by the process, but thanks to the vibe of Barras, I was instantly put at ease. They have a welcoming and unpretentious vibe, but still exudes "I know what the hell I'm doing."
Several of my friends go to Eric (as well as some of the other associates at Barras) and I was excited to see what all the fuss was about...and the rumors? They were all true! I went from looking like a stunt double for Samara in "The Ring" to someone that might actually have a life (you can see the picture on their Facebook page).
Next step? The infamous Barras Salon blowout... -

Post work done by Camile Color-Extraordinarie... and when I say Relaxation At Best, I really do mean that is how you feel when you walk out of Barras. Returning to the salon to get my color done by Camille was pretty darn exciting. First off, she is the sweetest most realist person. Not afraid to be herself, you can tell she's comfortable in her own skin. I'm very pleased that she portrayed a professional persona by not being distracted while doing my color. As you can tell by the photo, she deposited an ombre technique that I do believe not many can master. With that being said from my previous disaster and update, I leave Barras with yet again perfect hair. Returning this Sunday for another visit :) Love their hours... works well with my jacked up schedule. Oh just found out they do children's cuts too!
PLEASE PLEASE VOTE FOR BARRAS TO WIN A 25K GRANT!
4 days left to support an incredible independent business... And they need all the love they can get!

I just moved to Highland Park! Ever since I moved away from Westwood (lived in NoHo for a bit, then KTown), I haven't found a place where I feel super comfortable getting a cut.
THE SEARCH IS OVER! I went to Barras for the first time today and I fell in love. No, seriously. My hair hasn't looked this awesome in YEARS. I love the cut and everything Steven did for me today. Everything was great -- from the conversation to the head massage. Everyone is so friendly! I felt right at home.
I will definitely definitely be recommending this place! -

I had an AMAZING experience here. I went in last Saturday (10/08) to get my hair flat ironed.
Let me start by saying that I have a LOT of hair and the previous night I let a friend go CRAZY with it. She used a BUNCH of wax and god knows what else and my hair was EXTREMELY knotted, even matted in some parts.
Camille and Eric were AWESOME. He told her "Dont worry. Just work it out. It'll be fine, trust me" lol. Bless her heart. She had her work cut out for her...
After about 30 minutes of weed whacking, errr I mean brushing my hair, I mentioned that I had not had a haircut in almost 5 years. I was initially going to pay $45 for the blowout, plus $15 for the flat iron, but Camille mentioned that it was only $65 for a cut and blowout, so I decided to give in.
I am VERY hesitant to let anyone cut my hair. I took me a LONG time to grow it this long and I am scarred that people dont know what they are doing....
She was AWESOME!!! We took off about 4 inches, but it was SO worth it. I managed to keep the bulk of my length and my hair looked AMAZING. I went to push my hair out of my face and it fell PERFECTLY into place. It had such an AMAZING shape to it. I got OODLES of compliments on my hair, just walking home from the shop (which is at Fig/56, and I live on 57, just east of Fig).
THANK YOU CAMILLE AND ERIC!!! YOu guys are AMAZING!!! I PROMISE to take care of my beautiful new hair =) I owe you guys big time =)
P.S
Steve (steven) was there also and he is too cute! Such a sweeatheart!! Very amicable =)Comment from Eric J. of Barras Salon 10/25/2011

Steven is the best! The best! My hair always looks amazing when i walk out of there- and it continues to look amazing as it grows out. I can walk there- and want to say that you should run there!
I have a ton of hair. It can be a wild scene. He manages it always with a sharp sense of humor, style and speedy scissors. Love him!
Also, Eric has this one robe that is mine! I am just putting that out there. It makes me feel super glam and also a little bit like I am on vacation.
Camille is lovely.

So one day I decided that it'd be a great idea to try the ombre technique at home, how hard could it be, just bleach right? Wrong. So wrong. I was left with orange hair and needed help fast! I'd had so many bad experiences with stylists, I was terrified to fix it, fearing it'd be left worse.
Then Barras and they're AMAZING stylist Alicia came to the rescue. I'd done my research looking for a great salon in my area (gotta support my community) and saw all the great reviews on Alicia. I was running late to my appt. but no mind, they were still friendly. I showed her a pic of what I was trying to achieve and she said it was totally do-able! From the moment she got to work on my hair, I felt comfortable and all my nerves disappeared! She was able to achieve the ombre look I wanted, gave a great blow out and the scalp massage? Wow! I can't tell you how happy I am with the final result! And just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I got my bill...if I would've gotten this done anywhere else west of Hollywood, I would've been eating ramen for a week.
I sent a pic of my rescued hair to my friend who wants to do the ombre technique too, and now she wants to go there. Thank you Alicia and Barras salon, you've got a client for life! -

I came in a few weeks ago for the first time and saw Steve for a haircut. I asked him for something that would look as nice as possible with minimal effort, which is a major chore for me with thin, fine hair, but I was hoping for some magic. My review gets 3 stars because Steve did work some serious magic--he's a nice guy, fun to talk to, and he gave me this amazing style. Unfortunately he turned me around so I couldn't see what he was doing in the mirror, worked on me for-freaking-EVER with lots of spray and hot things, and then spun me back in front of the mirror for the "Wow," which he got. I won't deny it. He's good at what he does.
But then I got home and all his work fell limp by the end of the day and over the next few days I realized I had a horrible, horrible haircut. Without major effort, it looks like Kentucky-fried hell. I don't have the petty cash to go see this guy for upkeep frequently, which this cut would take. Nor do I want to spend a ton of time and effort myself, I wanted something as wash and go as possible, which I told him at the beginning.
I couldn't take it anymore and went to Union Salon in Pasadena to get it fixed. I didn't trust going back to Barras because I feel like that whole not letting me watch in the mirror thing and then giving me the polar opposite type of cut from what I specifically asked for weren't things that would be fixed by a second visit. I thought I'd be better off trying someplace new. Check out my review for Union Salon.Comment from Eric J. of Barras Salon 8/9/2011

I've been waiting to write this review for a long time because I felt bad writing it. Barras is adorable, the people were very friendly when I was in the salon, and my stylist was very nice.
I have a hard time telling people that I am dissatisfied in person (which is probably why I have so many negative yelp reviews), but I actually called up Barras and told them I was felt that I was overcharged a few days after my appointment.
Here's what happened.
Eric cut my hair. He's a super nice guy. He's smart, interesting to talk to, and has a very sweet daughter. He seemed to listen to what I want and assured me that he took my suggestions into consideration. All I asked were for long layers.
He cut my hair with no layers and completely straight around the edges. There was no style. He hacked two inches off of all of my hair then charged me $120.
I was flabbergasted when I got the bill. I paid it and tipped him because I didn't want to argue or make a scene. I've paid more for haircuts before, but I could have had easily gotten the same style (or lack thereof) for much less than half of what this haircut cost me.
A few days passed and I still felt like Barras took advantage of me. My hair looked really bad once I had washed it and tried to style it myself. I called the salon and told them that I felt that I was overcharged. The guy on the phone (not Eric) said "That's just what we charge for haircuts. There's nothing we can do. Goodbye."
It's been a month and my hair looks completely lifeless and flat. There are no layers to buoy it up. I wish that my complaint had been better received by the man answering the phone.
Lesson learned - be insistent about what you want your hair to look like, and ask the price beforehand. Address any qualms you have about the price when you are charged, not several days later.Comment from Eric J. of Barras Salon 9/12/2011

I love this salon - Would never have imagined such a salon would exist in Highland Park, but here it is! Beautiful salon, highly skilled Hairdresser/Stylists. Alicia cuts my hair. I like my hair simple no maintenance with a cut i am very particular about, which is not a problem for Alicia. Not only will she tolerate my high demands but she makes the whole experience so pleasant. I have seen Eric at work, and it is clear that the standard of service at Barras Salon is very high.
So in a stylish salon with a talented Artist working on your hair, and some nice tunes going in the background who would go elsewhere?!
For as long as I reside in LA I will attend Barras for all my hair cut colour and styles. -

Steven is my hair god!!! i can't remember the last time that i was happier with my stylist. I just got my hair cut for the 2nd time by Steven, and he did not disappoint. he takes his time and does exactly what I want while giving me great feedback. He trims bangs for free in between cuts. Barras overall is a great salon with a great atmosphere...but truth be told, now that i have found Steven, i wouldn't care if he was cutting hair in a back alley...i would go to him. Luckily, he's in a great salon right in Highland Park where I live. Joy!!!

Ok so I'll admit it, I'm one of those deadbeat yelpers; I read reviews and find awesome places on account of everyone else's opinions. I bring nothing to the table. Yet let this review be my road to redemption and to the start of being a more productive yelper.
First off, I called at 1pm and was seen at 2 the same day. That's a big plus for a procrastinator such as I.
The salon itself is super cute and you get a choice of beverage while you wait. (I went with the wine option, cause really, is there any other?)
My appointment was with Steven who was really nice and helpful from the moment I walked in.
It should be known that I'm the type who is very indecisive about how I want my hair cut or colored or styled, with the only requirement being that it should not be cut too short. Yeah I'm that girl.
That being said, Steven convinced me that I should blend the current color I had going ( dirty blonde-ish) with my roots and clean up the layers.
The result? Best.haircut/color. Ever.
Seriously I have just found my new stylist, the man knows what he's doing. And it was reasonably priced. He constantly explained what he was doing and why. He even let me know that since I'm pretty low maintenance about keeping up haircuts (re:procrastinator) the cut he was giving me should grow out nicely and I could go ~5 months if I really wanted to ( I don't but knowing me I probably will), which is pretty much the opposite of up selling to a client from a hairstylist. I appreciate that kind of honesty, which was a big contributing factor of solidifying Steven as my new go to hairstylist.
In addition, Steven is just an all around chill guy who's really nice, fun to talk to and not pretentious in the least. I totally want to be his friend and hang out with him at all these cool places he told me about in highland park.
He even does bang touch up's for free for his clients. Plus, if you give 3 referrals your next haircut is free.
I'm so glad to have found this place, I'll definitely be going backComment from Eric J. of Barras Salon 8/9/2011

I love this salon! My first trip to Barras was on September 1 :) and by far the best choice i have ever made. The staff is very friendly and easy to talk to. This is a big plus for me because alot of higher end businesses I have been to, the people act real snobby :/ But not here, I was treated like a princess! Steven was the stylist who worked on my hair, did an amazing job by the way, gave me a beautiful end result. I walked out of there feeling sexy and confident ( i have lived in Highland Park all my life and I have never had a homeless man compliment me on my hair hahaha) That's how awesome it was :D

I have thick, long, somewhat frizzy hair and Alicia is a genius when it comes to making me look like a million bucks. Easily the best color and blow-out I've ever had. We started using the non-toxic yogurt based color while I was pregnant, and I am now a convert. Also, she is very sweet and lots of fun to talk to.
Eric and Steven are also great- I've had excellent haircuts with them both. I highly recommend Barras Salon. -

Eric is amazing. He does all types of hair, but is especially good with mixed raced or curly hair (which is so hard to find).
And there is a nice small vintage shop at the back of the salon. I bought a beautiful dress there which will probably be with me forever. -

If I know I have an important date coming up and it is close to the time to get a retouch and a trim I save it for Eric. I walk out with fantastic hair that I am ready to show off.
I finally found my savior after having my hair butchered for years from people that do not know how to cut curly hair. Eric knows just what to do to my hair. The cut is perfect every time and grows out well.
Did I mention he is also a wiz at colour?
Did I also mention, people always comment how well my hair looks? Well that is all thanks to him! -

I have been going to this Salon for several months now and have been remiss in not writing this sooner. I had been looking for a salon in my neighborhood that had style and an understanding of what's current in fashion. I am very busy ,as most of us are these days ,and I don't care to spend half a day or more driving and sitting in traffic along with the time it takes to cut and color hair. After trying another salon in in my area,(Highland Park) , I came across this one by doing some research on the internet. The first time I saw this place I felt that it was aesthetically pleasing and has an unpretentious and individual style in decor. It's very relaxing and there is a feeling like you're kind of hanging out at a cool clubhouse. Instead of the typical smock ,you choose a groovy vintage caftan to wear while having your hair coifed. My stylist has been Alicia and she is very bright and meticulous in her work. She always has great advice and has unfailingly recommended the best products for my hair. She has a rare ability to interpret what I am looking for . Sometimes I'm not even so sure what that is but I think she really Gets It . Recently she gave me one the best haircuts I've ever had and I have gotten many compliments on it. She will give you ideas you never thought of that are thought provoking and may lead you into a new style direction. I hate to give any negative aspects here but if there is one it would have to be time management. When I make an appointment I don't like to be kept waiting. This review would be 5 stars otherwise.

This salon is amazing! I moved to Highland Park this past summer from Santa Barbara and was worried about finding someone to cut my hair without having to go far away. I certainly didn't expect to find such a cool high end salon on Figueroa Street, but I'm quickly realizing that Highland Park is very underrated. I love this neighborhood and supporting the young businesses that make it such an awesome place to live.
First off, my haircuts here have been fantastic. After reading the Yelp reviews I called and was able to get an appt for cut and color the same day since word hasn't spread too far yet about what a great salon this is (but I expect it will happen soon). It was a wonderful experience - the 3 stylists are so nice and fun to talk to (especially my stylist, Steven - love him!), the salon is beautiful, and you're treated like a princess. The owner, Eric, did a fantastic job renovating the space - it's is a big open loft-like space, the furniture is all unique vintage pieces, cool artwork on the walls, delicious smelling incense, and Pandora playing great songs. I want to come hang out here even when I don't need my hair done! There's an area in the back with vintage clothing and accessories for sale at great prices - you can shop while your color sets! The head massage was worth the haircut price alone (the first cut with Steven is $55 and subsequent cuts are $75), and my cut and color turned out great - I got lots of compliments at work. A few weeks later I decided to stop trying to grow my hair out and go short again. I would only go to someone who I knew to be an excellent stylist because short pixie cuts can be tricky. After seeing Steven work I knew he would do a great pixie cut, so I went back and came out with the best haircut I've ever had in my life! And I've had pixie cuts on and off for the past 10 years. He spent 3 hours and did a dry cut so that he could get every little piece to lay perfectly. It looks so cute and stylish - way better than the photo I showed him of an old cut I had - I couldn't be happier! I'm CONSTANTLY getting compliments about it. I feel like a new person and have Steven and his talented hands and vision to thank. I don't write many reviews, but Barras Salon definitely deserves to be recognized. They give a superb hair salon experience and deliver fashionable cuts and styles for reasonable prices. I will never go anyplace else as long as I live in LA. So obviously, I cannot recommend this place enough! -

I just love this place! I have lived in LA for the majority of my adult life (15+ years) and have not found anyone to match my hair color (in multiple attempts to go "natural"). Alicia went over and above in doing just that (strawberry-blond), while suggesting something fun to spice it up a bit. The neighborhood is filled with independent shops like this and the vibe in the salon is chill and friendly, with great tunes in the background. I've been recommending this place to most friends and think this is a gem in LA.

I first met Eric Johnson when he was over at Visions, which then became Warren Tricomi. When I learned that he had opened his own Salon it was no problem for me to make the trip to Highland Park from West Hollywood because for 3 years I lived 500 miles away and flew in specifically for him to do my hair.
Now, I am not rich nor am I a jet-setter by any means but I had come to the realization in 2002, when I first went to him, that going anywhere else would be a waste of time and money because I always ended up calling Eric to fix whatever disaster the other salon had done to me. I knew I had found the best in him when I saw him repeatedly doing the make overs for the girls on "America's Next Top Model" and the first few seasons of "American Idol". All of those fabulous hair extensions and alot of the cutting edge cuts and colors are the results of his ingenious talent. He now owns a hip and trendy salon in an up and coming neighborhood and it's not uncommon to be seated in a chair next to one of his many celebrity clients who also have no problem following him wherever he goes.
You will love Steven, another fab stylist at the salon as well, I can't forget the shout out for him, he's a doll!
With down tempo house music playing in the distant background, the positive energy and the good vibes flow through this place while you get the look that no one else can seem to master. -

I have to say it is pretty awesome that I can walk into the salon and simple leave my hair in her hands and walk out feel so beautiful! I love the look and feel of the salon and enjoy my time spent there. I highly recommend this place to everyone I know. Thank you Alicia for giving me such great hair!

I've been looking for a salon in my area for a while now and encountered a few misses (cut my hair in 10 minutes and don't blow dry it afterwards? nothankyounotforme.) As soon as I walked into Barras I got a great vibe. Beautiful space, friendly staff, fantastic music playing (yes, I know its not indicative of a good haircut but it makes me happy) all culminated to one of the best haircuts I've ever had. Steven cut and styled my hair for over an hour. And it looked amazing. Not in the "omg my hair looks great but I could never do this myself way" but in the "i just spent two hours at the salon so my hair better look damn good" way. All that and a free bang trim whenever I need it? I totally found my place.

I come here for Alicia and she is amazing with color. I think I should have been born a redhead, and Alicia makes me look it with a bit more pizazz! I get so many complements on my hair! She also does a very good job taming my boyfriend's hair with a hair cut.
The salon is a beautiful little spot decorated amazingly, and the other stylists are very friendly. I highly recommend this salon! -

I love my bouncy curls, love the great service, love the cute salon. What more could I ask for. A huge bonus, it's in my neighborhood. Thanks Eric and to the rest of the staff. Plus, wearing a kimono-like robe while you get dolled up was fun, fun, fun!

If you are the type of person who knows you get what you pay for, you'll appreciate Eric.
For years -- years -- I've followed up on every kind of recommendation, and I've never been able to find anyone who knows how to cut my hair. I have thick, long, wavy hair that likes to do its own thing. Eric is the only person EVER who didn't blow out the waves and hairspray the crap out of it after he was done -- instead he gently styled my new cut and showed me how good it looks with my natural waves. Those of you who have thick, wavy, long, or difficult hair know what I'm talking about. -

Steven is Eric's assistant and he also is a superb stylist. After searching--for over ten years!-- all over LA to find someone who wouldn't chop my long hair off I found this wonderful salon right down the street. It's easily the classiest place in Highland Park and I can't go anywhere else now.
