I stopped in Victoria as one of the ports of call for an Alaska inside passage cruise.  I had a friend drag me here because "the halibut fish and chips are not to be missed!"  And, he was certainly right.  I'm not a local to Victoria, so I can't speak on relevance of price and quality for that area.  However, compared to what I might get in the East SF Bay, these were SOOOOOO good.

Parents, here's the fourth star - the dock immediately in front of Barb's had really friendly harbor seals that kept us company for several minutes.  Of course, as a tourist, I whipped out my camera (though I was responsible enough not to feed it the fish and chips).  I thought that made for a really golden experience.

I hate to play the "back in the day" card, but really, I have to on this one.

Back in the day - see? there it is! - Barb was a real person who wanted to feed the fisherman a good solid meal at a fair price. We went there when it was THAT place. We loved it, not too many people, amazing fish and chips, awesome!

Then....Barb sold it to a guy or company or something, and he promoted the hell out of it and basically turned it in to a money suck. The fish and chips are good, you get a good portion of chips and a fair potion of fish. I do like that you can refill your own drink anytime you like. Seating is very limited, although they have recently expanded the deck.

I have to say that now when friends come in from out of town we go to Red Fish Blue Fish or even better Fairfield Fish and chips which truly is the BEST tasting I've ever had. We still go down there, look at the house boats, pound our feet on the dock to call the seals and feed them a sardine, but when it's time to eat? We go somewhere else. Sad, but that's what it's turned in to now.

Landmark? For sure! Great Atmosphere? Absolutely! A place to get a good meal at a fair price? Not so much.

We used to come here right at 11am when the opened and get our fill of Halibut and Chips. We had our lay overs in Victoria and had already been at work since 4am so we think it's ok to eat such a heavy greasy meal so early in the day. We would follow this buy a nap in our hotels or on the grass.
Nothing gets me more excited than fresh local fish and batter on a hot summer day! Great location, scenic area, with lots to do or not do!
    Yum yum yum!

After seeing the advertisements on numerous brochures on Victoria, I just had to check out Barb's Place.  Yup, it is a local landmark.  Be careful not to follow your GPS address for Barb's Place.  My Garmin had 2 listings for Barb's Place.  The first one took me to someone's residence; wth?  The second one took me to Barb's Place warehouse; doh!  I finally asked a local where Barb's was and he told me to follow Belleville St heading west until I run into Fisherman's Warf.  Belleville St changed names 4-5 times before finally becoming Lawrence St, where the warf is.

We finally landed at Barb's Place to find a constant line out front.  This place is very popular.  Finding a seat to eat your food is even more difficult.  My GF and I had to stand around until someone was done with their meal before we got a seat, then I ordered my food.

My GF ordered the Fish Sandwich and me, the Fish n' Chips of course.  OMG!  Best tasting breaded fish I've ever had!  Neither the fries or the fish were greasy.  It was so perfect.  The fish was perfectly cooked.  For sure, this was super fresh fish because each bite was sweet bliss.  I tried my best to make it last.  One week later and I still have fantasies about Barb's fish n' chips.  If you're in the area, don't forget to check out Barb's Place!

Food seemed expensive and the wait was absurd. It took about 20 minutes from when we ordered until when our pager went off. how long does it take to fry fish and chips?

They pretty much got a monopoly on the fishermans wharf area as far as any kind of lunch goes..... I would eat before I got there next time.

Got halibut (one small piece) and chips- was $13.

Get a kids meal if you can- they are half the price and the same size (just sans coleslaw).

nice views in the area and kind of fun to walk around and check out the house boats.....

Not gonna lie, this is not my favorite place to get fish and chips. I have been here once or twice because in the summer its great to walk along the dock and see the seals.

This might sound harsh but eating the food here reminds me of eating some of the food on BC ferries, its over priced for tourists, and it doesn't taste all that great. The fish itself is ok, the the fries are horrible, they are just frozen fries.

Yuck. If you want a real fish and chips experience this isn't the place to go. Instead if you happen to be down in that area go for a nice walk along the dock and see as I said, the Seals or check out the house boats.

    Awesome fish & chips!

We happened to stumble across Barb's trying to find a store and what a great surprise. The fish was fantastic, perfectly crispy not oily, a great breading around the halibut and the piece of halibut was delicious! The only reason I am not giving it the full five stars is because the chips were not as great as the fish along with the chowder. If i had just eated the fish it would have been perfect!

Great location along the water. I can see how it is a tourist spot but even if I wasn't a tourist I would still stop by now and then.

I had heard this place has the best fish and chips ever.  The were really tasty.  But maybe a little overpriced.  It was really nice to sit outside by the wharf and just enjoy the houseboats and kitties.  I was pleasantly surprised that they also had a very nice salad: big, fresh, and with lots of veggies.  The salad added a lot to the meal so we weren't bogged down with all the fried.

Maybe it's the whole experience for me, but I love eating at Barbs Place.
The food is made to order, and comes out hot. I got the two piece halibut and chips to share. I liked the little blast from the past with the pager they handed to ensure you know when your order is ready. I didn't know pagers were still used outside the medical field. We had a short wait but enough time to feed the local Harbor Seals, and have a short walk prior to our meal.

Maybe it was the whole experience, but I loved the meal, sitting on the dock, feeding the seals, and enjoying family and friends!!!. I will definitely take the Harbor Taxi to add to the next experience.

The fish is fresh and they serve large portions, however when we went the fish was just dripping in oil and grease. The fish was nearly over cooked and the batter was heavy and dense. I'm sure there must be better fish & chips around here.

Great food, but a little on the expensive side considering they are paying teenagers to cook the food and there is no real service. The pager idea is good, it allows you to wander the docks until your food is ready. I go there at least once a month in the nice summer months!

Barb's is definitely overpriced, but we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.   It's in the category of "take advantage of tourists" establishments, but I thought the fried fish was well prepared.  The fries were forgettable, but you get a lot of them.  We also ordered the steamed mussels & clams, which my husband said were very good.  I have no doubt that you can find better food in the area, but I think Barb's is a solid destination where you will receive satisfying food (even if your wallet feels a little too light afterward).

Very good Fish N Chips, a bit greasy.  Onion rings good, but not great, ran out of chowder, and soda (CO2) ran out.  Not good for a sea food joint...Bit pricey.

Barb's Fish and Chips is a landmark Victoria business. The restaurant floats on the docks by the house-boat moorage. As a Fish and Chip shop, you expect very good fish and Barb's doesn't disappoint. The batter is light and not too greasy. The fish is flaky and not too fishy. Lovely.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I have been here several times and every time its soooo good. We live in Seattle and we've taken trips to Victoria specifically to eat here. It's the best fish and chips I've ever had, ever. It gets pretty busy, but its nice to walk down the pier while you wait, and it's worth the wait.

Went with the family.  Waited around for about half an hour for our food.  Went to check on the delay and our ticket was found on the floor of the kitchen right by where the cook was standing.  They then served up some of the most greasy and bland fish that really challenged the limits of edibility.  Definitely seems to have a captive audience...
