Review from Laini G.
Allan G and I were really nervous about trying this place for the first time based on other Yelpers' experiences.
Would we be fondled at the door and called "sexy?" Would the food live up to the hype? Would it be packed to the gills?
Only one way to find out. We finally girded our loins to make our own choice, and visited yesterday. They were obviously busy when we got there, it bein Saturday morning and all (about 9:30-ish), but a table along the wall in the front room emptied right as we got there, so that was perfect.
Ernie was either in the back room or not there, as we did not have to fend off any sexist comments, and this made me happy. Tom was our seater guy and half-time waiter, and he did a good job, along with the other girl or two who seemed to be splitting time on our table.
Take in the German style room-- wood trim, cuckoo clock, carved wooden plates, prints of Neuschwanstein castle-- after you've decided what you want.
Al got the regular coffee, and didn't gripe, which surprised me. Usually he's quite the coffee snob. I had the mocha, which mostly tasted like hot chocolate, but was still good.
I had the Benny with Bratwurst, and he had the Bratwurst and Eggs. Both came out quickly, and were nice and hot. The Bratwurst hunks were enough to keep the Wisconsin German roots in me happy.
The benedict was good, and the hollandaise is pretty wicked, as Liv mentioned. I could barely finish one brat, let alone two! Especially with the massive Everest of fried potatoes alongside. They were also good.
The total was a nice respectable amount, and the food kept me going carving out new flowerbeds in the backyard until about three o'clock. Those Barb & Ernie's carbs don't mess around! We're now believers. -

This is one of my regular joints after either a hard night of root beers or when guests are visiting from afar.
My standard fare is a schnitzel Benedict which is a delicious benny breakfast with a giant schnitzel slab big enough for a mid-western american. I Loved it.
I've only got regrets about their coffee... I can't stand the coffee. It's your run of the mill percolated brown blah that comes with most diners.
I've been there for food in the evening and enjoyed the german fare. The atmosphere is great and I've always had fun when I'm there. -

This used to be my favorite breakfast place in Edmonton, however the quality has gone down a little since the owners have stepped back. I always get the eggs benedict. It's the best I've ever had, and their hollandaise is just perfect! I always feel a little rushed though, because they're so busy, and the staff often seem impatient.
The last couple times I went there were egg shells in my benedict, and the portions have gotten a lot smaller, which is why I gave 3/5 rather than 4/5. -

I was really disappointed with my first experience at Barb and Ernie's, it wasn't too busy but the service was really slow. I mean, it took over 30 minutes to push out our food. I ended up with the B&E's special breakfast that came with 2 eggs, some fruit, my choice of meat (bacon all the way!) and my choice of side (2 potato pancakes).
I immediately regretted my choice as the eggs had a strange plasticy taste to them and were really small, but still edible and the fact that it took so long for my food to come out I didn't want to complain. The potato pancakes were plain, but as I got into them a little bit more and some extra toppings (butter) they were really delicious and filling.
The only thing that really bumps this review up one star is that after we got our meal our server was by really often to offer coffee refills. -

Next time you're eating breakfast at Barb and Ernie's, take a second to take in the food, the company, and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Everything in dark oak and videos of Barb and Ernie's Europe vacations playing on the video screens nearby. Why do this? Because Barb and Ernie's is one of the most popular breakfast places in town, and B&E will have no qualms with kicking you and your food baby outta the joint once you're done your meal. With a line-up out the door (yep, even in cold Edmonton weather), eating here means you don't get the luxury of nursing a coffee for an hour after brunch.
That doesn't mean it's not awesome. It just means that when you're enjoying your meal, be that bratwurst and potatoes, or something from their new "lighter fare" menu, you've really gotta enjoy it. I love that they've added some healthier options to the menu, which are pretty decent indeed.
Staff here are nice, if looking like they're stretched a bit thin. Take the long way to the bathroom to explore the whole house.Listed in: Four-Stars, Change your life, Breakfast, Homestyle

Simple hearty breakfast food. Come early if you want to get seated right away and come hungry.
Ambiance is fun, food is simple but done well and no one looks at you funny for ordering a beer at 10am. -

Lederhosen optional but recommended. Barb & Ernie's is my go-to place for a big, hearty breakfast. I love the white wine Hollandaise sauce on their eggs Benedict. It's so luscious and smooth that I could drink it from a cup. The shredded potatoes are buttery little morsels of carb heaven. The decor is so over-the-top kitschy (normally a huge turn-off for me) that it is at once charming, cute and welcoming. I've noticed there is a love/hate dichotomy for Barb & Ernie's but I am firmly on the "love" side of the divide.

Having noticed that the sign out front of Barb & Ernie's had changed for the first time in forever, I figured I should probably try the "TUESDAY GERMAN BUFFET" that was good enough to usurp the "BEST EGGS BENEDICT".
Full disclosure: I am one of the very few in the city that was not a fan of this Edmonton institution. I didn't find Ernie charming or fun, I found him loud and irritating and the food just wasn't good enough to put up with his harassment.
I was pleased to see that he was nowhere in sight when we showed up for dinner. The place was quiet and there was a small buffet set up on the far side of the restaurant. It included potato pancakes, sauerkraut, red cabbage, mashed yams, 3 kinds of sausage, schnitzel, and smoked pork chops. We were started with a bowl of soup and a basket of bread before heading to the food line.
It was good. As good as a (not very busy) buffet can be. Some of the food suffered from sitting out (the potato pancakes were a bit soggy and the schnitzel was no longer crispy), but it was all tasty (they yams were crazy good and the smoked pork was like a hammy pork chop with dark gravy and it was so tender and yummy). I was initially concerned that there were so few choices on the buffet, but when everything tastes good, you don't need a lot of extra filler.
But it didn't stop there - there was a small table of desserts that included chocolate mousse, cheesecake and various different cakes.
AND we were able to dine in peace and enjoy our own conversation without having anyone hover over the table and bellow at us. -

Maybe there is something I am missing, but I have a hard time agreeing with the other reviews.
I am all about supporting the little German couple who run this joint, but any time I have gone here, I have been sexually harassed by the male owner and have been unimpressed with the food. "Ernie" is so over the top in his comments to guests (He calls the women "sexy" and the men "sexless") - I guess it is something you have to prepare for when you walk in the door (although this seems like quite a burden just to have some brunch). My mom had even told me that we went here once as kids and he had called my dad "sexless" and my sister and I "sexy"... We were 10 and 12. Yuck.
I went here recently and turns out that "Ernie" has not changed. I might be able to suck it up if the food was good, but I was not overly impressed.
I will not be going back here for brunch or breakfast. There are much better places to go where men won't be in your face. -

Been there twice. Once for their famous eggs Benedict and once for dinner. Found the restaurant itself to be filthy and the food is terrible. greasy eggs, stale crumpet and average hollandaise. The fish was frozen, preformed wedges, deep fried to an golden and greasy frozen in the middle. staff didn't seem to care to replace it or comp it. Don't even get me started on the schnitzel. Over all, I would not feed their food to a dog.u

ummmm it was ok. I went for breakfast and there was a huge line up. There was only two of us so I was hoping it would be quick...not..I had to stand outside and wait..and wait..and wait.. Adam for 2..yes Im in..sitting right next to the door damn it...Everytime that door opened it was freezing and my company kept moaning about it. The food came and well the portions are just huge but the food was meh just ok. The owner was kinda annoying as I was trying to eat and he kept yelling something about me. The staff seemed unorganized, I think they are akll reltaed. So would I go back, meh maybe I see they do dinners maybe they can redeem themselves.

This is my new favorite Sunday Brunch spot! The food is to die for, the feel is very homey and the service is incredible. All the staff are incredibly friendly, especially Ernie who always strokes the ladies egos. "Hi Beautiful!" "Hello Sexy!" & "Hey Gorgeous!" can be heard whenever a woman enters a restaurant. Who isn't a sucker for compliments like that? As for the food so far my husband and I have tried the Eggs Bennedict (AMAZING), the German Pancakes (ALL TIME FAVORITE) and the Cordeon Bleu & Eggs. (Very Tasty!) Whatever standard I had for Brunch before has officially been raised. Yay Barb & Ernies!!!

Barb & Ernie's is one of favorite places in the city.
The reason this restaurant is so wonderful is because of Barb and Ernie themselves. The have worked relentlessly to keep their business going and now it is thriving on Edmonton's south side.
The restaurant has a home style atmosphere and it is decorated with pictures of Barb and Ernie's many travels. When you leave this place, you feel like you know them both. It's incredible.
You can read the story of how they met on their website - it really is a great story - as well as look at the menu to see what catches you eye.
I love walking in here because Ernie always greets me with either "Hello sexy" or "Hello beautiful" and, although he says that to all the women who come in, it still makes me smile.
I haven't been to Barb & Ernie's when it isn't busy so be prepared to wait for 5 minutes. Believe me, it is worth the wait.
The food here is incredible too. They have some of the best breakfasts in the city! If you haven't been, you should definitely go.
This German couple is sweeter than pie and they have created a wonderful reputation for themselves that is true to the core! -

I love the love story that goes along with the Barb & Ernie's legacy. They met as teens in Germany. She was from a wealthy family, he was not. They were afraid their parents would not accept their relationship, so they got pregnant and had babies. Getting married was then just the "right" thing to do. They moved to Canada and opened their own little restaurant, now an Edmonton fixture. At Barb & Ernie's, it's familiar and cozy. I'm not much for schnitzel, but their eggs benny can't be rivaled. The seafood eggs in white wine sauce are also delicious, and I've always enjoyed the service. Friendly, homey, as if you're eating in their very own kitchen. My boyfriend has gone there since he was a kid, and when he was little, Barb let him go into the kitchen and gave him a tour. The places you grow up with always hold a place in your heart, and stomach. It's always busy here on weekends, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. You'll always see Ernie circulating and chatting with regulars. Even if he doesn't know you, he'll make you feel right at home in his restaurant.
