Perhaps under new ownership, perhaps turning a new leaf.
I've heard word-of-mouth reports that Bar On Locke had terrible service, bad food, etc.
Not in my experience!
My first visit was for drinks in early Autumn. The dark lighting and decor set quite a fitting mood for drinks with a date, and there was no need to talk over the music. Somewhat a limiting selection of beer, they do have a lot of nice wines and they have Caffrey's on tap. We were sort of rushed out after an early last call, but the menu clearly states that their hours of closing are very fuzzy and they close when they feel like it. Fair enough! I can't fault them for that.
Second visit was last Saturday, and this time we stayed for food. She had the pear & rum chicken, which tasted really quite nice.
Myself, I had the vegetarian meal that was on special. Ravioli and spicy sauce with caesar and garlic bread. While the ravioli themselves were ever so slightly undercooked (as to my preference), the sauce was DAMN TASTY. The caesar as well was slightly bland, and could have used more garlic to sharpen the taste.
Of particular note of the night were the caesars (drink) ordered after dinner. We ordered ours with gin (tanq) instead of vodka. The bartender seemed surprised and had never heard of this mix before, but I assured her, and my date, that it tasted great just the same. -

They charge for tap water, even if you are ordering food. Astonishing, really, and unprecedented in my experience.
Enough said. -

Shitty service.
I've never left a bad tip before, in fact, I am a GREAT tipper (typically over 20% for adequate service) but at this place, I let the change from my bill (which was less than a dollar). I wanted our server to know that's what I thought of her service.
Aside from the fact that they will charge you for a glass tap water EVEN if you are ordering food, the waitress was a total bitch, and wouldn't split our bill, claiming that she was too busy, when a glance around the small restaurant showed it wasn't even at half capacity.
I can *sort of* understand them charging you for tap water if you are sitting there taking up a table and not paying for anything, but I think if you order food, you should get your water for free.
At any rate, I will never go there again, and I have encouraged friends not to go there either. There are plenty of other establishments on Locke street that I would rather give my business to.
