The Banana Leaf came highly recommended so we knew we were in for a treat.
Just to clarify we are food freaks (1 x lactose intolerant and 1 x vegetarian) so sometimes eating out for us and having a choice can be a little challenging.  We went through the menu with our server just to confirm what had shrimp and fish sauce so that we made the correct choices.  Our server knew the menu so well and made some fantastic recommendations.
The shredded mango salad is a phenomenal salad.  The flavours are sublime.  Just a shame it had fish sauce in it so my husband couldn't enjoy it as well.  The lamb shank was heavenly - the meat fell off the bone and the sauce/gravy was a perfect complement.  Again such subtle and well matched flavours.  The tofu starter with sweet chilli was fantastic and would have been an awesome lunch dish.
The service was excellent and the bill not too steep considering we'd both had starters, entrees and shared a bottle of Mission Hill.
The only weird thing about the Banana Leaf was the music in the background - hardcore dance/trance!  It was such a bizarre choice of music for this restaurant and didn't really want to make us hand around for dessert.

I've eaten here a few times - and it's always been amazing. The food is always great, the atmosphere is cool - kind of feels like you're in a jungle, and the servers are attentive.

I recommend going with a large group and ordering a bunch of different things, since it's all delicious!

    This location deserves more love!

It's the best of the 3, in the opinion of this Malaysian food junkie!
Roomy dining space (unlike Denman), prompt, polite service (unlike Willow) & well-executed food every time (unlike Denman or Willow).

    Hits:

roti canai - I can live on this flatbread alone. That curry dipping sauce is only fueling that addiction.
Singapore laksa - mad props for cooking every seafood (why hello, al dente squid) to the right doneness.
Malaysian bone-in chicken - fall-apart tender, righteous kick in the sauce.

    Miss:

rendang beef - rubbery beef is a crime. hopefully, a 1 time offence.

Top marks for consistently satisfying both my stomach & my wallet. A rare feat!

Pretty good food and fast service. Everything I ordered was packed with flavor. The portions were kind of small especially for the price of some of the dishes. the dishes ate meant to be shared, so if you are dining with a larger party of 8 for example, then it would be wise to order 2 of a couple dishes.

The food was fantastic, probably the best banana leaf location (better than their other broadway location).

We ordered a number of dishes for a group of 5, all were AMAZING.

The only thing I didnt like was the lack of attention and mediocre service. No one makes eye contact with you when your trying to get their attention. Also the wood chairs with the arms were uncomfortable, unless your 115lbs. The decor is tack-city but who cares you go there for the food.

Also its annoying to go to the counter to pay by credit card... thats just low-class, get with program people upgrade your credit card processing machine.

Wow I think I just found the best Malaysian cuisine in Vancouver..  I really enjoyed the whole experience here.

The restaurant name "Banana Leaf" caught my attention and I was feeling famished so when I unhesitatingly entered the restaurant I definitely got more than I asked for.  From the outside it looks like an everyday casual restaurant but you'd be amazed by how many awards they have won. (check pic!)   and the colorful interior design is superb.  The waitors wear these ethnic aprons and of course not to mention the people love us on Yelp in the front :p  The waitor greeted us very warmly and every single staff was so accommodating and really made sure we were enjoying every minute of our dining experience.

I was rather overwhelmed by the abundant menu choices so we ordered the 9 course dinner ($28/person)  I especially enjoyed the green beans, seafood curry and curry mussels!  They were all cooked to absolute perfection.  The satay with dipping sauces were heavenly as well.  Just be aware, that the 9 course dinner is really filling so you might have to to take some home because you cannot go home without eating dessert.

Last but not least the Fried banana with ice cream was scrumptious and a good way to end dinner.  Presentation was great as well.  I would not say this is fine dining but definitely not so casual either, somewhere in between is right.

Needless to say for the comment card I ticked Excellent for pretty much every criteria.  Next time will bring my friends here...you should too!

Hope you enjoy the pictures of the delicious 9 course dinner I've uploaded!

Where to take my most well-traveled friend who has a family-style eating preference for dinner when she comes to visit? Why, Banana Leaf of course.

South Asian dishes with a Malaysian bent, the food here is consistently and mouthwateringly delicious. If food with a little kick is your kind of thing, then your taste buds will not be deprived here. Complex without overwhelming, the flavours are perfectly balanced in every dish I've ordered. And order I have: Assam curry scallops, dungeness crab in kum hoeing sauce, Alaskan black cod in ginger sauce, braised lamb shank in cumin and star anise, sambal fried okra, nasi goring -- the list goes on and on.

An ideal place to bring friends from out of town, the energetic vibe at Banana Leaf is the perfect partner for the unofficial family-style that the dishes lend themselves to. All in all, a super satisfying evening out.

I met a friend at this location of the Banana Leaf and it was super good. It's not the modified menu as at the Denman location -- it has the full menu as at their location at Broadway near Cambie.

My friend hadn't tried Malaysian food before and was a little skeptical. I encouraged him to try the roti, and we had the seafood stirfry and the green beans, with rice in banana leaves for 2.

We really enjoyed our meal. My friend was impressed and loved everything -- and we had enough to take some home!

We are gluten/ dairy free and this is our GO-TO place for tasty, spicy, veggie cuisine that can suit our restrictions without leaving us feeling like we have asked for too much by asking for a GFCF option... The menu is superb with healthy options that taste unbelievable.... We eat veggie and fish and the menu is still huge considering what we're looking for. Portions- very decent. Service- always pro... Excellent attitudes and the decor I just love! With the exception of that big yellow room where they put peeps with young kids... I understand why and appreciate the atmo when I am in the big tropical room- but that yellow room just sucks...just sayin'. But if it's that luscious tropical room you are seated in, more than likely - you will enjoy it completely.

I love, love Malaysian food. I find it is so exotic and delectable. One of may favourite places is the Kits location of Banana Leaf.

One of the advantages of a big group is getting to try as many dishes as possible. We dined out large on all the fine Malaysian offerings. I love roti, the simple break/wrap/tortia like side.

All the dishes were great, espicially the seafood ones. I enjoyed the tasty sauces from the lamb, shreeded beef, fish, and mussels. Everything was splendidly delicious and filling.

The deep-fired salted prawns was probably my favourite dish. It was so delicious and crunchy. We did a number there with so many different dishes trying the gambit of what they had to offer.

I love the boat like bowls that are easy to serve. All the interesting, meaty sauces are great for rice and dipping. Deep-friend banana with ice cream is always an enjoyable desert. It hits the spot just right.

It was one of the more delicious, satisfying meals in a long time. You cannot go wrong with the Malaysian cuisine at Banana Leaf. However, it can get pricey.

First time checking out the Kits location, not too busy when we arrived around 12:30pm today, so we were able to take our time enjoying our food. We were the last ones to leave before their lunch operations closed (at 2:30) to re-open again at 5pm. Overall, the ambiance was very relaxing.

We ordered mainly from their lunch special menu - Roti Canai, Singapore Laksa, Satay Chicken and Gado-Gado with Rice, and Tiger Prawns with Gulai Sauce. And for dessert Mango Sticky Rice and Coconut Crepes. All this for two people - le'ts just say we were pretty satisfied by the end of lunch. =)

If it's your first time trying Malaysian food, I would recommend the Roti Canai (so fluffy! and with the curry sauce that it comes with...yum!) and Satay Chicken and Gado-Gado with Rice (unless you're allergic to peanuts, then don't get this since it comes with a peanut dressing). The Singapore Laksa is a noodle dish that comes in a coconut soup base - tasty, but I think it was a little bit too rich for my personal preference. The Tiger Prawns I give were a 3.5/5 - good, but I think my attention was too focused on the Roti and Satay chicken. =P

Now on to desserts. Between the Coconut Crepes (which are green, fyi) and the Mango Stick Rice, both of which are veryyy good, I'd have to say my vote is for the Coconut Crepes - these are served nice and warm with the stuffed shreddings inside giving it a nice texture. Give it a try!

Nice place, good atmosphere. Service was ok, but my watter went un-refilled the whole time. As for personal tastes, I did not like my Braised Lamb Shank too much. Had much better and juicier lambs in most other places in the past. We ordered the Sole fillet too, and neither of us liked it. We couldn't finish it.

Our final impression: a slightly above average look&feel, but otherwise a mediocre place with meh food.

    Worst take-out experience ever!

I came at 4:50; they open at 5. I tried knocking on the door, but got no reaction from the waiters, although we both could see each other. So I was about to leave, but, since I had already payed for parking, decided to wait...

So, for 10 minutes I was entertaining myself by reading the menu behind the glass, standing and waiting. At 5pm, I saw a hand unlock the door, but nobody even thought about inviting me in...

Well. Ok. Let's get in and ask for that thing I've selected while waiting.
    - Can I get side veggies?
    - No, you would have to get them separately.
    - Ok, I'll look at the menu then...

And while searching for a salad, I realize that the dish I was going to order is extra-spicy, while the menu outside said that it isn't.

At this point, I've had enough and just walked out.

So we were walking aimlessly one summer evening on Broadway, on a holiday, and most restaurants from Cambie onwards was closed, or looked kind of empty.

We stumbled upon Banana Leaf which looked bustling (we had already heard some pretty good reviews from our friends).  We were seated pretty quickly and I started off with a Tiger beer.

We started off with the Steamed Mussels in Ginger & Cumin Coconut Sauce.  The sauce was amazing... almost... too amazing.  In fact, it's almost unfair how amazing this dish is.

We then moved onto the Seafood & Chicken Fried Rice in Pineapple Boat  and the Eggplant in Dried Shrimp with Basil.  I highly recommend both of these.

The rice dish was flavorful with a garden of different seafood and pineapple.  And the eggplant dish worked really well with the rice.. the rice soaks up the sauce from the eggplant... and I'm pretty sure if you combine the two, you get Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

The price is fair and  I look forward to eating there again.

I LOVE Banana Leaf! They never disappoint me and I always leave happy with a tummy full of curry! Their dishes are fresh and tasty, and reasonably priced. I would recommend the Roti Canai appetizer - the roti is light and soft  and the curry dip is to die for! The atmosphere is also quite warm and fun.

I really had a one of a kind experience here!

First of all, the interior design. It was very authentic, the colours of the walls, the art hung on the walls, the plants and the music - all combined into a perfect ethnic blend. The waitresses all wore traditional aprons, too.

I strongly recommend that you do get rice. The dishes only come with meat/veggies, but you need rice for it to make sense. We ordered the appetizer sampler to share and it was great - although there were 3 people sharing a 2-people sampler, we made it work. I also recommend getting the fresh coconut drink that they bring in an actual coconut. It really helps to drink it when the food gets a little too spicy. The Malaysian bone-in chicken was great(very tender), and so was the kung pow one, the prawn dish was incredible also. I kept saying that it was like having a party in my mouth - so much flavour, it was almost shocking! The taste was almost edgy and I loved it. The fact that I don't usually succumb to spicy food might have contributed to that.

All in all, I had a great evening. When I decide to have Malaysian food again, I know it's gonna be this place that I'll come back to.

Also, we came about 1 hour before closing. They mentioned that we need to order asap, but at the same time we didn't feel rushed at all. The waiter came only when we were ready and when it was time to close, no one was urging us to finish sooner.

"Dont order the prawns," those were the first words I said when I walked in the door to my bf. The smell was subtle but I knew that smell, its bad prawns. Its hard to mistake when you've smelled it before. Anyways, regardless of my slight apprehension we sat down and were instantly man-handled by our server... ok not literally but the guy was not all that impressive. Two or three times my bf tried to hail him from our table for more water, or a dessert menu, or our check and he either blatantly ignored us or just didn't care that much.

The food wasn't bad, it was wednesday and it was obvious they were scraping the bottom of the bucket of their curry. It had been microwaved, you could tell by the texture I didn't fault them for it since the flavour was definitely there and tasty. The mussels were quite good, full of spice and wonderfull flavours, but only 1 piece of bread. Hm. Now I don't know about you but the sauce that mussels come in is just as good as teh mussels. So we ordered extra rice to pour it on and were happy with that.

Prices were ok. The coconut milk steamed rice was tasty and went perfectly with our choices, $2 for about a cup of rice... and mind you no rice comes with curry so you have to order it. The mussels and curry itself wasn't bad either, we didn't get drinks and our bill came to about $37. So we were fed, happy and walking around kitsilano quickly thereafter.

Not bad for a quick bite.

Banana Leaf at 3005 Broadway is a funky and unpretentious Malaysian restaurant, part of the delicious tapestry of Kitsilano's restaurant scene.

My first visit featured the Nonya's Lettuce Wrap with chicken. Full of flavour and very messy but politely accompanied by refresher towels.

For main we devoured the Kari Lamb and Tiger Prawns. The lamb was tender, mildly spiced and richly sauced. The prawns were fat and juicy served with chunky pieces of onion and tomato. I wasn't a huge fan of the sticky sauce - but a review earlier is, so each to their own.

For dessert we shared a serving of mango and coconut ice-cream. Totally not needed but well-enjoyed.

To top it off, a bottle of Oyster Bay Sav Blanc. I usually like to try the local wines, but was eating with an Australian friend so thought we'd treat ourselves to something by our NZ neighbours.

We headed home very full and happy with a box of leftovers under our arm.

We came here for my best friend's birthday. We had a table of 11 and we got the Prix Fixe Menu for $25 per person. We paid $32/person after tax and tip. Everything was delicious. The roti was flaky and hot. My boyfriend is not a very adventuous eater, but he tried and finished everything and went for seconds in some cases. His favourite was the Tiger Prawns in Singapore Chili Sauce. They were large prawns fried and covered in a thick ketchupy sauce. I liked the roti and the Rendang Beef. Everyone had plenty to eat and there was something to satisify even the pickiest eater.

Only one catch, both my boyfriend and I got sick after the meal. Since that was the only meal we shared that day, I could only attribute it to the restaurant. However, even with that snag, we gave it 4 stars!

I think a lot more foods would taste better presented in half a pineapple.
The front of the dining area has a giant safe.  What's in the safe?  Magic Treasure?  Servers who refuse to sing happy birthday to diners?  Diners who refuse to pay their bill?  Yelpers want to know.

The food is good so this review is purely from a monetary perspective.

While our main dishes were fine, the appetizer was definitely over-priced. We also felt they were rather stingy with the rice, even if they do wrap it in a banana leaf.

If I ever had to choose to eat something for the rest of my life I think I would have to choose the laksa soup at Banana Leaf. It is so damn good I have serious cravings for it on a regular basis. The value is phenomenal ($7 bowl!) and both the Malaysian and Singapore versions are equally heavenly.

Enough about the soup! Overall the decor and ambiance of Banana Leaf is great and service is usually friendly and efficient. I have not been there for dinner but it looks like they have a fairly substantial menu of Malaysian cuisine. If the laksa was not so tasty I would try more of it :)

What's happening to Banana Leaf? Once a restaurant I would recommend to anyone and everyone has gone downhill.

Came here for lunch on another beach-like day. Let's start with one positive. We walked in and were greeted by a cute, French waitress. For being a Malaysian restaurant I thought that was unique.

Ok, now straight to the food. We started with veggie spring rolls which were alright, but contained nothing vegtastic. Entree reviews:

    Singapore Laksa--below average, poor flavouring
Free-range Hainanese cold chicken--had to send it back as the cut of meat was terrible. Pretty much 95% skin, no meat, very small serving. Easily the worst we've ever tried.
    Curry Prawns--Soso flavour, small serving.

The saviour of the meal and this review from being a 1-star was the fried banana and ice cream dessert. That was perfectly done and was the only dish that was decent. Oh and that cute French waitress and the sunshine.

This is by far my favorite Malaysian restaurant in Vancouver, or anywhere for that matter. The restaurant is full of bright colours, with kites dangling from the ceiling and the wait staff dressed in semi-traditional outfits, which are just as colourful as the walls here.

It was pretty clean when I went, I'm not sure if this was before or after the public health hubbub. Things seemed pretty normal, even impressive, to me.

My favorite dish is the fried rice served in a pineapple half. How often is it that you can eat your food out of a pineapple? The satay -- chicken, beef, or pork -- is all good, smothered in delicious peanut sauce that will have you craving more.

Even my Malaysian boyfriend admitted this place wasn't too bad for fusion cuisine, and said it was way better than places like Tropika. And he's picky when it comes to restaurants! The food isn't as spicy as it probably would be in Malaysia, but then again, this isn't exactly Malaysia and not everybody has tastebuds that can withstand the powers of chili!

I love Malaysian food because of the Banana Leaf.  We had some mee goreng and mango chili prawns. Eggplant dish was really tasty! It was the perfect place to bring my mom and her friend for dinner.

Compared to the Broadway and Willow location, this place's decor is a bit fancier and swankier.  I would give it 5 stars, but it loses a star because I do find it a bit more expensive than it should be.

The newest of the Banana Leafs this one in particular has the better decor and ambiance. Very typical of a Kitsilano restaurant.

Service is solid and consistent with all their other locations and their dishes are equally prepared a well.

I found this joint far more sanitary and clean compared to their Broadway location which I've heard of random complaints of cleanliness from other friends who have visited.

I'd definitely give this location a chance.

After a long day of slogging in the rain and cold and through crazed hockey fans, my gf and I finally landed here. She decided we should try something different. Which was cool because while I like to try new things I sort of need to be pushed into doing it.

We both enjoyed our meal here very much (though the chairs were too high for me and I was uncomfortable.)

We did the 7 course tasting menu for 2:

The Roti Cani was super amazing. Mmmmmmmm!!!! Crisp and slightly sweet.

We also had a salad that had those weird field greens that I normally detest but I really enjoyed them. I think the dressing must have been made with magic or something.

The gf didn't like the vegetable spring rolls (she never does) but I did. They were good.

The chicken satay was good too.

The sambal green bean dish was our least favorite. We usually like dishes like this so that was a bit of a disappointment (but not enough to change the stars).

The rendang beef was very interesting and we both liked it.

But, what we both were in heaven over was the Abundance of Seafood in Gulai Sauce. That sauce was crazy monkey good!

And the fried banana and ice cream desert was great (though I was throwing caution to the wind as I am lactose intolerant).

I know we would definitely come back here again next time we are in Vancouver!

Nothing spectacular but I really enjoyed the decor here. If your reserved table isn't ready, there's a nice entrance area where your group can relax until you can be seated.

We were all happy with our dishes although service for our group of five was noticeably slow; I'll grant them it was Friday night. I had a few issues with our server who failed to offer any insight into the menu. Also, the uniforms for the wait staff have bare armpits. Thanks to horror stories I won't delve into here, the uncovered armpits plus serving food thing just doesn't sit well with me.

I haven't considered returning to Banana Leaf since. Once was enough for me to check it out and decide that, for me, it remains in the beleaguered mid-range pack of Vancouver restaurants.

Part of me feels bad for the poor Banana Leaf. It's carrying the bad , widely known reputation of uncleanliness that it's other branch has. It took some convincing of friends even when a pal of mine wanted to go. I wasn't 100% convinced myself as I stepped in. But, at least, I can say as far as I saw it definitely doesn't seem like it'll be shut down by any health inspectors any time soon.
As for the food? meh. I don't know if it's Malaysian cuisine in general as I've never really been expose to it before, or if I personally had a bland batch but it just didn't tickle my fancy. From the menu I expected something a lot more spicy and exotic tasting but what I got was pretty mediocre.
If you love Malaysian cuisine it's probably worth a try and definitely don't let other people's health concerns drive you away but as for just a general culinary experience, I've had MUCH better.

The food is always consistently well made! My favorite is the naan to start the fish and lamb stew for lunch and the spring rolls are great too! The veggies with the lamb gets overcooked! Otherwise yummo!

One of my all-time favorite restaurants in Vancouver.  The roti canai is fantastic (though I would ask for extra dal as the amount they give you is a little on the light side), the satays are the best I've had, and their sambal green beans, sambal prawns, and especially the fried rice served in a pineapple are outstanding.  Nice decor and good service as well, highly recommend it.

Yay for eating in Vancouver! You can see the good nutrition on the fresh faces of this city's residents.. people all look like they've just come out of a Tide commercial or something.. vibrant.. and the reason in my humble opinion is constant access to organic and locally sourced foods. This restaurant is no exception. Right on Broadway and easy access, plus open on Sundays which little is in that more business oriented part of the city, this spot bustles. The decor as mentioned is bright and inviting, the lunch specials are CHEAP and the repas all fresh and easy to customize. I love the Malaysian flavors, nice curries and plenty of egg and fish.. If you're in the area, I wouldn't miss this spot, but then again you're in Vancouver so almost anywhere you duck in, you'll find enticing local eats that keep the engine on high-functioning.

Ambiance is lively and service is great and friendly, but food was average. The satays were tiny and the chicken was low quality with lots of fatty parts - almost seemed deep fried.  The hot and sour soup was forgettable.  Urban Thai's in Yaletown is a million times better. The curry was good but hey it's curry how can it not be good?  I would not return to this restaurant unless I was forced.  Thank you.

To be completely honest, I've been to Banana Leaf 5 times and the first 4 times I'd say 4 stars...but we went last week and I have to say that I wasn't that impressed at ALL...

We asked for a table for 2 at 6pm - they said they could seat us if we thought that we'd be out by 8pm...no problem.

Service was good, fast, we ate and left within 30 minutes...

It was when I was eating my left-overs the next day that made me drop them from 4 stars to 2...I found a veggie sticker in my food - GROSS...did they not see the sticker when they 'washed' the veggies or did they just think that the sticy would add some flavour to the meal?

Either way, it was too late for me to send it back, but left me with a disappointed feeling and I'm not too sure when I'll be back.

Highly recommend this restaurant over the one near Broadway and Oak. This restaurant has much better ambiance and more spacious. Aside from the good food, there's patio seating outside. And cushy booths near the back of the restaurant.

If you're going with a party of 6, I'd suggest that you ask for a booth, but just not the last one near the kitchen (a bit too noisy).

Hope this helps anyone who is considering booking this place for a party/gathering.

Good Malaysian food but the portions are a little too small for the price you're paying. Not the best value, but there aren't many places for Malaysian style food in Vancouver. I feel that this restaurant is a bit cramped, but otherwise the service is decent.

Just did a lunch a Banana Leaf ... it was still fine, but not quite as good as before ... even the roti was not as I-just-can't-help-myself tasty as usual ... please, Banana Leafers, let it just have been a bad day.  You're still my favorite sit-down lunch near VGH.
