Bala's not like big cities (blessedly) for many, many reasons, not the least of which is everyone travels everywhere by boat. Grocery store, liquor store, grabbing some lunch, shopping for Muskoka sweats, you name it -- all the stores have public docks. This is a fabulous break from the normal rat race buuuuuuut, if you don't know what you're doing it can get ugly...
When one of us [not me, woooot!] ran our boat's prop over an underwater boulder outside our boathouse (it's only been in the same spot for the 100 years the fam's been coming up, but who can remember these things?), we were desperately in need of a repair stat. Bala Cove Marina is one of the few marinas on Lake Muskoka that actually does on-site repairs through their on-site mechanic. Not only do they provide this crucial service, we were able to get in right away without an appointment. We managed to limp the boat over and then waited as the mechanic did repairs right away while we watched. Which was honestly riveting...and I liked that he didn't mind my breathing down his neck with fascination.
You can also gas up the boat, buy a new one, pick up a lakes map, snag a water trampoline, or get a Nutty Buddy (Cadbury Canadian version obviously). Really nice people here providing much-needed services for the lakes.Listed in: My Muskoka, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
