Checked out the Baker's Market today at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre. It's open on Saturdays from 11am-3pm from October 1 - December 10. Closed October 22 & November 19.
Admission is only $1 with the proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. There were also quite a lot of the desserts sold had partial or full proceeds going towards the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as well!
Lots of desserts of all kinds, to name a few - lemon basil chocolate, peppermint brownies, caramel crisp cookies, blueberry scones, and all kinds of macaroons! :) -

There's nothing to NOT LOVE about the Bakers Market. Amazing finds every time, and free samples abound. My calorie count today went out the window, for sure. Foodie or not, this place introduces you to flavours your tongue hasn't tasted and your mind hasn't thought of yet. Case in point: Chili Chocolate Macaron from Kawaii Eats and Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip cookie from CookieVonster today. Do I really need to say more?
Ok I will. I was a huge fan of their former location in the Olympic Village, airy, bright, cheerful, shiny. Their current location at Moberly is closer to us now, but it's like slumming it by comparison. I swear when I perused the bathroom at Moberly today, it smelled like high school...and I went to high school in the 90s. Also reminiscent of the smell of old church pews that's regularly filled by old people (no offense to old people). Good thing is, the smell of the place does not affect the yumminess of the treats within. Street parking is free but it can get cramped at times since it's situated right in the middle of a neighbourhood.
Some of my favorite people at the market:
1. Kawaii Eats - sesame paste, matcha yuzu, chili chocolate, pumpkin macarons. I could not f-ing believe these were made in her home kitchen. I asked myself why I'm not churning out these delights in MY kitchen and wanted to kick myself.
2. Chef Wanda - ginger cookes, lavender vanilla shortbread and Ecstasy cookies. If you're on a quest to find the chocolatiest cookie ever, it's over with the Ecstasy cookie.
3. CookieVonster - my new discovery today. They had a selection of crispy cookies in out-of-this-world, alien flavours.
4. French Made Baking - amazing macarons and canele de bordeaux, every time.
5. There used to be an artisan marshmallow maker in there, whose name I cannot remember but whose products I can't forget... I haven't seen her lately. If you're in a frou-frou mode for the holidays, smoke her out for these decadent artisan mallows and impress your guests with your good taste. Then message me and let me know where to find her. -

The concept of the Baker's Market is similar to that of EAT Vancouver, but on a much smaller and local scale. Don't let the size of the venue or the number of vendors fool you. Just because these vendors/bakers are not so well known and some may not even have store fronts, rest assured the quality of these baked goods are not compromised in any way.
I had the opportunity to sample some amazing delights including lavender short bread, chocolate chip cookies, cup cakes, waffle, vegan energy bars, fruit pies, cake lollipops, chocolate squares, almond biscotti, macarons and more macarons. The highlights for me were the cupcakes and macaroons.
I love cakes, but I find cupcakes appalling. These pretty things lack depth and substance. A standard cupcake is dry in texture, usually (low quality) vanilla or chocolate flavored, and slathered on with sugary icing. Even cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery in New York (featured in Sex and the City) taste no different than the bad ones I have had... until I tried the ones at the Baker's Market.
I had a sample of chocolate cupcake with green tea icing and I was sold. I can taste real chocolate in moist soft cake. Furthermore I can taste the green tea in the icing! The cupcake is a perfect 10. How can macaroons top the cupcakes you may ask? The answer is - creativity.
One macaroon vendor, inspired by her Japanese heritage, jazzed up her own version of plumped medallions with black sesame and red bean paste. To glamorize them, she hand-decorated the surface with icing of various colors in the shape of blossom trees and Chinese characters such as winter. She even made macaroons in the shape of hello kitty (on a stick)!
Overall, I was very impressed by the vendors showcased at the Baker's Market. I think this event is an excellent way to promote, support, and encourage our local bakers. This weekly event is held at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre in Vancouver on Saturdays from October 1 to December 10. Do check it out. You'll regret it if you didn't.Listed in: Baked Goods/Sweets

Coming for the start of the 2011 "Bakers Market" I wanted to see what this was all about, noticing that Yelp was also a sponsor of this definitely raised my curiosity. I was not too sure where this was, but when I saw a whole bunch of cars parked around a park with a little building I kinda figured I as in the right place, it may be small in there, but if you have cash on you, and a craving of baked goods, you are "F'd" (in a good way!).
Once you enter the doors, you hear the bustle of people walking around talking with the local bakers on their own passionate products and getting a good sample at every table. Pies, breads, chocolates, caramel, just to name a few entered my mouth and down the hatch. There were times I saw my partner reach for some money thinking of purchasing this item and that item, and then another sample went into her mouth.
It may be advised to come here on a full stomach, cause if you come here with a full wallet and an empty stomach, game over wallet! But it is refreshing to see all these local bakers come out and show their gems that you get to try and take home and also know where to order. I will be coming back, and this year it goes all the way to December! -

Yay! They expanded the Baker's market! That makes it soooo much better!
Firstly, I went to support Vancouver Yelp's very own Rachael T.'s baking endeavours and bought a couple macarons. OMFG! I just ate them both as soon as I got home and they're fantastic!! So were the salted chocolate cookies!
The other OMFG moment I had was the moment I put a morsel of maple marshmallow in my mouth! This was made by Kimberly's Kitchen. She also threw in a smore and little chocolate halloween cookies for free!
The Gluten Shmuten booth was cool. I was impressed with the flourless brownies. They weren't quite a torte.. definitely brownies. But no flour. Just pure cocoa, egg, margarine (to be dairy free i assume), sugar, and chocolate chips. My gf friend bought some banana bread from there.
The last booth I visited was the Desserted Sin booth. I didn't buy anything because I had enough sweets and theirs were more fancy. But I did try the pear tart sample and it was amazing! If I needed some desserts for a dinner, I would have totally picked some up. And also took a business card incase I need a cake to be made in the future. They're an online bakery business!
That's the end of my Baker's market visit. Again, I think they could also expand to include sales of items to make baked goods with like unique sprinkles, muffin paper cups, piping bags..?Listed in: Best Desserts in Vancouver, Yelpage

It was a bit difficult to find but finally found the sign that pointed us in the right direction. I hope they will have a larger sign made next year just for first timers.
The baked goods are super yummy :D I have to go back to get more! The vendors were very friendly. The tables were nicely and professionally decorated.
Give them a try! There seems to be something for everyone :) -

What has sugar and spice and everything nice? Aw shucks, thanks! But what I was really thinking of was the Bakers Market! :)
I went to visit it today for the first time, and am eating some delicious peppermint marshmallows as I write this. While it's pretty far for those who are just walking, Creekside Community Centre is great for anyone biking or driving over. Still I would've liked a location more transit-friendly.
I love that many of the booths have samples for you to try their stuff. While it's all home-made things, I still think $2 for 3 cookies without getting to try any of them is steep. But once I sampled that chocolate peppermint cookie, I was sold! Since it's Christmas time, there seem to be an awful lot of peppermint goods, as well as a few egg nog items (I bought some egg nog macarons), but there is everything from pies to tarts to breads to chocolates that if you like sweet stuff, you'll probably find something for yourself here.
The best part about this market is that it gives the community a chance to find out more about some local bakers that I've never heard of. Some of them are even so popular that they were sold out by the time I got there and taking orders for next week!
If you've never been and you love sweets, I suggest you give it a try. It was a great experience, and I'm hoping these sweets I bought will last me at least two days. But they're pretty good, so I'm fairly certain they'll all be gone by tomorrow..... -

A brand new location within the Creekside Community Center, right by the water!! A much nicer and new location. Lots of free parking around.
I was surprised and how 'gourmet' the vendors are. Beautiful packaging, fancy ingredients, and items weren't cheap. Apple tarts, gingersnap cookies, flavoured marshmallows...there was simply too many choices available for me to narrow down the items. Lots of gluten-free items as well.
Many samples were given out, and lots of vendors were offering 'boxed' packaging. It's perfect for a simple gift!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Just came from here after lunch and even though I was full I couldn't resist trying the delicious looking treats. I applaud the participants of this event for making it all the way to bring their baked goodies to this venue. It feels pretty far away from civilization to be noticed at all except by foodies scouring Vancouver for good eats.
There's a home-made sign, no banner, to help you find your way. Kinda. Then when you reach the place, it's pretty small and can get crowded fast.
With that said, I enjoyed it very much doing the rounds and being wooed by the samples. Remember - CASH ONLY - so make sure to bring enough to help you go through the temptation.
All of them have calling cards and most have web sites so you can refer back to them for re-orders and special events.
Fun, friendly people helping each other out and I am definitely looking forward to going back perhaps next weekend to see what new items they can concoct.Listed in: C.O.V. (Cash Only Vancouver)

I was expecting a lot more tables and variety in product offering. The market was small and very cramped. There wasn't a lot of room to move around in and there were so many people. I feel like almost anyone could have signed up for a table. Being a baker, many of the product offers weren't all that different than things that I could make myself at home.
Signage to the market was lacking, especially since it is in a warehouse (almost) in the middle of nowhere. There is also limited parking depending on when you go. We didn't have a problem parking, but cars arriving when we were leaving didn't have spots. -

I want to give it 5 stars, but the advantages gained by moving it to the new athletes village location are almost negated by the new crowds it brings in - at least from my perspective as a mildly disabled shopper.
That said, I DO enjoy this market. I am a pretty accomplished baker myself, but it's nice to let others do the work sometimes! My latest trip last Saturday netted me marshmallows, macarons, sweet and savory shortbreads, balsamic onion marmalade and more.
It's a great experience - if only ginormous strollers weren't allowed! *grin*
