Bacalao is expensive, but I think it is worth it.  It looks like an old house that was converted into a expensive restaurant.  I ordered the Vegetarian Savoury Gnocchi, and it was exellent.  Tasted well, and the service was wonderful. I highly recommened it to check this place out if you are in St. John's and if you can afford it.

I wanted to love this place, and I won't deny that the food was good.
Local ingredients, friendly service, all the pieces were there, but it just never really came together for me.
If you're an oenophile, you'll be happy - the cellar is impressive! And they do neat things with traditional ingredients! And make a mean cheese plate.
    And yet.
I don't know. Perhaps it was that it was hot and noisy in there. Perhaps it was the out-of-season veg. Perhaps I was just tired. Perhaps I'd built it up too much in my mind.
But there you go. Solid. Not amazing.

The good: Hot, freshly prepared food. Got a complimentary moose starter from the chef. The waiter was quite friendly.

The bad: Sitting is a bit of a tight squeeze. My halibut could have used a bit more spice

This is still a good place to get a feel for Newfoundland foods

My husband and I were fortunate to dine at Bacalao's twice during our visit to St. John's. The first thing that we noticed was the innovative menu and we wondered if the dining experience could live up to the description of the restaurant - Nouvelle Newfoundland Cuisine. No worries there! This restaurant does a wonderful job of showcasing fresh products from Newfoundland in a creative and upscale way. Our menu choices included the Brie & Partidgeberry Phyllo Cigars, the Bacalao Fritters, the Crispy Skin Savoury Chicken Breast, and the featured Salt Cod dish. Everything was very tasty and enjoyable. Kudos to the chef! This was a great dining experience from start to finish.

The food was great - I ordered salted cod and I normally don't order fish because I always end up with food envy of the person eating steak, but it was really good.   We had appetizers and cheese and port for dessert and it was a really nice meal and a great experience.

Service was good - could have been a little warmer but still good.

    I would go back again.

I visited a while back, but NL is new to Yelp so felt obligated to put the first review here.

This restaurant was fascinating:  a nouvelle take on traditional Newfoundland food.  I went in for dinner and started out with the eponymous bacalao (salt cod).  In this case, a nouvelle take on the traditional Newfoundland salt-cod fritters.  Very tasty, and a different angle from the more traditional fritters I had at The Ship pub.

For the main course I had caribou steak with a sauce made of local berries and Barrens Blend wine.  Great flavour, well prepared, and a very innovative sauce.  I hope to go back again on a vacation this year, but wanted to at least get this restaurant on the Yelp "map" in the meantime.

I wanted to love love love this place. It's very cute, cozy and the menu sounds fabulous, updated twists on traditional Newfie food. But, alas, it was not meant to be :( Started with the Jiggs dinner cabbage roll, on a dollop of pease pudding and a shot of pot liquor. OK...that one was good. Presentation was excellent, the cabbage itself was slightly undercooked so it was pretty messy eating but all in all very playful and flavourful. My bf tried the cod au gratin (app) it too was pretty tasty, rich and creamy. My brother ordered the mussells and must say they we good in a slightly spicy broth...nice :) Unfortunetly thats were all the goodness stopped for me. I ordered the seafood pot pie...and it was really awful. The sauce was floury and doughy, the "pie" was what tasted like a few day old "flaky" roll...it was far too dry and flavourless instead of crispy and buttery like it should have been. A can of cream of mushroom soup would have been better mixed into it. My bf tried the halibut special with a miso butterscotch glaze. The halibut was a sizable piece but had been overcooked by several minutes...a true shame as it could have been lovely. My brother tried the salt cod of the day, which was in a thai red curry sauce. It too may have been good but seriously you could tatse almost nothing over the salt. I would think that its a pretty easy to get the desalting time out for the cod. So many changes of water over so many days...pretty straight forward. I LOVE salt but his dish was completely inedible to me...but he mustered through it with lots of wine and water. Our server, Andi, was very sweet but perhaps not so knowledgeable. When my uncle asked for scotch and soda she asked what kind of soda. We had several bottles of wine...that i had to go around and pour for everyone as once the first glass was poured we were left to ourselves. The desserts were meh, nothing stood out except the "creme brulle" which was not creme brulle at all...just some really bad runny pudding like thing...not good. This place has potential...but I doubt I will be back and I can't recommend.
