5 reviews for Babycake Cupcakes

Wandering around looking for Babycake Cupcakes was an effort in futility. Note: it's *inside* Lil' Baci. Ahem.
I went on a Saturday and I lucked out -- they had three (3) cupcakes of varying flavours left! I ended up with a Cookies'n'Cream, Velvet Underground, and Peanut Butter Cup (due to the fact that some poor soul was allergic to nuts and had to "return" it). Every flavour was amazing, but the Peanut Butter was my absolute favourite! It's nice to have a variety of flavours besides plain 'ol chocolate and vanilla every once in a while.
The guy who helped me was super nice and even took a trip down to the basement to ensure they didn't have any other flavours there.
My number two favourite cupcake place in T.O.!

Thanks to Carmen M for the tip on the location. I was wandering along Queen St and the sign for cupcakes caught my eye. Looked up and I was outside Lil' Baci. I took the semi-accidental stumbling upon it as a sign to go get some so popped inside.
They had a little stand with a few cupcakes on it and the guy cheerfully went through the flavours. Despite it being Saturday afternoon they still had a few left...with more flavours downstairs. I was offered peanut butter/chocolate, chocolate with vanilla frosting, vanilla/vanilla, chocolate/chocolate, coconut, raspberry, chocolate mint and possibly more. My brain takes in 7 items max! After staring at him in a state of mute indecision for a few minutes (I wanted them all!), I decided on chocolate vanilla and peanut butter. My lovely guy ran downstairs and came back with a cute little box stamped with "Babycake cupcakes"-perfect size for 2. The guy who handed me my minis on a napkin in Miss Cora's should take note. They were pricey at $7.50 (incl tax) or so for two...but not too bad for a treat!
Not so sure about the choc-vanilla...could get a slight taste of mint from it. Maybe it was near the mint ones? Regardless the bun was excellent and the frosting was good. Peanut butter chocolate was also very tasty with a lovely fresh bun-the perfect blend of soft and crumbly without a hint of dryness. Frosting tended more to the sugary than the creamy (I like them a little more indulgent) but was good nevertheless. They're kind of a perfect size too-not so big that eating one inflicts nausea and/or a sugar coma but not so small that you feel deprived!
Not the absolutely best cupcakes I've had but a solid 4 star. I'll take the hit for Yelp and keep sampling the other flavours, martyr that I am!
If you want cupcake variety, you've gotta make Babycake Cupcakes your jam. They've got over a dozen types of cupcakes with sassy names like "Velvet Underground", "Thumper's Odyssey", "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Lemony Snickets." No plain vanilla or chocolate cupcakes here - they've taken the art of cupcakery to the next level with flavours like mango, mint, pumpkin, lemon, peanut butter, cardamom and marshmallow.
Cupcakes are baked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays so check in on one of those days for optimal freshness. They're $3.25, so by no means cheap, but for the inventive flavour combinations I'd consider it a bargain.
I sampled two cupcakes:
* "Punk'd" - pumpkin with cream cheese frosting. There was a beautiful orange pumpkin fondant cutout on top of the cupcake and it was the perfect size. This was by far one of the best cupcakes I've tasted and I wouldn't hesitate to order a batch for a special occasion.
* "Blue By You" - chocolate cake with peppermint frosting. I *love* dark chocolate and eat it whenever I can get my hands on it (which is always) and this cupcake satisfied my craving for both mint and chocolate, combined. There was a beautiful fondant star on top and the icing was a vibrant robin's egg blue. Decadent!

As delicious as they are adorable, these cupcakes are one of my favourites in the city. Every flavour I've tried has been amazing, but nothing tops the "One Love" cupcake with its perfect mango cake topped with perfect mango frosting. NUM.
Be aware that these cuppies aren't cheap though: they go for $3.25 a pop. Also, to get at these little treats you actually have to go into their parent restaurant, Lil'Baci, which is right next door. Just tell them that you're there for the cupcakes and they'll show you the goods. ;)

Dear Babycake,
When I looked at your menu, you overwhelmed me! There were so many good choices that it was hard to pick just one. But a decision had to be made and I picked 'One Love', a mango cake with mango icing. Your cake was dense and thick and little chunks of mango found its way into the crevices of my teeth. I should have brought some floss. I wish I could have eaten you with some milk also!
Thank you for all your wonderful flavors, I shall be back to try more!
Love,
Dreamsrey
