    Baan Thai is great!

Went there a couple of nights ago, after finding out Kim's Vietnamese was closed.
Great location, great atmosphere. It's nice an cozy.

Tried the 48 (prawn curry). It was SO SO SO good. When they bought out the bowl, I was kind of worried because it looked a bit small, and I was STARVING. But I ended up being really full after so that was great. The servers were friendly. I've been there once before (it was also excellent) and I would definitely go back again.

I'm traveling through Victoria and this is my 2nd to last night and frankly I was craving curry. I yelp to see and then realize I left my phone at the hotel and I'm lost but I see Baan Thai on this side. Shrugging I walked in.

The pricing is a bit much but I can handle it. The thing that mostly got me mad was the fact they charge for tea and rice. I can understand EXTRA rice but with curry, you kinda need rice. Unless you intend to drink it, which then it would be curry soup and not just curry. (i digress)

I got my food and it was good for the first two bites and the longer I thought about it (I was eating slow because I was writing in my journal at the time) I realized there was a deviation from the normal curry I have had back at home in the Bay Area. It was salty, like really salty.

There was good coconut milk flavor which wrapped me in its warm caress and comfort, the bamboo shoots are my absolute favorite so forgive me when I say I indulged in them. The chicken was ok, obviously boiled chicken to soak in the curry, a bit more dry than I'd wanted but it is chicken. The only saving grace of the meal was the bell peppers because they don't absorb curry that quick, so I had to alternate between eating a few spoonfuls and chewing on a bell pepper slice.

The service was great! They stopped by and checked in with me enough to see how I was doing and enough to not badger me while I was brainstorming.

Oh yeah the $2.50 for tea is just ridiculous. It's tea... we are in Victoria... it there was a lack of supply I could understand... but again... sigh.

Passing through Victoria, we decided to look for a Thai restaurant. We checked out a few on Yelp and decided on Baan Thai.

It was an excellent choice too!

Baan Thai is small (about 45 seats) and you may have to wait for a seat, but hang in there. The night we were there only 2 young ladies were working the floor, but they could really hustle.

The food was excellent (we had 54 & 58), just not as spicy as we usually get at our hometown favorite, so would suggest asking for the condiment tray.

Service was cheerful, price reasonable considering exchange value and the meal delicious. I would definitely go there again!

I hate being harsh, but when the top-rated Thai place in downtown turns out to be a bust, I think people deserve to know.

My coworkers asked if I wanted to go to dinner at Baan Thai straight from the office. I even skipped working out altogether -- mostly because I was so excited to try this place out.

    PROS:
+ Spice: pretty much all options from appetizers to entrees can be cooked according to a level of spice that's listed on the menu
+ Beers: Thai beers and even Singaporean beers
+ Pad Thai: the super commercialized dish remains true to form here with fresh vegetables and is spiced properly -- the dish is not overtly sweet, salty or sauced

    CONS:
    - Soups: out of the regular tom yum soup, and the tom yum with coconut milk was so watery, I passed
    - Red Snapper: the only entree item that wasn't shrimp-based, I kid you not, it was like fish and chips (no chips) slathered with sweet and sour sauce.. very disappointing
    - Penang Curry: since when was curry served on a flat plate? Sharing this was incredibly difficult, and the amount of curry was paltry

Between this Thai restaurant and Thai Siam a couple blocks away, I would say I'm still not satisfied. Blame random places like Chicago and Atlanta for providing me with fresh and authentic Thai dishes, but Baan Thai is really just middle of the road.

Come here for a dinner to share with a group, but don't be disappointed that a dish that sounds great on paper turns out to be goop.

The best Thai in downtown Victoria.

Oh - and order the spring rolls.  Maybe just make a meal of them. :P

We were wandering around downtown Victoria, just absolutely starving, and craving Thai food. We kept thinking, "I know I saw a Thai restaurant around here somewhere" but we couldn't figure out what street it was on. We'd just given up when we turned left on Blanshard and it was like one of those moments in movies when a ray of sun is shining right directly on the object of your quest.

The food was served quickly and very very yummy. It definitley hit the spot. We had the spring rolls for appetizer, Phad Prig Phao Gai, and Guay Teow Phad Ped. YUM!

Sometimes I have to eat here just because of the enticing aromas that waft out of their kitchen. Baan Thai is my neighbour. My dozens upon dozens of visits have concluded that Baan Thai is the best Thai restaurant in Victoria. This hasn't always been the case. When Sookjai first opened up and they had Thai Mike making their curries I would've eaten their panang gai for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unfortunately he left and consequently they went downhill, but still charged more than everywhere else.

Baan Thai is no wizard with the curries, but I give them a shot every now and then and they're tasty enough. Sadly there is nowhere in Victoria to get a good and proper rich, delicious panang anymore.

Where Baan Thai excels is, well, pretty much everywhere else. Their porpya and cashew chicken are consistently delicious. They've always had the best phad Thai goong in town. Prices are on not bad either, running at around $13 for main courses.

I've taken many friends here and these friends have subsequently gone back on their own accord. To me that says quite a bit. Service is always consistent, when I do eat in, but like any good restaurant expect lineups. Almost every time I'm picking up my takeout, I'm squishing through a hoard of hungry people. If you're trying Baan Thai for the first time my best advice would be to go with a few people and share a variety of dishes.

One of the best Thai restaurant's I have ever set foot in. I wasn't really that hungry until my girlfriend and I stepped inside and took a seat. The restaurant smells delicious enough to eat. I debated tasting the walls to make sure I didn't walk into a Thai gingerbread house. But I thankfully contained myself until our appetizer came.

My girlfriend and I ordered Tom Yum Goong. It was amazing. We asked for it to be spicy and the combination of citrus and heat was so complex. I wanted to order more broth just to drink.

We also ordered Pad Thai Gai one of our favorite dishes. I tend to try it at every restaurant that services it just to compare. This was the best I have ever had. Rice noodles flash fried to perfection with moist flavorful chicken, extra firm tofu, salted radish, tamarind, oyster sauce, egg, green onions and fresh bean sprouts topped with roasted ground peanuts and spiced with chili. So often the eggs or chicken is over cooked or all together missing. Not the case here. The perfect amount of protein on my plate. The radish was a great touch I am not used to. The highlight of the dish was the sauce. It was the best I have ever had I just wish I didn't have to drive three hours and take a ferry to get it. I may have to apply for Canadian citizenship.

    Great for lunch.

They have an array of lunch specials with spring rolls and soup for about 10 bucks.  My favourite is the Red Curry chicken on rice.

Service is cheerful.  The food is fresh and very consistent.

Greater than the sum of its parts

I'm impressed. I just wish that their menu featured an entirely vegetarian Massaman Curry

We began with spring rolls, which were fried perfectly and surprisingly not greasily.

Pad Thai was full of peanutty flavor and a vegetable dish we tried had a nice ginger zing.

Baan Thai really knows how to spice its vegetarian dishes well.

After asking around and searching yelp for a good Thai restaurant in Victoria, we made our way to Baan Thai. If this is the best Thai Victoria has to offer, I feel bad for the people who live here and haven't experienced just how awesome it can be! Don't get me wrong, the food was fine and the service was really good, its just that a few elements are missing to make this place amazing.

We tried the tom ka gai soup, the panang curry, and noodle dish (I'm blanking on the name). They all could have used a kick in flavor and spice. Also, I prefer my curry with something else besides just chicken and bamboo shoots -- include veggies people! Overall, it didn't blow me away but I wasn't utterly disappointed.

Victoria is not known for epic ethnic food but this place is fine for a dinner out on a week night with friends. The service is pretty good and they have quite a few familiar dishes on the menu. I didn't find anything to be spicy enough or quite "there" in terms of flavour but it's not bland and not necessarily bad. I have to agree with Jason L., it's just not quite what I'd choose for a top rated Thai place.

For Thai food in Canada.  It is one of the best.  It is just average Thai food.  Extra hit is still mild compared to Thailand. But still for canada it great.  Very good service, friendly and quick.

Not really knowing much about Thai food, I was somewhat aprehensive trying this restaurant out. I'm glad I decided to gamble. I'm not sure how authentic the dishes were... but I can tell you what I was served will bring me back for more. Worth the drive. The decor, service, and food are all of a high enough standard to add this restaurant to my usual routine,

I've frequented baan thai for dinner twice and lunch a few times. I've found the service generally excellent, last time I was in there was one tattoo'd girl working almost every single table during a busy lunch rush and she kept right up, I was impressed. The food is definitely above the average thai food in Victoria, but I've never been blown away by anything. That said, I've never been really disappointed either. The flavours are there, but I don't find that they really jump out and grab you (I'm not even talking about spice, although the "hot" phad thai that i ordered was a warm mild at best). I'd recommend Baan Thai for reliable, decent and pretty fresh thai food.

Adequate, but not great.  BBQ chicken was interesting. Satay and pad thai were too peanut-ty for our tastes. Fried rice was greasy. No stickey rice?  What's that about??  Service was slow and it took forever to get our check.

This is great, consistent Thai - used to order it at least once a week and the service is as good as the food. Always like the Pad Gao or whatever it was. Good.....mmmmm makes me want to go there just talking about it.
