Review from Theo C.
Toronto, ON
For many Toronto inhabitants of a certain vintage, the words "Royal Conservatory" strike cold fear into their hearts. Theo well remembers childhood piano exams when trembling fingers could not locate Middle C, while the right hand and the left hand would suddenly decide to part company and pursue independent paths through the musical score.
So Theo was very glad to come back to the Conservatory years later with no worries other than not finding a seat at b espresso bar, which is fairly small. Tables are a bit close for comfort, but you'll be too busy admiring the the soaring high ceilings and old-bricks-meets-new-glass of KPMB's thoughtful addition to the old Conservatory building to be bothered by your neighbours...
...Who may well not be music students. An older clientele also drops in, especially for pre-concert bites. The food is not hamburgery student fare and the prices are certainly not student prices. The selection is mainly wraps and sandwiches, with a few salads and baked goods; a recent meal included a tasty, although not exceptional, frittata.
Food aside, the coffee bean is b's focus, and the brewed coffee and cappuccinos are good and strong and carefully made. (Can't remember whether it's fair-trade.) In summer, take your snack out to one of the café tables, or a bench in nearby leafy Philosopher's Walk. In winter, sit at your clean modern white table and lean back in your clean modern white chair, sip your espresso and relax. And pity the poor trembling students walking by en route to their piano exams. -
Review from Robert K.
Though not visible from the street, there is a coffee place in the atrium of the new addition to the Royal Conservatory. It's a fairly pleasant space with lots of seating. The coffee is OK, though nothing to write home about. It's not a bad choice, if you're looking for coffee on the U of T campus. Unsurprisingly, the place is full of music students.

Review from Mark H.
What a nice open little cafe located in the beautiful addition to the conservatory! It's a nice setting, the coffee is pretty good, served in real cups, and I had an excellent chocolate zucchini bread. Friendly servers, too. I wish the conservatory that I went to had had such a cafe on-site...
