I learned about Avocado via the wonderful world wide web while searching for avocado recipes with my girlfriend one night. She really loves guacamole and anything Mexican related, so we decided to make it a date night.
We figured we may have found "our spot" however it was highly disappointing. We had sat down and right away the waiter came up and took our drink orders, however it took nearly 15 minutes to get said drinks. (2 pints of Keiths). My partners food was incorrect, with her being lactose intolerant she is unable to eat cheese. There was actually extra cheese put on the food. Not good.
The dessert was OK, however it was apparent that the churros were not home made and were merely heated up in the microwave before being thrown hatefully on the plate.
Maybe the restaurant was having a bad day in general, but I cannot recommend it at all. -

Avocado is a Western Canadian chain of upscale Mexican restaurants that take a fresh and original spin on the cuisine. You won't find your typical nachos and enchiladas here. Instead, you will find about a dozen different kinds of burritos, all made in house with very fresh ingredients.
I had a grilled chicken burrito, and although it was packed with delicious, grilled chicken breast, I was not uncomfortably bloated as I often am after eating Mexican food (a major reason why I tend to avoid it). There was just enough refried beans, guacamole, and rice to keep things interesting, with a splash of salsa. I asked for mild, and it actually was - sometimes mild simply means my mouth will be numb for only half of the afternoon, but in this case, it added flavour without too much heat. Having some issues with dairy, I asked for the sour cream to the side and no cheese - my sour cream was served in a tasty chip bowl, but the kitchen erred in that there was some cheese in the burrito - not a major tragedy, but something to be aware of for the future.
I chose shoestring fries as my side (other choices included sweet potato fries, homemade chips and salsa, or salad) and really enjoyed them. I don't usually get excited about fries but they were very tasty, and the obviously homemade ketchup was an added bonus.
My dining companion opted for an appetizer as his meal. The steak bites were wrapped in corn chip strips to add a crunch, and rubbed with spices to heat them up. Tender and juicy, they were a bit too spicy for my palette, but sure to be a winner with others. He ordered a side of shoestring potatoes and liked them as much as I did.
Burritos cost from $11-$15 depending on what kind (everything from vegetarian to AAA steak to pork) and come with a side. Other choices in that price range include a few sandwiches and tacos, and some entrees which get into the $20 range. There is also a full bar and all kinds of margaritas.
It's a bit pricey but if you like Mexican food you will love Avocado. -

Avocado's is now closed - guess my unpleasant experience was shared by others.
