I want to let you in on a secret but you need to promise not to keep it yourself.  It is important that you tell everyone!

Vancouver Island has some of the greatest vineyards and one of the best is right here in the Cowichan Lake region.

My first experience with Averill Creek wine was last winter at the Parksville food and wine festival. Little did I know I drive past their vineyard quite often as it is located up the street from Lake Cowichan where I live.  Once you take the turn onto their property you wind through the vineyards and this magnificent structure appears.  The main vineyard is beautifully landscaped with a wonderful area to picnic.  The big surprise is when you turn around from where you came onto the property the view is breath taking.  You have a clear view all the way to what I believe to be Cowichan Bay and beyond.  On this sunny day it was so inviting and showcased the winery in the best light.

Now lets get down to business...tasting...we enjoyed five different wines: two whites, two reds and a port. Each one getting better and better.  They have one of the best reds a 2007 Prevost.  They managed to get the best out of these grapes and produce a wine that can compete with some of the California wines I have come to know quite well.

So now you know my secret and I really hope this time you don't keep it to yourself.  The Cowichan Lake region of Vancouver Island is pretty special and Averill Creek Vineyards helps to make it that way!
