Can someone explain to me how an institute student can do a better job at highlights than professionals at salons? No?
So, quick background about my hair. My natural hair is your typical Asian black, straight hair. However, I recently dyed my hair dark red/burgundy. Using home dyes without bleach doesn't get you very far when you have black hair (also, I didn't exactly do the best job in the world. I still have some brown hair from a previous dye that I got done at a salon), so I wanted some highlights to have some brightness and I ended up at Aveda Institute because it's cheap. Most places charge at least $75 for partial highlights and the price with an institute student is $40! I originally was going to get an academy student, but they were all booked, but they had institute students available. I don't know if I was lucky, but the student I got was just awesome. Totally made the 4 hours worthwhile! I got red highlights along with toner. My hair was probably a student's worst nightmare. Black hair that has been home dyed and wants a color that's hard to do and fades faster than other colors. But oh my, she did absolutely a fantastic job. She also did a hand massage that was great while the color set. The reason why it took four hours was because the amount of time for the color to set and the toner to set as well thanks to my stubborn hair. I also got a bang trim since it was pretty long and covered my eyes and it was free, so I was happy. I paid $65 plus tax and tip for highlights and toner which was really really good. If you want to get your color done and you have a lot of time to kill, I totally recommend Aveda Institute. I might come back and do a perm there when my hair grows out more.Listed in: Beauty Stuff

Really fantastic find for keeping you looking gorgeous on a budget.
I dye my dark brown hair red so I need to go every 4-6 weeks for a root touchup which usually costs $80+ at salons but only costs $30 here with a student ($18 for hair cuts). I know my formula and they have an instructor double checking their work so I have no fear. Only downside is that they are learning so they are slower than a regular salon (took 2.5 hrs for consultation, color, wash and blowdry) but if you've got the time and have a simple color job, then save yourself 60%+ off a regular salon. They also do all the extras like hand massage while you wait for your color to set, head massage with your wash and makeup touchup after your blowdry.
Best part is they are convenient to get into with evening appointments for us working gals. I called yesterday morning and they got me in for a 5pm appointment the same day - how fantastic is that! -

I have never received more compliments on my hair since I started going to Aveda. Shallynn is a godness of all things colour - we change it up a bit every time and she has never disappointed me with her ideas or suggestions. I can't imagine letting anyone else touch my colour again.
My haircuts from Aveda are great too! I've had a few of the students cut it (under Tracy's supervision) and they've all been awesome. What they might lack in speed, they make up for in hand, shoulder and head massages, which in my opinion, are about as good as it gets. And the tea! You have to try the tea.
Aveda products are lovely, priced about the same as any salon, I would kill for one of their soy candles.
Thanks Aveda for never aggressively selling your products to me, for always looking fabulous and smiling, for putting out terrific grad students and the rest. I will be back again & again & again & again. -

I've been going to the academy for years. While it's somewhat hit and miss, it's still much better than regular salons where they only pretend to do what you want. And the worst I've had has never been too awful.
My only complaint is that I can rarely get more than one cut from a stylist whose work I love. They move on and disappear from sight.
The best parts are that the salon tries to understand what you want and the products are much less toxically-smelly than most.
My advice - Don't accept any beverage they offer you. I've been served tea with hair clippings in it and water in a glass ringed with lipstick. Much better to offer nothing than such 'refreshments'. -

I love going here for my hair cut. Marta, my stylist, is great. She listens to your requests and if you are unsure about the cut you want, she also gives her expert opinion.
I totally trust her with any type of hair. I'm asian and my hair is heavy and coarse but she knows how to work with it. Also, she gives great life advice and has even helped me in a crisis - one time I was on a mission for my fiancé's work christmas party. She rounded up the troops at the salon and gave me makeup tips as well!!
I highly recommend this salon.
Oh yea i got the students to do my colour job once, and they are awesome. I got excellent service and advice from both students and experienced professionals here!
(oh yea and you get free fringe trims for life!) -

I'm a huge fan of Aveda products and am always on the lookout for their institutes/academies in any city that I move to.
For about $25 you get a neck massage, shampoo, first class haircut, and styling ! The prices vary depending on whether its an academy student (about $35 - more experienced, only here for finishing) or an institute student (less experienced, and cheaper - about $25). At this location the institute students haven't started cutting hair yet, but they will in a few months.
All their products are natural and plant based. The hair dye cannot be bought in the stores and you have to go to an Aveda salon if you want to use that dye....and this can cost around $100+, but at the academy you can get the same results for $40 !!! (and they don't charge you extra for using more product )
I've had a haircut and color at this location (with an academy student) and am very pleased with both ! All the services are supervised and if you're not happy, the instructor will fix it for you, although I've never had that experience. This is like the harvard for hair schools, so everyone who's cutting here usually has experience working in salons before and they come here for finishing, so I trust them completely - despite their student status.
The only downside is, that because they're students cutting your hair, the whole process can take upto 2-2.5 hours. -

I went the Institute for hair colour and cut. An inexperienced student spent four hours with me with a lot of help from an instructor. I thought $54 for hair cut and colour was a pretty good deal, but given the time spent perhaps it is only fair.
