Ok, so I decided to join the "Going Green" Movement and do my part to save the Environment...first move on my agenda Sell my car.
Ok...thats what I've been telling people, but truth is....owning a car during this mini recession has been burning a hole in my pockets.
Insurance and gas was over $400/month.
This weekend I needed a car to get to several social functions including a wedding, bachelor party, and mothers day brunch. Problem: No Car. Solution: Auto Share.
If you dont drive alot, and just need a car once in a while...this option really works. Very easy to use, and there are many different cars, and several locations near you.
Also...if you are really cheap...and cant afford the daytime driving rate of $6.75/hour....between the hours of 12 midnight and 7am...you can rent a car for only 1/hour. If you are a midnight owl, or enjoy doing groceries at midnight, or need to sneak away for a late nite rendezvous... these cheap rates will support your "nocturnal" needs.
And if you are truly the environmental type...you save the environment by not owning a car. -

Well after 3 years with AutoShare I have finally decided to call it quits. Yes they are cheaper than ZipCar and both are far cheaper than owning a car or taking taxis but I am really tired of being gouged for fees and surcharges. Clearly these guys are not interested in merely deterring people from returning cars a few minutes late--they must view late fees, etc. as a revenue stream. Also, I think they need to do a better job of cleaning and replacing their all too often worn out vehicles.

So, I don't have a car and I don't drive, usually. I guess not having a license has something to do with that... (hey, don't judge; everybody from a small town has done it!) In Toronto, I wouldn't dare it, so I'm very content being the passenger (gives you more freedom to look at things).
As such, I'm not the Auto Share account holder of the household, but as the co-pilot I have my fair share of experience with this great company!
Auto Share is first and foremost a great idea; if you don't own a car, you can share one with others, right? Simple, yet brilliant. That is the basic concept to Auto Share.
You pay a one-time fee and have access to a car at your whim. You book it online, pay online, get a key in the mail that enables you to open any of their designated lock boxes on site and voila; a car is yours! It's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
No fuss, nor muss nor icky rental car sales people to deal with. It kinda sounds too good to be true, but take my word for it; it isn't. It's as good as it gets! -

Sold the car, have autoshare lot 1 block from house. Wish the day rate were a bit more competitive with typical rental places, but for a few hours in the afternoon to run an errand Autoshare is perfect. Love that it's self-administered and all inclusive.
