You could probably go a long time without knowing what this place was all about. I sure did. It's tucked off a side street from Elgin between a pizza place and a hair salon and from the sign it wasn't clear to me what Aunt Olive's actually was until a couple of friends took me inside.
What I found was a little eatery with people enjoying hot soup and almost whispering to their table mates as my friends shopped the other side of the wall for vintage clothing and accessories.
I had a chuckle over some of the clothing (the figure skating outfits and plaid jumpers) but the wall was full of surprises.
At the back of the store is a very clean and simple kitchen where the staff (both times I've been it's only been a one person operation) look to prepare the home cooked meals. The soup smelled really good and there was something really neat about shopping for vintage clothing that my mother and grandmother probably once wore and smelling something that probably tasted as good as what they would cook up.
I had to go back a couple of weeks later to pick up some vintage glasses for a friend's Hallloween costume very last minute. The woman in the kitchen helped me out and knocked the price down for me because I didn't have change.
This seems like a really funky place. I'm not sure if it has Wifi but if it does you could probably surf the net here and feel right at home. The tables are close together and it was very quiet (almost too quiet for personal conversations) the last time I was in. -

Aunt Olive's used to be a really great place - both for eats and vintage goods. the price for vintage items were always on the high side, though. Now, the eats have gone down hill, since it was taken over by a new owner.
I used to go there all the time! Now, I don't go there anymore, at all -

A friend and I decided to check out different coffee shops/lunch places each time we meet for lunch. We decided to go here, because a friend of hers had it listed as one of her favorite places to hang out on Facebook.
When I got there I could see why. Aunt Olive's is a super trendy Vintage shop, which is also a restaurant. What a combination! You can hang out and shop and eat at the same time. The clothes they had were really awesome vintage styles and they had lots of boots and scarves. The first thing you see when you walk in the door is a set of shelves with some crazy designs of salt and pepper shakers and teapots. Along one side are clothes and the other side has tables.
We picked a table next to the salt and pepper shakers and had a look at the menu. There are some really interesting sandwich options here, but then our server came over and told us about the quiche of the day (red pepper and goat's cheese), which just sounded too good to pass up. I got mine with carrot and pear soup. Everything was delicious and we washed it down with a coffee.
Of course this meal lasted a couple of hours since we were talking and also "shopping" at the same time. This place is really low key, so it's great to just hang out for an afternoon. The washroom is in the basement and you have to walk through a hip record store to get there!...but that's another review! -

While I didn't find anything for me that day I did find a cheerful little spot with some very cute vintage items and a great selection of clothing from a local designer. With free cupcakes and lemon water to keep hydrated, I will defo be back.
