Good hostel, nice staff, cheap (breakfast include) and in the old Quebec.

Review from Lisa S.
I met a native of Montreal on my trip out of Canada. We chatted about my travels and Quebec City, and he asked me where I'd stayed. I told him "Auberge de la Paix" and he said "Oh no..."
I will say that the staff here were very friendly and allowed me to attempt a conversation in French despite my total lack of mastery of their language. But that was pretty much all I liked about this place. The mattresses were extremely hard. I actually had a bit of neck pain after my first night because I contorted myself into a really awkward position in order to sleep. There's a large shared bathroom for the whole floor which looked pretty clean but smelled like the rest stops on the New Jersey Turnpike. I'm not sure if this was part of an effort to decrease water use but the showers were set up to run for about 60 seconds and then abruptly stop. You had to push hard on a metal...thing....to get the water running again. I don't know if this was quirk at this particular hostel or if it's pretty normal but it's not something I've seen on any other travels in the US, South America, or Europe. In any case, it was really annoying.
I didn't try to find alternate accommodations since I was only in QC for 2 nights and only paid $25/night to stay here. On a return visit I would probably check out the Auberge International that my travel mate suggested. Or I'll start saving money now for a stay at the Chateau Frontenac. Hey, it could happen.
