Review from Simon B.
This review is misleading, as this restaurant is indefinitely closed. Conflicts between the employees and the owners have led to a lock out, and the place doesn't seem to have been opened for a while.
I had been going to "Le Coq" since I was 6, about 22-23 years ago. I went to elementary school right across the street, at l'Ecole Sacre-Coeur. When we were lucky, on Fridays, our parents would write us a note and we would be allowed to go pickup something from the restaurant and bring it back to eat at the cafeteria. We'd instantly make everybody jealous.
Once you crossed the street and made it in the restaurant, you'd go right to the register and order the chef's special. You didn't know what you'd get with that, either a thigh or breast, white or brown meat, but it was cheap and kind of exciting every time. You gave the cashier your money, and your change would come back rolling down the tray of a fancy little automatic change dispensing machine. Old school.
Then, you'd wait for your food by the counter (it's takeout only) and they'd shout the number on your receipt within a couple minutes. They were so fast, especially during lunch hour. You'd hurry out, but sometimes you wouldn't even wait to get back to school to take a plunge and snatch a couple crispy rigged fries from the tightly closed boxed. The fries were always hot and delicious especially once dunked in the salty chicken gravy. The chicken itself was of course moist, with perfect crispy brown skin.
The poutine was also tasty, albeit in a very odd way. The sauce was of s chemical orange, and the fries and cheese were mached together as if they were running out of space in the containers and still wanted to put more. The sauce was scarce, but there was enough to spread it throughout all the fries and cheese. Many friends didn't like it, but I loved it.
I live in the US now, and every year when I come back for Christmas, I make a little detour and hope that I'll be pleasantly surprised: that Le Coq will be open again. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like it'll be any time soon (see pictures).Listed in: Best Poutines.
