I absolutely LOVE their bread; it's crusty and fluffy. The bread with their beef curry is amazing! The beef briskets and tendons are super tender, it just melts in your mouth. I feel like time freezes when I'm eating this dish. Just me and my curry.

Their cold cut sub is pretty tasty, but it feels like there's more bread than the actual filling. And it's a bit more pricey too than the other popular viet sub places in Vancouver. Regardless, it's still a tasty sub.

When it comes to their spring rolls, I have no self control. It's orgasmic!!! They don't use the typical spring roll wrap; they use rice paper instead. I always recommend my friends to get this. It doesn't say on the menu, but there's half orders too.

    This place is cash only!

It was cold, it was rainy, and I was craving something comforting. Since I'm Asian, noodle soup it is. I seem to always order the beef stew with noodles. It's that good. The brisket is tender ( none of that "fighting with your chopsticks to take a bite" nonsense ), the carrots sweet and soup flavourful. 2 scoops of the chili paste and we have a happy camper here.
    Staff is friendly and prompt.
Cash only and line ups at peak times.

Sooooo good. Came here with one goal in mind: Banh mi. Glad to report that it did not disappoint. After having lived literally next door to Westminster (a.k.a. Little Saigon) in California, I have pretty high standards.

I scanned the menu looking for pâté, and found it in Item #2 (highly recommend this): French bread sub with home made ham, liver pâté, vegetables and hot pepper (optional for those who shy away from heat). http://www.yelp.com/bi...

The first thing I noticed was the perfectly crispy French bread, fluffy and baked to perfection, which I thought was just the right amount given that the filling was so rich. And I was pleasantly surprised that they spread on such a generous amount of pâté, This sandwich really sung with the combination of flavors and textures, all counterbalancing one another.

Interestingly, I actually ordered two banh mi because I wholly expected that at 4 bucks a pop in this city, one banh mi would not satisfy my appetite...but I was totally wrong! But the upside is...I get to have my banh mi 'leftovers' for lunch tomorrow!

Yup, all the hype is worthy. The best Vietnamese sandwiches in the city. Very friendly and welcoming staff and owners. Casual, yet clean premises. We have never been disappointed in the food, service or value. There is always a line up and it is for good reasons.

Many people have said out of their mouths that this is the 'best' Vietnamese sub place in town, and even the people who work in this little place will tell you of the orders they get for their beloved long buns! One day, I was in there at opening, and I was talking to the older gentleman there, and they said that their French bread comes from Granville Island, fresh in the morning, and they sell by the 'heaps' everyday. They even pack it good for you to take on the plane if you are planning to leave town with it!

Come here early, or you will be waiting either tightly cramped inside this small restaurant, or out in the cold! This place is first known for it's sandwiches, and second for the rest of the stuff on the menu. I have come here on my own, with family, for friends, and seen co-workers call and make orders to this place for their sandwiches, and each sandwich, regardless of the meat that you choose, is done quite well. The bread used, has a fresh crispyness to it, and for anyone who knows French bread, you will know what I am talking about. The pickled vegetables have a great sour crisp bite to them, and the meats are what you expect to make the perfect mix of Vietnamese sandwich/sub.

When this place hits about 11AM, that is when the lunch crowd picks up, and the workers here really get to work. One of the younger guys who works here even has a bluetooth headset connected to him to take orders of everyone calling in their lunch. So with all the positives mentioned, why do I give a middle of the line rating, you wonder, well, I had food poisoning here. It wasn't pleasant, for anyone who has gone through the moans and groans of having food poisoning, but I will be back, it is just when.

You usually can find parking in front of the place, and there are no meters, just remember, go get money, as like most small Asian restaurants, cash only,

I do not know why this place is always packed with people, I thought the food was mediocre. I ordered a chicken sub, beef pho, and lemongrass chicken on rice. The chicken sub was good, but how good can it be when they do not even bake their own bread. The beef pho had too much basil, and no other taste, and so, it wasn't good. The lemongrass chicken was VERY OILY, with really thick chunks of skin, and with hardly any meat on it. The prices are pretty steep, given the quality of things. Cannot recommend.

A bit crowded but the service was good. The shredded chicken sub was pretty weak compared to others Ive had (I wish they had lemongrass bbq chicken subs). The meat was the consistency of the tuna in a tuna sandwich. Also, the amount of carrot and radish in the sub was less than I'm used too. The bread was fresh and well buttered though.

The Pho was reasonable, the meat was tougher than I'm used too though. Spring rolls are good and made fresh but a bit expensive (we ordered a half order)

Overall I wouldn't go out of my way to wait in line and cram into the place. Especially because they don't have my favorite drink - the avocado milkshake.

I tend to stick to the Bahn Mi here, and occasionally get a side of spring rolls and iced coffee. Everything is terrific, and very well priced.

It's always packed, so expect a wait if you show up between noon and 2. Super friendly staff though, and they cheerfully do takeout.

Just came back from a 10 day trip to eastern Canada, and this was our first stop in Vancouver. That's gotta say something.  :-)

I didn't think I could like a banh mi ga as much as the one at Tung Hing - go figure!

The roll was perfect - the outside was crunchy without causing lip injuries and generating a lot of crumbs. The inside was soft and warm.  The chicken was moist and sauced up with something sweet and with a bit of spicy heat. The vegetables and peppers were in perfect proportion to the meat and roll size. All this for a song - $3.75!

It tasted like I needed to have another one...immediately, but the lineup said to wait until next time. Next time can't come soon enough!

So this is what a real banh mi Vietnamese sub tastes like. It's actually warm, and costs about 70% of what I pay for the stone-hard-breaded, stretchy-meat-filled stuff I find where I live.

Had one of their Vietnamese sandwiches (nam-wich) and an iced coffee. The sandwich was toasted perfectly, the fillings were fresh and they included julienne green onions which was a nice touch. It came to $8.20 so it was a pretty standard for that food genre.
I did notice that it was chinese run but they made good food so it didn't matter to me.

I'm a fan!  The banh Mi is good, I especially love their french roll.  They do something different then all the other joints I've at at.  My usual order here is the beef on rice with a sandwich on the side and one to go!  I can't help it I'm addicted to Banh Mi.

All the reviews i read of pho here sounds great.  I'm sort of a pho connoisseur in search of the perfect bowl.  I will have to check it out.

Yup, I'm still a fan of the BAHN MI here. Stopped by the other day with a small group in need of a quick lunch in the area. We were dismayed (but not surprised) at the line out the door. Since we were in a hurry and the weather was nice, we put in an order for sandwiches to go. Although we were told 10-15 minutes, they were ready in less than that, and we happily nommed our subs in the vacant lot outside, flagrantly and carelessly letting the crumbs fly. I forgot which 'wich was which, as we ordered an assortment of #1, 2, 3, 4... but they were all good. The fact that the soft French bread was still warm made it downright outstanding. Remember, CASH ONLY.

On our way out of BC, we swung by and picked up some sandwiches. I still had some cash left and figured I'd spend the last of it here. When i got inside, it was SO packed that I kinda panicked and just ordered 2 banh mi dac biet and an iced coffee to go, which STILL left me with plenty of cash left. So after shopping our way back down I-5 (9 hours later!), we got home and took out the sandwich... WHY?! Why did I not buy like 20 freakin' sandwiches?!? It was still good...... really, really good. Like, I want to get back in the car and head back up to get a fresh one kind of good. The bread wasn't crispy anymore, but man... I can almost taste it. The combination of cold cuts, meatballs and fatty mayo...... amazing.

Firstly, thanks to fellow yelpers for educating me on the actual name of the vietnamese style sandwiches (rolls?), banh mi, because I usually only look at the English on the menu and refer to them as "awesome crunchy sandwiches" to my friends who have no idea what I'm talking about.

I've been going to this place for years and only for their banh mi. Have I tried other spots? Well, yeah I did try the ones from Vina in the malls but I don't think that's a proper comparison. So really, the answer is officially "No"  and I have no intention of trying other places because I'm not gonna mess with a good thing and will give this place my business as much as I can.

My usual is the pate & ham just because it's so rich and flavourful. At the urging of a friend who's a fellow APC fan, I recently tried the chicken one and while it was quite tasty, it didn't compare to my usual. Really though, they could marinate a tire, stick it in that amazing French roll and I'd still love it. The garnish is always fresh and crunchy. Best of all, their quality has remained consistent through out the years.

The staff is courteous and even when the place is packed with a line up outside the door, they still make an effort to make sure you don't feel ignored.

Also, I really love that I can phone in my order if I'm craving their banh mi for take out.

All this talk of their banh mi is making me think I need to make a trip tomorrow  :D

I visited Au Petit Cafe for a banh mi (Vietnamese sub) after reading a lot of online reviews that said they were The Best. The place was packed (at lunch hour) so I ordered one to go.

I had to make a phone call after leaving with the sandwich and walked down the street a few blocks until it was Business Time. The sandwich was almost inedible. I'm not sure if they had put a weird giant glob of mayo in there, or if the pate was white in colour and melted everywhere, but the sandwich was greasy and nasty and leaking!

After a few bites, I opened it up and looked inside, and there was this chunky, pasty opalescent shining stuff with lots of bubbles that was not mentioned on the menu. Looking at it made me feel queasy like I wanted to throw up, so instead, three quarters of the sandwich landed in the garbage.

I didn't feel up to marching back there, but instead will visit the place on 33rd and Main, a block away, or Ba Le instead.

Thinking about it still gives me the willies.

My brother was saying to me, "Seriously? This place? It's so dingy."  Of course though - the best places are the dingiest places.

I searched up "pho" on yelp in Vancouver - and we decided to come here.

I'm glad we did!  The Banh Mi wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be - but the pho! Mm mm goodness.  Totally hit the spot.  You might want to go early though -- we went around 2:30 PM, and somehow, it was still packed.

Please read other reviews by Vietnamese folks with a grain of salt. Vietnam is a diverse country with diverse cuisines. Although Southern Vietnamese style dominated most Vietnamese restaurants in North America, some of the best food in our opinion is from North Vietnam.

Au Petit Cafe is a good example. We are a mixed couple; one of us second generation Vietnamese with roots in Hanoi and Hue, the other ethnic Chinese with roots in northern Vietnam. Au Petit Cafe is an authentic example of Northern style food that is light, fresh, and tasty.

Au Petit Cafe has great fresh banh mi sandwiches, amazing fall apart beef stews, and pho with clear broth. We've been twice. Both times the place was packed. We noticed that at most tables, people ordered a main dish and banh mi as a side.

Tips for it your eating enjoyment:
    -Cash only
-Come in small groups of two or three, the place is small
-Be prepared for the wait, or come during off times

Anyone notice how Pink this place is?

Had the curry beef with bread, spring roll, and cold cuts sub.  Man, the curry and bread was sooooooooo good I could be eating that all day!  Fresh bread, served warm, soft and crisp on the outside was what I've been missing all my life!!  They only gave us one napkin for 2 people, but it's ok cause it was finger licking good!!

Spring roll was deliciously good!  Better than most places I had!

I believe the menu said they use house made ham/meats for their cold cuts.  Whatever it is, it was good!  Still though, I'll rank APC behind Ba Le (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) and Tung Hing (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...).

    Tips:

Don't sit by the door unless you like people standing next to you and watching you eat as they wait for a seat.

Don't sit next to the cash register, cause I've seen things fall from there lol.  They are a bit clumsy.

    Cash Only and closed Tuesdays.

Why is it that most if not all Viet pho restaurants are so tacky, but in a good way. This one's tackyness did not disappoint with its pink walls.

I was seriously craving some pho and spring rolls, so me and a friend decided to check this place out since the reviews were fairly decent. After reading many of them, I was so conflicted. I couldn't decide if I wanted soup or a sandwhich, since so many people vouched for their sandwhich deliciousness. Now some you are probably thinking, why not just get both? Well my gut would probably argue against your suggestion. My initial craving for pho won over and I went for the beef ball and raw beef slices with rice noodle pho. It was good, but just your typical pho. We also ordered a spring roll, which was hella tasty and satisfying.

I was so tempted to buy a sandwich to go, but thought that my gut would thank me later for not over indulging. I will definitely have to come back to try their sandwiches at a later time. Now I have an excuse to go back.

Despite everyone's raves, I had still never formally been to what's considered one of the best Vietnamese eateries in East Vancouver, Au Petit Café. I seldom eat Viet food out. That's because I get homemade ph, noodles, and cuisine at home. I'm a bit of a snob that way.

My standard for Vietnamese food is understandably high. The sandwiches or "bánh mì" from Au Petit are always scrumptious and delectable. I have had that taken out before. However, I am just not than enthralled with shredded chicken, but that's me.

The ph itself looked good and my dining partners sure enjoyed it. The consistency of the broth did look good. No matter, it's hard to compare with what I am use to at home.

I had the rice and pork chops. The portions were good and the meat and rice were tasty and quite filling. I enjoyed it but I missed not having it grilled as customary.

It was a very enjoyable meal and mostly lived up to the hype. There was a busy lunch rush when we arrived and had a long wait, but it was worth it. I will happily return.

I came here with a friend on a Sunday morning.  We arrived just before the line-up...SCORE!

The seating is always uncomfortable, there is literally an inch of space between you and the next table. I mean, when our neighbors look the other way I could probably easily reach over and grabbed their sandwich...muah hahahaha...

Onto the food! We ordered a sandwich, wonton soup, spring rolls and beef stew with rice to share.  The only thing I did not eat was the wonton soup-lucky!  My friend drank glass after glass of water! After his 10th refill, I looked at him and asked: "dude, are you hungover?" He says he doesn't think so but can't seem to stop drinking water.  After he finished his soup, I realized why.  I said:"Man, I think there is MSG in your soup" No wonder...He drank water the rest of the day like a dying man from the desert...

The moral of the story is I really love the food here but if you are sensitive to MSG, this probably would not be your favorite place.

The staff of this family owned business always greet patrons with a smile, ready to accommodate any need. The service is brisk and friendly, the food is always delicious. The bread!! The best part, coming in fresh daily from the French bakery on Granville Island, La Baguette & L'Echalote. It doesn't get any better than this. And if there IS another one better than this in town, I still won't stop going here!

Sandwiches! Nuff said. One of the best because of their very fresh and limited bread. They'll usually sell out before the lunch hour is done.

I like my french bread to be warm and not too crunchy or too soft, just right. Ever chew through soft french bread? Takes forever...and when its too crunchy its all over me and my teeth hurt.

Anyways, I always get 2, one special which is Vietnamese ham and I love the chicken meatball.  I load mine with extra hot peppers too. The veggie ingredients a fresh and crunchy as well.

PRICE: Cheap. Come on, this was like lunch stuff for high school. But I could only afford 1 back in the day :(

SERVICE: Nothing fancy. Just order and go. Speed is key for me and you can't make slow sandwiches unless there's a lineup.  Staying in is fine too, its nice to have a Vietnamese ice coffee with my sandwich.

SUGGEST: Sandwiches!!! My fav. I love sandwiches of any culture. Definitely a place to drop by if you're in the area at lunch time and feel like a couple. But be there early they really do sell out fast.

One of the most famous Pho places on Main Street. A small and delicate place to grab a nice bowl of rice noodle soup and maybe a Vietnamese bun to go.

I do enjoy this place because of their food. It is spectacular, but the curry is not up to par. Their bowl soup noodles are delectable and I enjoy every single slurp that I took! Their Vietnamese coffee, was great. Love the sweetness of the condensed milk and the strong dark coffee that made it the best ever.

Only thing is that this place is ALWAYS packed and the wait is long. I will go again because of the hype of this place along Main street.

This place has the best vietnamese subs, hands down. The french bread is made fresh daily and it shows: crusty on the outside and soft & chewy on the inside. Best of all, it's dirt cheap! Make sure you get there no later than 1 or 2pm, as they can sell out of their bread.

I've sampled the curry chicken/beef which comes with their french bread. It's nice to dunk the bread into the curry sauce which is rich and fragrant.

I'd give Au Petit a full 5 stars if it weren't for the so-so pho (head over to Pho Tan instead). I'm also not a fan of the cramped seating area, but those subs are too good to pass up!

This totally would be a 5 star review except for.... (read further)

This was my second time coming here and I got the shredded chicken and shredded vietnamese pork sub on French roll (I shared with someone!).  It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had! They put fresh jalapeno peppers in there and it's just the right amount of spicy! The bread is so fresh and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside.

(BTW, they have a Yelp sticker on their door!) Business seems to be booming for them because they were so busy. I can see why though. Plus the prices are so cheap!

We also shared a vietnamese spring roll which had a great flavour. Totally would get it again. Last time we got the seafood noodle soup and it was good.

I am totally coming back here for a bahn mi. In fact, it may be my new food obsession.

However, they do lose a star because the last time I was here there was an insect in the vegetables that were served with our soups and they were very unapologetic. It was a little disturbing.  This time after consuming the spring rolls, I discovered a strand of hair on the plate.  But I will still come back because I'm sure the bug thing was a one time thing and the hair thing.. well I'm just going to pretend I didn't see it because I did like the bahn mi a lot.

But if the staff is reading this, please be a little mindful of your food safety practices in the kitchen. I'm not sure I would tolerate this a third time.

My wife, 19 month old toddler and I visited this place for the first time yesterday.  We'll be back!  We each had a delicious Vietnamese sub on fabulous french baguette, along with spring rolls.  My wife had the ham and pate, I had the 'meatballs.'  I would say the meatballs were a little better, but both were tasty.  Service was attentive and fast, and the bill was $16!  Can't argue with that.

    Other notes:

    - If you want to have dinner, be there early  They close at 7pm.
    - The place is quite small and was quite busy, so we did have to wait about 6-7 minutes for a table, but turnover appears to happen fast.

We've heard about this place so many times and gone by it many times more and it is just now that we've finally made it in for a delicious lunch.

One of the best Vietnamese subs I've ever had.

Vietnamese style deep fried spring rolls were amazing as well.  Served very hot.

Vietnamese style coffee with the sweet milk is one of my favourite drinks.  I love it so much we have the little metal steamers to use at home.  Waiting for it to drip through is such an exercise of patience.  Stir to blend milk, add ice, and then one big long gigantic graceful sip and it is gone.  MMMM.

While small and very busy, the place has a great atmosphere. Groups of families, groups of friends, couples and the like....  They are quick to clear and clean the tables between guests and the table service was prompt and friendly as well.

Several people came in to order subs to go while we were there; they seem to do a brisk trade of sandwich take-away.

We're fans and sure to return to sample more from the menu including the noodles, the curried meats and the soups.

Keep in mind who is writing these reviews. I am VIETNAMESE!!

My family including myself are very particular about food and especially Mom, who does not dine out at Vietnamese restaurants here because she has over 60 years of cooking experience and over 100 years of family history in Vietnamese cooking and only expect the 'best', which does not exist in Vancouver. They have excellent ones in California (as "Debbie P" agrees too), Australia, France, and Ottawa because that's where most Southern Vietnamese immigrated during the War. In Vancouver, a majority comes from the Northern part, where it is mostly farmland and close to the Chinese border. Which explains why their dishes resembles more of Chinese and not much of Vietnamese. Needless to say that this is NOT Vietnamese food!!!

First, it is cooked by all Chinese people who uses the wrong spices with the soup and in some of their dishes. Home made fish sauce is 'yuck' and made so watered down, like typical Chinese style at the food fair. I had to try it because most of my friends wanted my take on it, so here it is!!

What it is good for, is for young high school kids looking for cheap eats, but trust me, non of the dishes are made with the authenticity that this place seems to claim.

The sandwhiches have been tortured with chinsese flavouring and completely westernized, it had no flavour and the basic mayonnaise and the pate which is the main ingredient, was missing. Instead their Chinese version of it, was mixed with odd spices and fish sauce, to fool people ( who don't know much about Vietnamese food), and who smells the fish sauce will immediately think 'oh this must be traditional'. NO.

Unfortunately, there are two restaurants that serve traditional, or as close to it as you can find in Vancouver, and one is on southside of Kingsway close to Knight st, called Tung Hing Bakery. These are made by the SOUTHERN Vietnamese family, the only region in Vietnam that are the true culinary.  Next door is also a take out place that serves home cooked meals to go, no subs though. These are places where the Vietnamese community go to, including the Northern Vietnamese. Another one is the Cambodian restaurant, but they also serve some very traditional Vietnamese dishes, on Main st, Phomn Penh and you can expect line ups.

One day, I hope to have enough$ and really give everyone a taste for your money by opening a Vietnamese restaurant to show everyone what real home cooked Vietnamese food is like!! We have exceptional family recipies that I do not even share with my friends because they are from Great Grandmom and her mother:)!

I like this place. I found it on another review site since someone (ahem-YELP) took so long to get to Vancouver. Most people liked it and some people were not impressed, but the site had 30 reviews for it (while other Vietnamese restaurants reviewed on this site only had a few reviews), so I had to see what the hype was all about...I've been there about 5 or 6 times now.

The fried rolls and pho tai are really good. The rare steak is sliced very thin, and the rolls are crispy on the outside but not too heavy/greasy.

People line up outside it at times, so I go to Bon Cafe on the corner of Main/33rd if I'm too impatient. Bon Cafe is pretty good too but I think this place is better.

there is a picture of my food from this weekend posted.

This is a small and famous Vietnamese Sub restaurant on Main Street over 15-20 years.  I always phone to order something to go instead of waiting for 20-30 mins to be seated.

The special french bread sub was very good - The bread was warm and crispy, meat was so soft.  Delicious!!

They have steamed rice paste with green bean pasted - it serves on weekend only.  Yummy.

Famous for its Vietnamese subs (banh mi), I enjoy Au Petite's freshness. The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The pork is moist and mouth-watering. I'm going to have to check out Marc D.'s recommendation at Tung Hing because the subs are great but not mind-blowing.

They also serve a variety of other Asian dishes in this small cafe. I especially like the way they do their chicken curry. It's clean, simplistic and the sauce is light. If you're looking for Pho, I would recommend for you to go elsewhere.

Contrary to some people, cough** (Rose N.), I liked Au Petite for Vietnamese food. Who cares if it's not authentic simply because it's Northern Vietnamese cuisine with a strong Chinese influence. Vietnamese food has always been a fusion of other cultures which is why Vietnamese food is so good.

I say go to Au Petite Cafe because their sandwiches are good. However their Pho is mediocre, no different than any other Pho places. My review is trustworthy because I am basing it on taste and observation. I tasted the food and the sandwich was good. Then I observed my surroundings and noticed that almost every table,  patrons had a sandwich and a NON-Pho dish. What kind of dish? perhaps TRADITIONAL Vietnamese dishes other than the typical Pho. I saw a dish with meatballs swimming in some broth. Others had beef stew with French bread. Some had curry dishes and rice. And I felt stupid because I ordered the Pho. But not SOOO stupid because I ordered the sandwich thus making me a winner.

The ambiance is awesome. Super small place that has NOTHING appealing nor matching the cuisine. You come here because of the food and it's low low prices (Walmart slogan).

I met some friends here for lunch once even though I knew there was nothing vegetarian on the menu - but I knew they could leave the meat out a bánh mì.

I'm glad I went and ordered the sandwich. It was the best baguette that I've had outside of France. The sandwich was made with fresh bread that was still warm inside - it was perfectly crusty and the vegetables were fresh.

This place makes my mouth water thinking about it. When others say this is the best bánh mì in Vancouver, they are right!

All I can say is, call in early so you can get your Banh Mi!!!

I've had Au Petite's Banh Mi twice in the past month and they are so delicious. Their bread is sooo fresh - chewy but not too hard to bite and not alot of crumbs to clean up afterwards. (Bales subs = Messy Mayghan). Some recommendations would be the shredded chicken and my fave, curry beef stew served with french bread! Ohmyword. The beef is tender and just melts in your mouth. The bread soaks up the flavorful curry sauce and can be a very comforting meal!

The only nay say I have about this place is that their vietnamese spring rolls is pretty pricey for the amount they give you. I still prefer Bao Chau for their prices and size of the spring rolls.

I've never attempted to actually eat in the restaurant because it's fairly small. My advice is just to order take out and enjoy the meal at home. They usually sell out of bread by noon, so again, call in and order them early!
