Here's the thing about this place: they REALLY love cats.  It's in the air here.  The Atlantic Cat Hospital is home to my cat's veterinarian, Dr. Chisholm, and I would suggest there is not a man who has more affection for cats in this city.

Plus, he knows his stuff.  He and his staff are great at what they do.  My kitty has a thyroid condition so we see the doc regularly now, and the visits are always as painless as possible (for all of us).

Like most vets, cost is an issue, and, like most vets, there can be pressure to opt for expensive diagnostics. But the doc is reasonable, and willing to do whatever we choose, in the end.

Nice bonus - they are willing to write me a prescription for my cat's medication (which is the same medication humans take for thyroid) so I can have it filled at the pharmacy of my choosing - a big money saver in the long run.

I struggled with the star rating for this review.

    Allow me to explain.

There is no question that Dr. Chisholm knows and loves kitties. And the staff that work there are all super as well. The quality and knowledge are not what are questionable about the Atlantic Cat Hospital, for those reasons, I would give the knowledge and professionalism a 5 star rating.

    However.

What has left me with a bad taste in my mouth (several times now) is the cost of service and the pressure/guilt trip I feel I always receive here.

I get that the man is a professional, and as such, his services cost money. That's fine. What is not fine is being guilted/pressured into doing additional and even unnecessary procedures.

For example, I recently had to take my kitty in due to some unknown issues (at the time, he's absolutely fine now). Full marks for them taking him in the morning even though there were no immediate openings and allowing me to leave him with them while I went to work. Can't say enough about that. What really upset me was the phone call I got at lunch time informing me they were unable to get my cat out of his carrier (which, BTW the entire top portion is removable....) because he was being overly aggressive. The proposed solution was to knock him out essentially so the Dr. could examine him. The part of the conversation that got me went as follows:

Dr. "We would like to give him a sedative so we can examine him or we can just wait and try again later when he calms down"
Me "Ok. What's your adivce as the expert here?"
Dr. "Well, I just know that if it were my cat, I'd want to know."

Basically, were I to say no at that instant, I would become the heartless horrible neglectful pet owner who probably likes to kick puppies and stuff.

Clearly I said yes. My friend who I was sitting with who witnessed the conversation said "You mean a professional cat vet can't get the cat out of the carrier?!"

Long story short, this isn't the first time I've been guilted in to additional procedures here. It just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. Clearly any concerned pet owner is going to do whatever it takes to ensure their cat is healthy. Don't prey on vulnerabilities and emotions in these situations though.

Oh and at the end of the day? There was no real diagnosis for why my cat was howling in pain and so out of sorts. Only some vague possibilities with the suggestion I come back in 48 hours for a recheck. On my dime.
