Atex Fabrics (aka Designer Fabric Liquidators) is a fantastic little store huddled among the dirty, run down, mostly abandoned, storefronts of Hastings St. I know it looks sketchy, but it's just on the edge of the sketchy area. The bus will drop you off right outside the door, all you have to do is step off and walk in.
Inside the actual store, the walls are lined with bolts of quality fabric, as well as a long table down the centre. The selection isn't as large as most places, but it's pretty much all fashion fabric. It feels like there's more to choose from since you don't have to wade through a lot of crud. I almost succumbed to buying some featherweight dusty rose silk charmuse near the entrace at $12/metre, but I controlled myself and managed to walk away with some soft purple nylon spandex jersey at half the price.
Overall, the prices are reasonable; there's also the discount section at the back of the store on the right, where it's all $2.50/metre.
One thing I love about this store is that it has fabric that looks like what you see in clothing stores. It's not too stretchy or too thick, or too whatever else, it's wearable stuff. They do have the more decorative/costumy fabric too. But after visiting this store I feel like I bypassed American Apparel's supplier. Seriously, $40 for a tube with a drawstring? How about I pay $3 and make it myself.
Finally, as a bonus, the salesperson was non-intrusive yet helpful. I think I'll be visiting again soon.Listed in: Fabrictopia Vancouver
