It's that time of year again, and we were sorted out once again with all of our apartment gardening needs. Notice, I said apartment gardening. With 45 square feet of space to plant, our needs are basic.
A couple of things of changed from the last time we were in full gardening mood - mostly, the front area of the store is now a browsable, home decor and fashion space, complete with footwear, clothing and accessories. So, this doesn't make much sense to me, since I consider them a gardening store, but whatever. It's fun to browse.
I'm not sure how often they have gardening volunteer help there, but yesterday, a busy Saturday, they had two lovely ladies on hand to answer questions and give advice to us, the novice, the less-than-green thumbed urbanites just wanting our herbs to grow.
I'm getting a bit greener as a gardener. Outside being over-watered, the plants we got this year look healthy and hearty. Only time will tell, but I have high hopes for our mature rosemary, sage, mint, oregano and all of the lavender we've got growing in a planter.Listed in: Favourite Vancouver…, Condo Living in Vancouver, Hostess Gifts, Dabbling in Gardening

We came by here to get some planters for our windowsill, since the sun has finally decided to make an appearance. We were a little put off by the shitty parking meter, it refused to take our credit cards or our cash, so we ended up leaving a note on the dash since the staff warned us the lot is patrolled quite regularly. We ended up having no problems, thank goodness!
We grabbed two wooden planter boxes, some fresh dirt, and about 12 herbs to put in the planters, 2 pansies, and an aloe vera plant. We had a gift card from the lovely Luisa D. so we used that up and dropped another $100 or so, and now our little house is truly becoming a home. I planted some basil, mint and cilantro, so we can have fresh herbs this summer, which will motivate me to do more cooking. (I hope!)
It's nice to have a store like Art Knapp so close, because having a little green space in your home is very important. This location is smaller then the other ones in the lower mainland for sure, but it still has a great selection, and the staff were super helpful and friendly. I was a little weirded out by the front of the store being packed with clothes and random stuff, where I expected to find plants and gardening supplies. Who knows, maybe people in this demographic like that kinda shit? If they could get that parking meter fixed, it would easily be a five star shopping experience. -

The best advice about plants and their needs is here - most staff are highly knowledgable.
Beautiful plants and everything you could need to purchase to look after your plants. And did I mention GORGEOUS store? You could easily spend half
a day in there, browsing amonst all the plants, from huge to tiny, and household items, ladie's clothing and accesssories, furniture, pots, on the
main floor AND upstairs (ladie's things are only on the main floor).
One blemish on the otherwise ideal place to shop: their new sound system that blasts out loud rock tunes. It used to be a respite and oasis from the
noisy West End stores and downtown in general, but sadly they have jumped
on the noise-pollution bandwagon, too. Sigh..... -

Well what else could one expect from a downtown garden centre? Well how about a clothing store? or art shop? well Art Knapp Urban Garden has all that and more.
They offer good items for an urban garden but more mainstream and less exotic plants, customer service was good but I would not say that they were "professional" gardeners. My suggestion is if you have a car (or co-op car membership... take a drive) if you are land locked downtown and need some plants it's a good stop -

As far as service in 2010... It sounds like they have hired a few more happy helpful people! I have been there twice in the past week to perfect my deck jungle and have only experienced great staff that knew exactly what they were doing. I worked for a similar company for 5 years, so I can vouch that they are indeed well informed this year.
As for the prices. Well, in terms of everything living, I'd say the price is pretty typical of an authentic garden store (NOT WALMART QUALITY). We have a pretty full deck of herbs, strawberries, and hanging baskets for about $80. Well worth it if you enjoy your sunny deck as much as I do in the summer.
The watering can$... well, these are a different story. Yikes. Same with some of the pots and indoor plants. Buy them somewhere else if you are on a budget.
A Zen garden not quite, but I am getting there. Close enough! -

I would agree with Jill that this store is truly lovely.
But, service ... seriously meh. I am a fairly experienced gardner, albeit from a very different climate, and of the four employees I interacted with about setting up a garden on my porch, no one was enthusiastic, and two were explicitly not helpful. That's fine ... if I'm going to Home Depot and going totally budget.
But, for paying a premium ... I would have really liked some better service. I won't be shopping here again- I could have done the same at HD for 1/3 to 1/2 the price.
Update- One of the plants I got went into transplant shock and died on me! Home Depot had a great selection, carried many of the same brands of pot, very cheap. I feel very bad about recommending a giant chain over a local business, but ... -

I am not at all experienced at gardening. I kill every plant I try to nurture. The last plant I bought, a so-called hardy crocus, spent its final days shrinking from me like a shy kid at a party. Urban gardens are smart and chic though, so I am giving it one more try.
Art Knapp Urban Garden had the potential to intimidate me, with its row upon row of exotic, delicate flowers, fragrant shrubs and flowering herbs. Not to mention more garden gnomes than I've ever seen in one place. If you have a backyard, and you love it, come here for a potentially pricey paradise.
To my delight, the immediate, friendly and knowledgeable service I received made me feel slightly more confident about my gardening capabilities. Turns out my high, open, blustery balcony is not ideal for the delicate flora I have been attempting to grow. I was informed that I need hardy herbs like mint and lavender. Not only pretty and fragrant but yummy, too!
My green-thumb experiment may fail once again. If it succeeds, I'll be back to Urban Garden for more! -

Much love to this place. They have so many things where I thought, "This place had it!" If you're looking for anything for your garden, and you live in the city, come here first. They even let me borrow their wagon to wheel all my things safely to home.

This place is like gardener's heaven; an emporium of greenery, fertilizer, soil, pots for your green little darlings and just about anything else you could dream of to get your garden growing. The store itself is large and rambles its way outside where you'll find greenery for your garden and then back inside where you'll find all kinds of plants and garden-type decor items for your interior green spaces. Much of what they carry here is quite tasteful, in the style of a Zen Garden, perhaps. So if you are looking for miniature tropicals or 5 foot tall palm trees, ceramic Buddhas, or wind chimes, you'll find it all here along with your gardening gloves and tools. And, joy! They have a garden consulting/design service so you can get the pros to help you go green. Hurray!

Also note, this store is one of the few (only?) places you can go downtown to get a cut tree at christmas time!
