I had bought and enjoyed Art Is In bread from La Bottega before, but didn't realize the bakery/cafe existed until Rick Mercer tweeted about it. My friend insisted I try it out after we finished exams, so we journeyed to the strange limbo-like realm between Chinatown and Hintonburg that is home to Art Is In.
WOW. The corn chowder: bold spices, smooth and creamy texture (and was that tarragon we tasted in there?) The pork tourtiere and turkey bacon club sandwich were both good, but the hit of the afternoon was the deep fried dill pickle sandwich. The fries were seasoned with rosemary and served with both ketchup and some sort of herbed mayonnaise. The only miss was the side salad. The lettuce looked tired and there was nothing special about it (carrots, tomatoes, cucumber I think?)
We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was a zoo. I don't think there were ever less than 15 people in line. But the bakery is huge, so we had no problems finding a spot to sit. The line moved quickly. I can't wait to go back! -

I love this bakery!
However as much as I love it, the bakeries in Paris made me realize they're just on another level. The deserts here are still top notch. I really like the chocolate-almond and almond croissants. There were a few desserts with German sounding names that I've tried that were also awesome.
I'm particular to the jalapeno and the potato dill bread...especially the potato dill. I feel there are better baguettes to be purchased in town.
The have stopped the half price after 5pm deal but have replaced it with a buy one get one free after 5pm.
They also offer soups and sandwiches here, but I've never personally tried any. It's a pretty cool space and you should check it out and try a few items.Listed in: 2012: 366 Day Challenge, Ottawa: Cheap Eats, Ottawa: BURGERS!!!, Ottawa: Baked Goodness

- hidden in the scuzzy part of mechanicsville, at the city center building.... art is in is a really really really great bakery
- if you venture into this area, you will be grandly rewarded with fantastic bread (their potato dill is out of this world good with this great olive oil flavour), stellar sandwiches, and decent sunday brunch.
- i was shocked this morning to find this place rammed. but i guess the secret is out. -

Love love love this place, but allow yourself enough time to order. This place is so popular you may be waiting 10-15 min just to place an order, but so worth it. Oh, and they also sell their bread 50% off after 5 p.m.!

So, I just went to Art-Is-In with a HUGE hangover, and the kind ladies there fixed me right up with everything I need to be cured. I got some delicious, bold drip coffee (not sure what brand they use but it definitely tastes like Just Us or Kicking Horse... the good stuff). And a breakfast sandwich on sourdough, complete with two over-easy eggs, and some cheese au gratin. I could have had it on a croissant, but I think my arteries are upset enough over the poutine I had last night.

Art Is In has made it's local name with their famous bread. That is their strong suit. No sandwich can go wrong with their bread. Other bakery items while still good need work like the croissant which is a bit on the dense side and the butter tart which which while very buttery, is a bit too syrupy. Alternatively meringue-like texture of the chewy chocolate walnut cookie is both light and rich.
Reminds me of City Bakery in NYC.

What a find! An over-the-top fantastic bakery in an obscure warehouse.
We tried various baked goods which were all excellent. I wouldn't be able to give a description that would do any of them justice. The bakery also serves sandwiches and soups which I look forward to trying on our next visit. Their coffee is excellent too.
Do yourself a favor and just go here. -

Yay! Art Is In has moved, and expanded their operation. They now offer croissants, morning pastries, sandwiches, tarts and cakes! Located in the growingly funky City Center, the bakery has seating and coffee / tea available. There goes my diet!

Years ago, when he was working at the bakery, I would survey my then-partner's flour-dusted clothing and scowl. Despite his peace offerings of fresh Dynamite loaves, the bits of dough I'd find in the shower bothered me. Well, I admit I feel slightly ashamed at my annoyance as it turns out I had an "in" at one of the hippest, freshest, and tastiest bakeries in the city. Their current brick and mortar location offers some of the best sandwiches I have ever (and that's EVER) had. Case in point: I hate tuna fish. I've avoided tuna fish melts for that exact reason. My current partner ordered one and orgasmically declared it to be delicious. Not one to miss out on a fantastic taste sensation, I cautiously took a bite. Yum! No overwhelming fishiness (which I detest), lotsa crunchiness, just a touch of cheese, and all sandwiched by their renowned baguettes to boot. My own Italian-style deli meats sandwich was equally delicious. We shared a bowl of heavenly cream of mushroom soup and, in retrospect, should have gotten dessert. The place was busy on a Sunday afternoon, so go early lest your favourite take-home buns and baguettes be bought out!
