Review from Megan S.
Canadian owned and operated with prices rivaling Walmart - that's why I shop here.
Need 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets? How about a set for under $40. Updating your bathroom? Ceramic bathroom soap dispensers for $4.99. Cleaning supplies? Every brand name for a fraction of what you'd pay at Safeway. Big packs of cute and plushy ankle socks? Plenty of styles, and plenty cheap.
Although famous for their shoe sales, I find the selection a bit too gaudy and high-heeled for my conservative footwear tastes. That said, if you buy your gumboots anywhere but here, you're a FOOL!
That's right, you there with the $80 gumboots... I just called you a fool. -

We were in town for the weekend and we just needed a few odds and ends (soap for one...see my review of City Centre Hotel), so we hopped over to this store and were pleasantly surprised. They seem to have been established specifically for me or people like me. Food, sundries, cheap clothing, camping equipment...what else do you need?
The checkout lines were long but the prices and selection were good. -

This place has a little of everything and most of it at a low price point. We wandered in here because it looked interesting and thought there might be something we couldn't live without.
They did have soap here (read hotel review) so we picked some of that up. A lot of pharmacy fare as well as low priced dvds, clothing, camping gear and inexpensive snack food and drink.
We picked a few other essentials a camping mug (see hotel review again) and a few other items for the duration of our stay.
Fun to look around and see what they have. Apparently, one of Canada's leading discount department stores. I'll definitely check it out again if I need sundry type items.Listed in: Vancity

Pretty pretty pretty good.
Needed a few cheap pieces and although the hoodies weren't as inexpensive as i would have thought (or numerous or in my size) i did find a basic toque for $1!! That got me pretty excited. That and the wine gums...
Definitely worth a look if you are looking for cheap goods that don't have to be of great quality.
Best part though was how everyone opens the door for you! I must have gone through the different sections at least 3 times and every time I felt like I was in a different era! Nice touch A&N, nice touch. -

Excursions to Army & Navy never fail to be enjoyable.
Pros include the fact that everything is pretty cheap, and A&N literally has almost everything. From fishing gear to food to shoes to toiletries to clothes. And what girl doesn't love A&N's shoe sale?
The area can be sketchy, but one can suck it up for the joys of cheap shopping. -

I REALLY like Army and Navy Department Store!!!
Whenever I need the basics (dishwashing detergent, simple picture frames, a hammer, etc.), I usually go to dollar stores or the Army and Navy. It has everything you need at a really great price. Plus, its huge...multiple floors and across the alley.
From fishing gear to food to clothes to basic home decor...it has it all.
Mind you, the area isn't the best, but I still go to Boneta's so I'm good. -

Headed over the A & N Boutique to pick up some outdoor extension cords for my new LED Xmas lights. Keep forgetting that they have one of the best hardware and camping gear selections in Vancouver. Went to London Drugs first and they had nothing.
A & N did not disappoint. Don't go there for decor (unless you are into grunge). It is in dire need for a bit of a makeover but for hardware goods and camping gear it is actually very good. Likely not going to buy my overpriced designer gear there but according to others, they apparently have some Winner(esque) finds there if you are not insistent on only wearing this years stuff.
Food section looked a bit scary. Not too much into food that has been around awhile. Will stick to fresh for that. -

Shoe heaven!
Forget the big shoe sale (it's insane) the shoes here are great all year round. I've been shocked looking up the retail value of my gorgeous heels after I bought them here... and they're always a killer deal. I bought a pair of Elie Tahari heels that are sold only at Saks 5th Avenue... for $400 bones!!!
Worth a check out. And if nothing strikes your fancy, then try, try again!Listed in: Pimp your closet!, Wardrobe on the Cheap!

Ill never get over it, they have everything!! Not exactly the nicest clothing or best groceries but everything else you could possibly need. the entire basement is a department store with fishing, camping and household things, the upstairs is housewares, kitchen/bathroom/bedroom kinda things. stuff you randomly need and dont know where to find. Super useful if you live in gastown because there isnt anywhere like it close by. The only thing they didnt have ever that I needed was a full length mirror and thats only because it was out of stock. Just dont go for fresh produce, they dont have that. Any shelved items of food they have real cheap. This place is massiveeee!

I really like A and N for lots of reasons.
You can find 100% wool rugs, porcelain dishes and other good quality items. The prices are usually realistic - they reflect the liquidation-type nature of the merchandise.
I bought $3 propane cans where they were $6 elsewhere, I got 3 pairs of rubber boots that actually fit my feet, on sale for about $20 each, lots of cute and practical kitchen and dining things, some cotton yoga pants reduced to $5 a pair, etc.
Overall, Jacquie Cohen knows what she's doing and I hope she won't let the standards slip too far. -

This large department store is good for surprisingly few of its departments, notably grocery sales and cheap clothes.
The "in season" clothes recall a lot of the poorly tailored, awkwardly patterned selections from Wal-Mart, with similar prices on all selections. Be warned, the knock off converse shoes here lasted my girlfriend and I approximately three weeks. In all fairness, as both bus riders and dance floor demons we used them much more than most people. Despite their poorly designed casual shoes, I can still recommend them for work boots, socks, pants, etc that seem both well made and priced. In the winter wool ankle socks are only a dollar!
Their groceries go higher or lower than supermarket prices, depending on the sales. I avoid buying most kitchen staples from here, which are inexplicably not arranged in the typical supermarket ring around the racks. Search for discounts on coffee and cereal, but dont bother looking for a true produce, bulk, or meat department.
The diner counter is cheap, about equivalent to an IKEA breakfast. Although I'm a fan of cheap grease, I couldn't recommend this place to anyone with more than a dollar to their name. Go next door to Save On Meats.
Another quick tip: the two halves of the store are connected underground by the sports department, so you can avoid the weird and smelly alley if you're scared by crackheads.
Overall an unimpressive shop unless you come looking for specific items. Keep in mind that they also have large sports and home furnishing departments full of stock I haven't browsed through. Army and Navy is definitely discount retail from the downtown eastside. -

I agree the location and inside clientele is a bit scary but where else can you get a Vancouver themed Stagg shaped themometer, fringed striped scarf and black opaque tights for under 18 CAD??
In the USA, we'd hit Big Lots; in Canada they have Army & Navy!!!
There are a lot of crap items but if you are willing to take the time to dig - you can find some treasures!! I found a great cowl-style black scarf in a knit jersey with fringed pieces for 7.99 CAD. I have since copied this item and made gifts for friends.. Thanks Army & Navy store for giving me a wearable pattern! -

This place has you covered from A to Z. I can't even remember why we walked in here but I left feeling more complete than when I entered.
The store carries just about everything you need, similar to Wal-Mart but with more dedicated departments. The camping department for instance could really outfit you for a decent trip whereas Wal-Mart can only really set you up to go car camping.
As it was getting late I only spent about a half hour here, wish I could have had a few. In the end I left with some candy (a little on the stale side), some dill pickle chips (yum) and a soda.
My only star deduction is for the mild funk smell, or maybe that's why I liked it so much.
They also accept U.S. currency. -

Every time I drop in here for the annual shoe sale I tell myself I need to come back more often, but somehow never manage to make the trip. I guess it's just far enough out of my radar when downtown that I forget about it. Poor ol' Army & Navy. I vow not to forget you again.
I showed extreme restraint during the shoe sale and whittled my pile from about 6 pairs down to 3, then down to 2, then at the line for the till put back another pair and just bought one. The bills in my head were adding up and I just couldn't justify it. But of course, as always happens, that cute $30 pair of black Madden Girl pumps would have been perfect for my night out to Bingo and would have probably saved me the blisters I got from the shoes I chose to wear (not the ones I bought). So with my one lone pair of shoes, I also picked up 3 tank tops/camis for $10! They had so many styles and I really didn't see anything different about them from stuff you would buy at Garage or Old Navy or places like that when you just need some basics tees and tanks. They actually had 3 t-shirts for $4! Seriously! Plain black tees plus a few other colours. I wasn't in need of any at the time, so didn't buy them. But the tanks I got are pretty nice. Next time I need to decorate t-shirts I am coming here to stock up.
If you haven't been, check it out. It's an experience. Good for cheap camping and fishing basics, too!
Bonus - during the Shoe Sale they have 2 hour free parking in the lot next door, with nice attendants to guide you to a spot!Listed in: Get Outside! But first you…

Barganistas, Fashionistas and Shopper Warning: This place is addictive. It dubs itself as Canada's original discount store, and it is. But the cool thing is, it's actually cool stuff that they sell, as in "I would wear it cool." Their shoe sale is the most coveted event of the year and it happens soon sometime in the Spring. From brand name jeans to shoes, luggage, bathing suits, accessories and home decor to groceries-- everything is cheaper. It's in a shady area, so lockup your car, but it'll be okay. The savings are worth it.

Kinda scary inside, but they had cheap winter-wear and I desperately needed a scarf and gloves. They have everything though - from clothing to food and more. Just kinda gave me the creeps though.
