So, my brother and sister-in-law ask me if I want to go out for dinner. "Sure," I say.
"Where do you want to go?" they ask.
"Let's go someplace we haven't been before," I reply.
"Well, there's this little Greek taverna in Lynn Valley," ventures my sister-in-law. "I haven't tried it yet."
Remind me to get something extra nice for my sister-in-law for Christmas. When we first went in, it seemed pretty average. The calamari came, and it was nice and light, rather than greasy and heavy, as it can so often be. And the tzatziki wasn't runny the way it usually is. It's nice and thick, and it stays where you scoop it.
Ah, but when my order of lamb and chicken souvlaki came, I was transported. Now, I like lamb, and I've had it a fair amount, but I think I'm safe in saying that this was The. Most. Exquisite. Lamb. I have ever tasted, anywhere, any time. Yes, that's saying a lot, but I stand by it. Awesome. I am so going back to this place, and taking the light of my life and the delight of my eyes, too.
Granted, it's a little pricier than most Greek places, but with food this good, who cares? -

Can I go lower than one STAR??!?
I hate to be critical - maybe they were having a bad day - but this was my worst Greek Food Experience Ever!!
Avgolemeno Soup - This chicken rice soup is usually one of my favourites!
This was awful - it tasted fermented!!
Greek Salad - vegetables seemed like they had been in the fridge a few too many days!
Chicken Souvlaki - Passable, but tasted smokey like it was cooked on a dirty broiler.
Greek Potatoes and Rice - Average at best.
Tzatziki - tasted more like sour cream than the traditional strained yogurt.
Service - poor! slow! server had attitude!
I wanted to start breaking plates even though there were no belly dancers in sight!
VERY DISAPPOINTING!! -

My wife and I live in the neighbourhood and used to frequent the place for the convenience as well as decent quality Greek food. We overlooked the sometimes ungracious, bordering on surly, service and took the mild abuse about taking too long to place our order in stride. We often felt like we were intruding and that the owners wanted to get us out of there as quickly as possible so they could go home. Entrees would arrive on top of appetizers if you made the mistake of ordering both at once, trusting that the server (almost always a older woman who I'm sure was the owner) would handle the timing with only your enjoyment of the meal in mind.
The final straw came one summer Sunday evening. My wife and I walked in around 7:00. It was a quiet night. There were a few active tables when we arrived but by the time we started into our entrees we were the only table in the house (this was around 7:45). Barely into our entrees and with a half litre of wine on the table the house lights came up and the music went off. The two owners (husband and wife team I gather) stood behind the bar with dour looks on their faces (this is 8:00 remember). We got the message, left a quarter litre of wine unfinished on the table and got out of there. We haven't been back since. That was probably two years ago now.
Try Mythos on Lonsdale, about a 5 minute drive away. They treat you like a welcomed guest rather than an obstacle to their enjoyment of Sunday night television. -

We live nearby and go to Aristos every couple of months. The food is good (not great), the service is usually pretty good, albeit a bit slow sometimes, and the atmosphere is pleasant. I wouldn't recommend anyone go out of their way to come here, but if you're in Lynn Valley and looking for a decent meal it's worth the visit.
