This place came with a few must try recommendations and I think I set my expectations too high.
I ordered an item of the special board and my friend ordered one of the recommended regular items.
The food was average at best and the phrase"slop on rice" keeps coming to mind.
I really really wish this was my diamond in the rough but it fell greatly short of the mark.
Because of the potential I will try eating here again and update my review accordingly. -

A "truck stop" diner with a chef that can whip up food well above the caliber of diner type establishments. Make no mistake, this is not your ordinary "diner". It may be a in a diner atmosphere, and located in an industrial part of false creek, but the food that they serve up is much better than any other diner that I've EVER been to. Presentation may be lacking a bit (hope I didn't creep anyone out with my peering at their food) but, for this price WTF cares?
They have daily specials, and you can check them out on their website. I haven't been able to try out one of the specials but I have had burgers & breakfast, and I was quite happy for the quality and the price. -

What can I Say; if you love delicious greasy spoon cafe, without the grease, this is the place for you.
Plate lickin goodness. Chef is a master with meat; always melt in your mouth goodness and I don't remember a meal being over $12.
Always great and I have been a million times. Only open until 4 pm weekdays. -

What a pleasant surprise this one --I needed a generic coffee joint for a meeting and I did a search for coffee places near where I needed to be, and the Argo cafe popped up.
When I got there, I was a bit nervous. It looks a little rundown and campy, and I thought I'd made a huge mistake.
But the service was fast and friendly and the food was delicious! I had the denver omelette which was cooked perfectly. Hot, big chunks of ham and peppers. Just a great experience all around. I'll be back! -

I would have never known about this little cafe if it wasn't for my friends taking me there for lunch today!
Friendly staff and family run.I ordered NY steak with potatoes, vegetables with red wine sauce and it was less than $13.00! -

Hot diggity, this place is awesome! Came at 1:30pm the other day to miss the lunch rush but there was still a 15 min wait. Be prepared for long waits as their popularity has sky rocketed since appearing on "You Gotta Eat Here". It's a tiny place, dive-ish, with seating for about 20 ppl max. I got the duck confit with mashed potatos, veggies and blueberry sauce- so good! Duck was tender, juicy; blueberry sauce was amazing. My friend got the beef bourguignon with pan fries and that was stellar too- sauce was very flavorful and beef was uber tender. Our meals came with a yummy beef lentil soup... all for $12.50!! You'll be paying upwards of $18-$20 for food of this quality anywhere else. Service was friendly and quick. Lots of happy diners. All the food coming out the kitchen looked great. We literally licked our plates and longed for more. Can't wait to go back and try every special. Cash only.

Lovely lil diner, good food, coffee, and prices, and especially good vibes! This place is a hidden gem if you like diners.

I popped in here for a soup & sandwich while my car was getting serviced
This place runs like a well oiled machine, for years the tiny diner serving mostly local business is a huge success with homemade everything. They offer Asian dishs and great selection of daily specials. The mostly lunch crowd over takes this place... the room is cozy & small, with a retro bar diner sitting on one side and booths on the other and almost always full.Listed in: The Main St Event

I'm going to have to take a star off my rating for:
1) only so-so breakfasts
2) salty-to-the-point-of inedible take-out lobster bisque. So seriously salty and overspiced that I could not get through a bowl.
Sorry Argo, I didn't want to do this, but I can't overlook these two infractions.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Well, I read about this on another dining site and dragged my co-worker to lunch one day. He was looking at me with disdain when we arrived outside but I was able to tell him more about it as we waited in line for a table!
There are special gourmet lunches here all for around $10 each and they include soup. But most importantly, they are delicious! That day we had burgers & fries which are also yummy. He was a believer after those burgers...
Today we took 2 others with us. We had about a 10 minute wait for at table, close to noon. The line just got longer & longer after we were seated. Choice of soup was potato & leek or Manhattan seafood chowder. We all had the chowder and were very happy. 3 of us had the lamb shank ($10) & the other had a Bombay chicken breast which was stuffed with mushrooms & carmelized onions served with a coconut-curry sauce. (Also $10) All the dishes came with mashed potatoes & crisp, fresh veggies which included broccoli, cauliflower & zucchini, carrot & baby bok choy - 1 piece of each.
Well, the lamb shank was unbelievable! Fall off the bone tender. Delicious gravy. The mashed potatoes were perfectly creamy & fluffy! The plating is gourmet too! My friend's chicken was also just as good looking & the sauce looked beautiful. He showed a piece of his chicken after he cut it, how perfectly juicy it was!
After the subpar lamb shank I had at Darios last week for about $30 more per plate, I sure felt like we hit the jackpot today!!! This is the best hole in the wall I've ever been to. Where can you get a gourmet meal like that for $10? Nowhere but here!
We usually walk but drove today & there was no parking close by. Had to park about 4 blocks away. It's in an industrial area. -

Lunch specials like you wouldn't believe!
Every day there are 10 or so specials, with home made soup for about $10. Check them out at http://www.argocafe.ca/
Some are huge (if you're hungry try the seafood pasta or the lamb shank), all are delicious. Not your typical greasy spoon fare--more like what you'd expect at a high-end restaurant, but served casually in a diner atmosphere.
If you're going to spend nearly $10 on a sub sandwich somewhere else, you're wasting your money. For the same price you get healthy, high-quality food and great service. -

Kirby and the crew here are awesome! I used to work 4 blocks away and went here for lunch 4 days a week. Every day there's a lunch special that's better then the previous day and you can't get sick of the variety because there's so much of it. The frenchasian blending of menu items is unreal! Love this place!
Only knock when you're not working within walking distance is that parking is a pain in the royal bEhind... but its worth the search for a spot.
I just wish I worked closer! -

From the outside, it's hard to know what to expect here. I wouldn't have known of it, but my friend lives in this neighborhood and goes all the time.
It was wonderful- we each had burgers that tasted fresh and well seasoned. It came with a whopping side of fries and soup. It was a lot of food.
The staff were quick and friendly- always nearby and looking our way to see if we needed anything, -

Well, strange to say, but I'd never heard of this spot before and I'm a huge fan of the greasy spoon. This place is great for what it is. Prices are ridiculously low, the food is tasty, and the service is prompt and friendly enough given how busy they are at lunch.
First, I had the lamb and barley soup. The lamb really added to the flavour and I think it's a great step up on the traditional beef. I also had the Clubhouse sandwich with a side of fries and gravy. The sandwich was good, with an actual decent cut of turkey used and not cheap deli package meat. The fries were also not bad. The gravy: Awesome. If they had given me a spoon, I probably would have gone through a few bowls (although I probably wouldn't feel too good afterwards). I also tried the Tiramisu. Perfect way to cap off the meal. Nothing fancy: not too sweet and just enough flavour.
I came out stuffed and the damage was only around $10. I'll be back to try the steak and eggs for $10. Sounds like a deal to me. -

Since being featured on Food Network it seems everyone wants to check this place out. Including us. We arrived at 1345 on a wednesday. It was clear we just missed the lunch rush. This is a true dumpy diner....what you see is what you get. But the appearance is where dumpy ends. The staff are very friendly and seem to know 50% of the diners by first name. There is no end to food selections; the daily specials ( and there are a lot) are listed on white boards; the regular menu listed on the blackboards. From simple sandwiches to menu items usually only found at 5 star restaurants, this place has incredible choices for everyone. Every meal came with a choice of home made soup. I had to have the menu item which was featured on the tv show; chicken chili con queso. Normally served on rice, I had to try it with fries as they did on the show. Only I had my fries on the side....a key measure of a good diner is excellent home cut fries...yes they have that! All in all a wonderful lunch...I only found myself wishing I could be there for dinner...for the five star stuff! But they don't do dinner....oh well. Worth the visit for sure

I used to order take out from Argo, when I worked a few blocks away. Some of the best (egg fu yung) I have had. Back then, it was less conspicuous, and we had a great interaction with the owners. I am glad they are still around, and apparently doing quite well!

A smashing spot, the Argo offers some of the best value meals in all of Vancouver. Both the decor and the surroundings are kind down at the heels, but the service is friendly and the grub is great.
Highly recommended. -
