Hooray for the arts in St. Albert! The Arden Theatre is by far the greatest entertainment venue in the city.

It's an intimate yet still somewhat formal theatre that seats just over 500 people. I've been several times for a variety of reasons. I saw Jann Arden play at the Arden (how cool is that???) when she was just starting out. In fact, her dad was selling her concert T-shirts in the lobby. I saw the Nylons perform there. I've performed on that stage many times for music festivals through school and Christmas concerts. I've assisted adjudicators while other nervous students took the stage. I recall taking many field trips there as a child to watch live performances.

Their box office is also a Ticketmaster location. Back in the days before the random number system, I recall freezing my butt off in the wee hours of the morning to get the best seats for some big name artists playing other venues.

When I think about it, y'know, the very first show or concert I ever went to must have been at the Arden Theatre. This place is nestled inside the much larger St. Albert City Hall/library building, but it's got a certain charm that's all its own.

You can catch an amazing variety of shows here. Because it's not a huge venue, only a few hundred people, you can catch tons of upcoming acts, especially local (Edmonton-area and Albertan) acts, from country to indie rock.

I may have even been in a few high school musicals that debuted here. Just sayin'.

If you're looking for a unique date night out, this is a lovely little spot with a huge variety of performances in a gorgeous, historic building. Great for family shows, too!
